TV TIME!!

So as I was google imaging the word “lunch” for some inspiration (do to a friendly reminder by Spam Kitty/LC) I was reminded of lunches back when I was a kid while not at school. Dipso can attest to this one.

My mom has been a soap opera fanatic for probably 40 years or more so guess what was usually on? Young and the Restless. As a kid I got into this shit. I’m sure dipso and I clucked about Ashley and Victor or whether Catherine and Jill would ever get along (I always hated Jill…bitch!) like a couple of 8-year-old hens. These days, I don't have a fave and probably won't until i retire but i loved staring intently back in the day and savoring each bite so it would last the entire show.

So my question to you is, what is or was your favorite thing to watch will diving into your grilled cheese? Do any of you sneak off to the break room during lunch to watch Dr. Phil make you good?

Oh, and WFL??
(sorry for the brevity…kinda forgot today was my day)
SEE YOU ALL TONIGHT OR TOMORROW!!!! KISSES!!

Cafeteria Side Story

“More testicles mean more iron…”

From elementary school to college, chances are you’ve spent a good amount of time inside of a cafeteria. Normally, cafeterias are known for bad food served up in volume, Volume, VOLUME!!!! But of course there are exceptions (I hear the World Bank cafeteria is stellar), and sometimes even a bad cafeteria will throw a curve ball of something yummy. (I’m talking to you grilled cheese and tomato soup!)

The term cafeteria is Spanish, and it roughly means “coffee shop.” The cafeteria as we know it in the United States derived from food service traditions brought to California by Mexicans.

And while you probably don't associate cafeteria with "coffe shop", I’m betting you all have strong emotions, memories, and opinions regarding cafeterias and the fare they serve.

As for moi, I worked in a cafeteria in college, washing dishes. By the end of my shift I would be hot, sweaty, and covered in my fellow students half-eaten Wisconsin Cheesy Chicken and Beef Stroganoff (what do you call a cow masturbating?). I was electrocuted twice on the job, routinely abused by my crew chief, and regularly burned my hands on plates coming out of the Hobart Dishmaster 3000. Yet it was the best job I ever had...

Even today, I regularly eat in the cafeteria in my building, and I gotta say the food ain’t half bad (it’s ALL bad, bada-boom!).

In any event, share your best/worst cafeteria stories. In 6th grade I participated in a food fight, and the event remains one of my greatest memories.

Other points to ponder:
What was your favorite caf food back in the day?
Where can one find a good caf in your local town?
And of course, WFL? The caf perhaps?

Late post, What you 2nd lunchin' on?

Many Apologies team. I came in to work today to begin the final half week of my working contract, not exactally looking forward to it, in fact hoping that I would just be done already, but I found my account expired and my name removed from the roster. I had to work with the IS department to get reinstated and thusly have been scrambling to get things done this morning. And Blogger was been disrespecting me lately too. those are my excuses, Receive them as you will.

Ok so As I was waiting for the IS guy to give me access again, I went out to get a late breakfast, and it got me thinking, why not break up your meal breaks during the work day.

What is it about the lunch break that we love? Is it the way it breaks up the day? If that is the case, why not break up the day more often?

I think it would be interesting if instead of one one hour break during the day that we experiment with two 30 minute breaks. Take a late breakfast around 10:00 and a late lunch around 3:30, and I think the day would be nicely portioned into managable bits.

What do you think? Keep lunch as it is, or use it strategically to break up the day?

Whatever you do, let us know what you'll be having for at least one of your lunches.

TACO TOWN!!

Greetings fellow Lunchinators! Hope you’re having a nice Thursday.

While we’re all smart, independent, autonomous lunchers; there are a myriad of lunch choices out there, and they all want your lunching dollar. While we here are a forum to share ideas and perspectives on and for lunch, we all face a blitz of stimuli in the form of advertising, hoping to influence our decisions.

Food advertising itself has become entertainment in many ways, though it can also be a source of immense and inscrutable annoyance.

Some of the ads may actual get through to us, and despite our own better judgement, soon we’re lining up for the slop they’re peddling. Others may only sicken and frighten us.

Many people have opposite reactions to the same ads.

I love those Quizno’s Furbie thingymabobs, but some crazy folks hate em!

Some things may only puzzle us. The Arby's Oven Mitt? I guess its more appetizing than their food, but try a little harder Mr. Ad Man!

Share your thoughts and opinions on the ads that make you laugh, keep you up at night, work for you, keep you away, or leave you drooling for more. Also, what ads and products are you wishing were true?

I for one am waiting with fingers crossed for someone to gin up that SNL Taco Town! delicious creation. Just picture it: A crunchy all beef taco smothered in nacho cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special Southwestern sauce; wrapped in a soft flour tortilla with a layer of re-fried beans in between; wrapped in a savory corn tortilla with a middle layer of Monterrey jack cheese; wrapped in a deep fried gordita shell smeared with a layer of special 'guacomolito' sauce; wrapped in a corn husk filled with pico de gallo; wrapped in an authentic Parisian crepe filled with egg, gruyere, sausage and portobello mushrooms; wrapped in a Chicago-style, deep-dish, meat lover's pizza; rolled up in a blueberry pancake; dipped in batter and deep fried until it's golden brown; and served in a commemorative tote bag filled with spicy vegetarian chili.

And of course, WFL?

Free/Discounted Stuff!

And it's my turn again - sorry for the late post. My turn came around quick!

Every Wednesday in August, California Tortilla is having a special day in honor of their birthday. 8/2 was free cupcakes. 8/9 was a scratch-off ticket with any burrito purchase. 8/16 was a 2 for 1 coupon with any entree purchase. 8/23 (today) is double stamps on your frequent shopper card, and 8/30 is free chips & queso with an entree+soda. I get so excited about free stuff. Why? It's burritos. It's not like it's sushi. It's a big tube loaded with fat & calories (so much for my workout last night . . .). And although, I do love the CA Tortilla, I get more excited just because it's something for nothing. I suffered through horrible service day after day at Cosi's, just so I could get my free damn salad. So I have my 2 for 1 coupon from last week and I'm wondering if I use it today, do I get FOUR stamps?? Eh, probably not, but a girl can dream. And in spite of my dental appt this morning (sore jaw - should probably stick with Boston Market side platter of creamed spinach, yams, and mashed taters), I will be buying a burrito or burrito bowl so I can get 2 stamps, b/c I am a sucker for so-called "deals". What are you a sucker for? 2 for 1? Free soda with purchase? Coupon for 1/2 off next time you come in? Is there a place that you'll throw caution to the wind for if you get something for free? Any place you would not in a million years step into, unless there's something for free going on?

And it's Liverwurst on Wonderbread day! Ew.

So WFL people? Is it liverwurst? On Wonderbread? B/c . . . ew.

LA CHOI LUNCH SURVEY #1

Yes, folks, it’s the first ever OWFL lunch survey!!! I know we’ve done online polling type surveys in the past but this one is different. This is more qualitative in nature and is supposed to elicit your deepest, darkest, most intimate thoughts on all things lunch.

Let me begin by saying that I cannot take credit for this idea. I have some college friends that administer a similar type of survey so that we can periodically keep in touch. And since the OWFL-ers are spread out across this great United States, I figured that I would experiment by replicating a great idea. Besides, don’t you think it is about time we asked some provocative questions that really tells us something about each other? I do.

OK, now please remember to answer the questions honestly and in the context of lunch. Let the fun begin!

1. What is the one food that you hated as a child but now you love?

2. Describe the worst lunch date you’ve ever had. (If you’ve never had a lunch date, then make up what you THINK would be the worst lunch date ever.)

3. You discover a magical tree that only you have access to, and it can grow an unlimited amount of only ONE item of your choosing. What would it be and why?

4. If you were to open up your own restaurant, what would it be called and what would be its signature dish(es)?

5. Who do you think will make the biggest “ass-of-self” at the OWFL Chicago Conference this year?

6. Finish this joke: Knock, knock. Who’s there?

7. If you could write a song or choose a motto that embodies OWFL, what would it be?

8. Got a question that you've been dying to ask someone in this group? Go ahead and ask it now. Maybe you'll get an answer.

9. Snacking preference: savory or sweet?

10. In an all out eating contest, which OWFL-er do you think would win?

11. WFL today?

The Lunch Poets Society

If you aren't getting excited for the Chicago conference you're either dead, medicated, or a eunuch.

Or perhaps you are like our friend earthquake who revealed to me on Friday night that he didn't even know that the Chicago conference was coming up.
If you are in the same clueless boat as him you need to consult the Chicago conference post (located HERE) and get your ass in gear!! Because the party starts in TEN DAYS!!!

Since blogger seems set on not allowing me to upload any pictures I am forgoing my 1st and 2nd ideas for posts and going with a picture free yet more creative aternative.

HBO's DEADWOOD, is one of my favorite shows (HBO's THE WIRE being my favorite). For the unfamiliar the show details the semi-fictional history of Deadwood, SD, a mining town famous for being the last resting place of Wild Bill Hickock and as a nexus for just about every thing, person or theme associated with the Old West. The show is known for it's foul language but also for the lyrical way in which it is written. A character might say the most offensive God awful thing and yet it comes out in a sing song almost shakespearean style. Almost poetic.

So it is in the spirit of Deadwood today that I bring you the first edition of OWFL LUNCH POETRY!!!

We're gonna start this new OWFL tradition off with HAIKU.

The rules are simple, tell us what you're having for lunch in the Japanese poetry format known as haiku.

"But what the heck is HI-KOO?" asks rico,

Haiku is...

"a mode of Japanese poetry, the late 19th century revision by Masaoka Shiki of the older hokku, the opening verse of a linked verse form, haikai no renga. A traditional hokku consists of a pattern of approximately 5, 7, and 5 morae, phonetic units which only partially correspond to the syllables of languages such as English. It also contains a special season word (the kigo) descriptive of the season in which the renga is set. Hokku often combine two (or rarely, three) different elements into a unified sensory impression, with a major grammatical break (kire) usually at the end of either the first five or second seven morae. These elements of the older hokku are considered by many to be essential to haiku as well, although not always included by modern writers of Japanese "free-form haiku" and of non-Japanese haiku. Senryu is a similar poetry form that emphasizes humor and human foibles instead of seasons."

"That's exactly what I thought." he says.

Let's boil it down to these basic rules.

There are three lines.
  1. The first and third lines of a haiku are each a total of five syllables.
  2. The second line is seven syllables

That's it! Incredibly simple.
Here's an example:

The Czar was hungry
His work shirt matted with sweat
He bought a halfsmoke.

Understand?

Okay, I don't realisticly expect even a 1/6 of you to write haiku (I'm still waiting for everyone's personalized entries into the OWFL Deli menu).

But why don't you at least try and tell us WFL in some sort of creative poetic or rhymey way.

And while you're at it tell us about your weekend (did miu have the appropriate number of birthday shots? did someone finally learn to play euchre? can jada tell us what melissa etheridge eats for lunch?)

WFL you wannabe poets???

Hang Over lunch\brunch

Jada posted about hangovers (well just asked about who was recovering) on Feb11. I looked around because my last two postings were rehashed debacles.

Today I found a topic that has been covered in many posts but never as an opener.

What to eat to cure or help a hangover.

I am sitting here at work. Still sorta weirdly tipsy and queazy. You know, the feeling we all love. I am CRAVING breakfast tacos.

I need grease and fat to get my liver functioning again.

Oh man, who has some aspirin? I need a pillow, blanket, and someone warm to cuddle up with. But most importantly I need something, anything to eat that will cure this crap as I sit here at work. So, what should I eat? And clearly more important Whats For Lunch?

BIRTHDAY WEEKEND!!!

Ok, I know I am obnoxious in regards to my birthday, but I really can't help it...its MY FUCKIN BIRTHDAY!!!! Soooo, there are a few topics i would like to cover regarding birthday eats:

1) Favorite Celebratory Food: What do y'all eat when its party time?? Do you go for it and eat the richest, most decedant foods you can lay your hands on? Or do you treat it like just another day?? Personally, I like to do it up. I am having dinner with my mom and her boyfriend (this is weird for me, but theres food and Bonzai (equal parts rose wine and saki) so Im sure I will survive) at The Plum Garden which is a tasty Japanese Hibatchi Grill. Mmmmmmmm....

2) Do you celebrate with lunch or dinner?? I go both ways (hehe) here. But since I am planning of busting out my drinking hat at dinner, Im thinking lighter lunch....maybe a little chicken salad sammy or a pb&j. Also, I have an interview (keep those fingers crossed people!) and I don't want to feel bloated and squirmy while talkin myself up to my next employer. Suggestions??

3) Cake. We all know Uni rocks the art of the cake (hard), but if you are sans-Uni on your own personal holiday, whats your favorite?? I am goin for a little bit of everything. The OtherMom (not to be confused with the EvilStepMom) already sent over a plate of her world famous chocolate cupcakes of which I have already had 3. I fully plan on ordering the tempura fried cheesecake at the Plum Garden, and Saturday I will be partying in NYC, so I will have my pick of yummy yummy baked goods....I don't even know where to start!!!

Alright, well I have lots to do before my train on Friday, so I am going to quit talking about myself now...but have a fantastic fuckin weekend everyone, and don't forget WFL?????

Help My Friend PLEASE

A friend of mine is a finalist in a contest to win this beautiful Chloe Edith bag. I know, some of you might not understand the call of the perfect purse, but then I will appeal to your competitive spirit. My friend can not lose to someone calling herself "PeepShow" - it's a blatant ripoff of our very own PeeP's moniker, and that just ain't right. So please, please, please take a minute to register and vote HERE . My friend is JDLNeil.

I am forever in all y'all's debt and will purchase drinks accordingly in Chicago.

Thanks so Much!!!

The Conference Call

Sorry guys, i'm a little late and this might be a little short.

Over the past few weeks, PeeP's company has been going through the guts of a corporate merger. (sounds hot, doesn't it?). This has entailed a lot of conference calls with folks in NY, Dallas, LA, Memphis, Louisville, Boston and Chicago. Some of these folks i've met and like. Some i could care less about. But there is one person that has recently reemerged into my "business life" (just puked in my mouth) and i really can't stand her. She's one of those people who complain to get what she wants instead of being proactive and pleasant. Right now, she is the bane of my existence.

What's lunch have to do with this? Well, let me tell you. Today i have a meeting with said person right about lunch time. I have zero appetite because of this. I haven't had a drop of food today and i know i have to eat something. She is making lunch a chore.

We all have some sort of task that creeps up in our jobs that makes eating no fun. It makes eating a chore rather than an escape. So my question to you is, what do you eat on these hopefully rare occasions? How do YOU survive? Please help.

Oh, and when you're done taking your 3rd glance at my crotch this morning, tell us, WFL???

Me Again

"I order a club sandwich all the time. And I'm not even a member. I don't know how I get away with it. 'I like my sandwiches with three pieces of bread.' 'So do I.' 'Well lets form a club then.' 'Okay, but we're gonna need more stipulations.' 'Yes we do.' 'Instead of cutting it once, let's cut it again.' 'Yeah, four triangles.' 'And we will position them in a circle. And in the middle we will dump chips.' 'Or potato salad.' 'Ok.' 'Let me ask you a question, how do you feel about frilly toothpicks?' 'I'm for 'em!' 'Well, this club is formed. Spread the word on menus nationwide.' 'I like my sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts.' 'Well you're not in the fucking club!'"

-Mitch Hedberg

Waiter
: Excuse me sir, you are with the club
Fletch: No, I'm here with the Underhills.
Waiter
: The Underhills? They are left Seńor.
Fletch
: Oh they'll be back. He went out for his urinalysis.
Waiter
: Would you like to order something, sir. I will put it on the Underhills' bill.
Fletch
: Oh, yes. Very well. I'll have a Bloody Mary, a steak sandwich and a... steak sandwich.

For a nominal fee, I provide a service where I will eat and describe pork to Kosher people.

-David Cross

I have no idea, people. Here's some stuff sort of loosely based on lunch. Kind of a metaphor for this blog, no?

I'd also like to direct folks again to the Conference Post as that glorious event draws nearer.

So, have at it. The topic is Lunch. Annnnnnnddddddd............. Begin.

Holiday! Celebration!

The OWFL posting schedule is a beautiful thing, and not just for the obvious reason that it keeps things tidy and organized and guarantees the multitude of unique voices amongst the OWFL get expressed. Today I realized another facet of beauty in the schedule and that is the addition of all the special "days" listed by our lovely Madame Presidente. I had no idea what I was going to write about today until I double checked the schedule to make certain it was my day to post and saw that today is National Creamsicle Day! Who knew?!

I love the frozen treats, although I must admit to not being a huge fan of the creamsicle. I think it is the cloying sweetness of the artificial orange flavoring that I most strongly object to. But it got me thinking of a history I have with frozen confections, particularly at lunch. As a student at Hannah Middle School many a year ago I used to love to buy a Jello pudding pop in the cafeteria to supplement the brown bag lunch that I brought with me every day. Once I moved on to East Lansing High School [I love my hometown] I was thrilled to discover that the cafeteria sold Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake bars, and I promptly switched my alliance. I didn't eat in the cafeteria often, favoring instead Taco Bell or Bell's Greek Pizza, but when I did I always had a Strawberry Shortcake.

So what is your favorite frozen goodie on a stick? I suggest you incorporate one into your lunch today in honor of this important holiday. I am going to walk down to the White Hen after lunch to procure something for myself. As soon as I get rid of this hangover and actually eat lunch, that is.

WFL?

Subbing for Uni, since she did the fantastic Lunchmas post…

As the DCers know, I’m poor right now. There is NO ONE – NO ONE, I repeat – who can financially fuck themselves over due to neglect and conscious financial mismanagement like I can. Which, is precisely where I currently stand. Now, not being new to this game, I’ve gotten quite good at feeding myself on little to no money. This week has been a lucky anomaly, with the Lunchmas spirit overtaking the Czar and spotting me for the delicious Lunchmas feast on Wednesday. Work ordered pizza that same day, and I’ve fed off of the (free!) leftovers for the last two days. Yesterday, Wookie also generously donated some of her delicious pasta and homemade sauce to the cause. Earlier in the week, I cooked a huge batch of organic brown rice that I found in the cabinet and was eating that with whatever I could find: my dad’s peppers, canned tomatoes, some feta from the fridge, yoghurt and my personal favorite, beans. You see, my number one, go to poverty food is beans. Black beans, kidney beans, cannelini beans, red beans, edamame – you name it. The thing is, I love beans. LOVE. But, my digestive system does not share my passion.

Now, we’ve talked about poverty food before. My plan is to hit the grocery for more rice, and quite possibly some ramen, to get me through for the next week. Several good things have come out of this though: 1) I have lost weight (despite the carb fest, I’m just not eating enough – plus, have I mentioned how filling beans are?) 2) I’m drinking water 3) I’m detoxing (sort of – I do have a lot of booze at home, and actually had vodka for dinner one night this week) 4) I’m forced to be creative and not just run out to ABP at lunch 5) I’m getting more sleep. See? Poverty isn’t all bad.

Today I didn’t bring anything for lunch because I’m taking a hiatus from beany goodness and, my second go to food in times of poverty is eggs, and I forgot to hard boil some this morning (I see A LOT of eggs in my future) – I’m thinking I might splurge on Potbelly, as it’s filling and cheap or possibly a hotdog or half smoke from a cart outside. (Jo, which cart do you go to? The one on the corner near here creeps me out b/c the guy inside cat calls at me everytime I walk past. Ugh.)

So, let’s make today’s topic any of the following: Cheap eats, creativity with food due to poverty or weight loss needs, or things that you love to eat, but that don’t love you back.

So, What’s For Lunch, kids?

I feel like leftovers

Having the post after Lunchmas is a difficult task. I feel like last night's cheeseburger macaroni. Left and leftover.

Today is my first day back in the office after being on the road since mid June. I have been thinking about lunch ever since I started the walk to the office from the bus stop in the rain. It has been so long since I've been in the area that I don't know what is still here or what I want.

I used to frequent the McDonalds on Route 7 because it was cheap and fast and, I must admit... Tasty. But then after receiving advice from OWLFers I branched out. I tried the NY Deli, the Bagel sweatshop, the Olive Garden, the food court at the mall, Chipotle and many other places. After that change I no longer had a regular lunch spot and had many that I could call my own, but the question is, Where should I go on my first day back? Who gets my lunch dollar today? I just don't know.

Now imagine yourself in my shoes, well the sandals that I wore and took off as soon as I got here. If you were gone for a month and a half, what place around you would be the spot you have longed for since departing? Where would you come home to? What would you have for lunch on your first day home? What's for lunch today?

Happy Lunchmas!...and on the 6th Day God Created LUNCH!

So my fellow lunch mates, the day has come…it has been one year since the birth of our beloved Original What’s for Lunch blog! That is 12 months of sharing our lunching experiences, 52 weeks of wishing for that perfect sandwich to get you through the day, 365 days of mid-afternoon munching, 8,760 hours of “To Bring, or to Buy” banter, 525,600 minutes of…well you get the point.

As our community grows and we become the official spokes-blog for Quiznos Salads, let us not forget the individuals who created our little world. They have been here since the beginning and continue to be pillars amongst the lunching masses. They are our leaders, our mentors…our one and only Josephus, Dipso, HaterTot and James Vernor. I sat down with them for a brief interview about the background and backbone of our society….over lunch of course…well not really but we would have! Anyways, through our “discussion” it was divulged that the WFL idea first transpired all the way back in 1999 in Chicago between Jo and Dipso in their adjoining cubicles. Even back then folks, Jo was an avid e-mailer of “WFL?” (surprise surprise – I think Youtube came later). The initial idea was a WFL website though, as Dipso stated “a legion of lunchers employed to provide live lunch recommendations to the public”…but deep in his heart I think he was just scopin’ for the ladies! Jo then moved on to bigger and better things (aka Washington, DC), but managed to keep his dream alive. About 6 years later James Vernor (another victim in a long line of harassing and banter-full e-mails from Jo whom he had met through Hater in college) gave in to the WFL idea and suggested a “blog”…a what? A “blog”. Then one fateful night Jo was introduced to HaterTot at a local DC bar, Mackey’s (an Irish bar NOT known for their Mexican food), through his then girlfriend who is often referred to as TheBestFriend by HT. It was that night that the love/hate relationship seed was planted. HaterTot recalls persistent IM’ing from Jo...”WFL?” ..”WFL?”…”WFL?” and in typical Hater style she avidly replied “Nothing”. Alas Jo turned HT’s tide and showed her the light about lunch and all its splendor (although little did he know he was molding “El Presidente”). The four joined forces and with a little creativity, a little spunk and a lot of eating the Original What’s for Lunch was born.

So the mission of the blog was pretty clear from the beginning, to offer an outlet to hang out and discuss lunch. To share lunching ideas, successes and failures (and so Jo could have one solid form of communication that didn’t include 85 e-mails or IM convos). It is felt by our founders that the mission has remained constant and successful. It has been recognized that there were times where the “power hungry” and “bigger ideas” have caused a few bumps in the road. The double posting, a schedule, creativity, lack of focus, where the first conference locale should’ve been and “Eff the Czar” seem to be the most prominent “issues” that have been dealt with. There still seems to be slightly mixed reviews on all of these hot topics and have created slight alliances along the way. But overall in good faith, our fearless leaders have worked through them and eventually found a common ground. I think HaterTot speaks for the masses with “Healthy debate is good, and should be encouraged”. As stated before lunchers…there ain’t many people on this blog who will hold their tongue or their opinions! Although I love Dipso’s approach to dispute…”dunno, don’t care and I was right”. Through it all though, lunch has remained a particular focus and continues to grow as everyone gains their own appreciation.

During these growing pains people have come and gone and come back again. We have fond memories of Hater/Bride, Jack, Rawker, Clemmie, Rico, Spoilsport, Goldfish, Notwitty, Abs, Awreck, Sinecure and even one of the founders James Vernor. Every once in awhile we will get a refreshing cameo but their presence is missed by all those who swapped little bags of Doritos for the other’s Little Debbie snack cake. It is in hope and good faith that all of these individuals will continue to visit and think fondly of the OWFL when the clock strikes 12. There are a variety of reasons why participation fluctuates and even ceases to exist…work being one of them. Work…the one thing that creates the lunch break also prohibits some from fully existing in the lunch discussion world. Many of the founders opted to not discuss how the blogging/working co-exist in their own lives. As we all have experienced at some point in time, it seems that the two mix as well as oil and water. If Abs were around she would also pass on her two cents about mixing business with blogging…politics…they’re a bitch!

As we have lost some of our beloved, the blog continues on and seems to be growing everyday. Even with belief and perseverance on their side, some of the founders weren’t exactly sure where the blog would go, and that perhaps it would even be a passing fad like the latest American Idol. But as the first few days and weeks passed by the OWFL marched on. It soon became reality that this could actually work and that people actually cared and wanted to share what was on their two slices of wonder bread. So what is the draw? What has encouraged us the most? Some say it is the creativity and new voices and even Mr. Vernor credits HT (then known as EthicsRock) as being the greatest addition due to her distinct contributions. Jo feels that the friendships established here have played a key role as well. He recognizes that people like LT, SpamKitty, Diz, Miu and Jada were people he barely knew last year and now considers them his good friends. HT also attributes a lot of our traffic or “lurkers” to Jada’s personal blog where the OWFL is listed…it’s amazing what the term “Suck it Down” can do for popularity even when referencing food! And then there is the simple fact noted by Dipso and JV, lunch is just too important and will never be forgotten!

So here we are a year later celebrating the first official Lunchmas. Jo and HT continue to be the leaders at large, sometimes in perfect harmony and other times in perfect discord but always with the best intentions of trying to improve and sustain or society. James Vernor has realized that blogging is bad for his career and has taken a step back, while Dipso chose to drop the contributor status to relinquish some responsibility but it also allowed him a bit more freedom in posting which seems to suit him well. They each share their own memories and have grown in their own way. Jo continues to think of new ideas for the blog and is enjoying his more active social life. He looks back fondly at the first mini conference in Chicago and the first official conference in DC with the best birthday cake EVER, and is excited to see what other events are in store (specifically the upcoming Chicago conference to be held Labor Day weekend). HaterTot has taken to actually eating lunch and enjoying it while she participates very carefully and with discretion at times. She also recalls the mini conference fondly when she met Dipso and Jada for the first time, and enjoys the good days on the blog when it’s active and alive. Even with JV’s decision to take a step back from participation he continues to seek bigger and better lunches at new places suggested by his new friends. Dipso recalls his first successful recruitment effort which brought Peep on board. Peep (who initially thought the blog was “dumb” *gasp*) has been a welcome addition to the group and has offered his artistic eye and soon became the brunt of everyone’s hipster jokes…BUT we offer our cheers to Peep and think of him fondly whenever we down a cold can of PBR.

Peep is just one of many who have come on board by “gentle” coaxing/harassment. Several of us are friends of so-and-so, and some have just found their way. Jo is uncertain of how to proceed with future recruitment efforts, his harassment tactics though seem to be successful thus far with the additions such as Rico, Watchdog, E-que, Shorty, and MikeySunshine. HT, approving of the additions, would like to see a more selective process perhaps like one suggested by JV where future WFLers should have to submit an essay on what they love about lunch. Nothing has been decided on or elaborated in any form, so keep on spreading the word folks…we are the bible belt of lunchland! The more you talk, the more intrigue we produce to individuals such as MissChibi, Molly and Earthquake….and who knows maybe even the elusive Herbie will make another appearance for HT’s sake!

Where do we go from here you ask? What adventures await us? Well there are other ideas on the backburner with domain names on reserve. Something to do with those other two meals of the day, and of course one focused on drinking…mainly because most of us are headed down a path of being overweight alcoholics and some of us with a case of emphysema. Jo hopes to see us one day as an independent sovereign nation proceeding to world domination and then finally taking over the Food Network where Unicorn will feature her “Baking with Porn” show featuring ass/tittie cakes. HT hopes that Quizno’s will finally give us our props with free eats (QUIZNO’S SALADS-QUIZNO’S SALADS-QUIZNO’S SALADS)…while Dipso anticipates us reaching near the top on google searches for “What’s For Lunch” and hopes to see the recipe sharing get a little more underway than it has been in the past. Who knows where the next five or ten years will take us, will our beloved blog become a thing of the past perhaps taken over by mini microchips implanted into our taste buds that will automatically trigger a message to the brain of what your body wants to eat that particular day?! If so, we better all be around to talk about it!

Well, some of us are relatively new to this experience and are the Woody’s in this neighborhood cyber-bar, we have our Sam and Diane’s who will constantly bicker and the Norm’s who remain to be the entertaining permanent fixtures in our afternoon routine. As my discussion with our leaders came to an end there was a glowing aura of appreciation, satisfaction and sense of accomplishment around them. HT became sentimental recognizing the new friendships and the strengthening of old ones as she “busted” out with “I LOVE YOU GUYS!” and Dipso says it all simply with “Lunch is Beautiful”. We have created a community and friendships with at least one common interest…LUNCH! Will our 9-5 lives ever be the same? I hope not. Long live the horsecock!

And don't forget people....WFL???!!

HAPPY LUNCHMAS!!!!! (Post 1)

It's hard to believe it, but we've made it a whole year.

Later today OWFL Historian Unicorn will be unveiling a "very special lunch post" that details the history of the blog's founding from the mouths of those who conceived it. Can't wait to see the final product of that.

But that will only tell the creation story of the blog. The reason OWFL has sustained is because all of us made a decision to commit some part of ourselves to making this blog a better place.

We want you to share your OWFL story. What brought you here? Why have you stuck around? What have been some of your favorite moments in the year long history of OWFL?

Feel free to get as sappy as you want.

Later you will hear the story of the blog founders, but first it's you're turn.

And then tell us how you will be lunching on this very special lunch day.

WFL?

Memory Like A . . . Uh, What Was I Talking About?

Inspired by my recent realization (30 seconds ago) that it was I, LizTurtle, responsible for today's posting (after some muttering on my part, that why the F isn't the G.D. posting up yet), and desperate for a topic that hasn't been discussed (b/c lord knows I've done that before), what is the saddest lunch you forgot at home? Was it in the fridge so you could at least have it for dinner or lunch the next day? Or was it a masterpiece of smell & taste, a delicate balance of spices & herbs, but left on the counter in 95 degree heat so there was no way to salvage it 8 hours later when you got home & realized it was already rancid (Uh, spam kitty may be exempt from this conversation)? Lucky for me, I'm pretty lazy, so the worst I've ever lost was a turkey sandwich, which wasn't that special, except I was really looking forward to it. I think there was a Jello pudding in there, too, which was also sad, because it was the last one.

Oh, and happy Put a Squash on Your Neighbor's Porch Night or whatever the hell it is today. And What's For Lunch?

Ummmm....

WFL?

Feel free to replace this if the regularly scheduled poster shows up. I just couldn't leave the blog empty.
