Liquid Lunch

Sorry late post. I plum forgot, sorry kids. I had to have a kick in the pants from The Czar via Madame Presidente.

I mentioned this the other day on Josephus' wonderfully pleasant blog, but I am always impressed by Jo's bold beverage choices at lunch. I generally don't think much about my beverages at lunch and opt for a big glass of Chicago tap water or maybe a diet coke if I'm feeling frisky. But suddenly I want the Orangina or designer lemonade. I think today I might pick my beverage first and then order around it.

What will you be drinking today at lunch? And of course, the always pertinent, WFL?

Greetings from B612

Not much going on today, so I'm offering up an homage to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who would have been 106 today had he not died flying his plane somewhere over Marseille in 1944, and his most famous legacy, Le Petit Prince.

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye ."

So with only 3 volcanoes (2 active, 1 dormant), a rose and those pesky baobab trees, what do you suppose The Little Prince did for lunch up there on his asteroid?

"Children should always show great forbearance toward grown-up people."

What were you forced to eat as a kid, that you couldn't stand? What did you hate as a kid, but love now? (or vice versa) What was your favorite lunchtime treat? What kinds of misguided shit did your parents inflict on you, all in the spirit of them being the grown ups and you being the kid? (let's keep that last one to lunch - this isn't grouphug.us)

And, what oh what, in honor of Count Antoine Marie Roger de Saint-Exupéry and Le Petit Prince, will you be having for lunch today?

EDIT: SHIT! Happy Birthday to a former frequent contributer to OWFL, Rico Horsecock!!!!

Interview Eats

HAHAHAhahahahehheheheheheeee! You laugh pathetically .. plastic almost ... sweaty in your neck tie that isn't stylish nor is your hair nice and your shirt no longer shows any trace of the iron you were sweating over earlier.

You are in an interview. Sure, they like you and actually believe your plastic smile! But now they are saying, "What's for lunch?".

Dilema, you LIKE the italian food with the red sauce! ooooooo!!! So what do you do people? WHAT ... DO .... YOU .... DO? Do you go with etticut? Do you eat the fish? Or are you bold and brave (not the crappy soap-opera kind but the swash-buckling football player type ... uuuhhh that may read comic books and act like a geek occaisionally .... and have a fixation with lunch food) go-getter they think you are (accountants excepted of course)?

I've got a job interview today people (and Jo). So wish me luck... but regardless if I get the job or not ... the only thing I'm really concerned with is .... "WHATS FOR LUNCH?"

the blog: blandness of bread and water

Sorry to break into the schedule here...but I think something should be done about the current "situation". As we all the know Jo, has started his blog not of solidarity but solitary confinement. I'm not sure if the lack of participation on the OWFL has something to do with what's going on or if people are just busy at work. BUT I do feel some sort of hestitation and lack of unity in what once was an outlet for discussions on a topic that we all love (lunch) and friendly banter between our cyber-egos. Is this how we want things to continue? Is this going to help our beloved OWFL society grow and thrive in a world where "lunch" is typically seen as a minute break in the day to grab a bland bologna and cheese on white bread (with NO mayo) ??!! UGH!
It's time to rejoin forces folks...TABULA RASA!!!! Let bygones be bygones!
I know that we all miss eachother, so let's just get over it and move on. We are not merely a democracy but a lunchocracy!! It's time to reach down deep within our hearts to recognize what once was our purpose, our mission....our solidarity!!
Jo - just a message to you by some chance you are lurking...there once was a man...our dear Martin Luther King, Jr. We all know of his 'I have a dream' speech. Jo - you once had a dream...a dream of a utopian lunch society. Are you so willing to let go of your dream so easily?? To let it slip by and have the McDonalds and Applebee's of the world take over and determine that a $4 extra value meal of reheated grimaces is the acme of the everyday working wo/man's lunch hour???!! Pshaw! Shame on you!
We are better than that...we are bigger than that...We are The Original What's For Lunch!!!!
Carpe Lunchem! Carpe Lunchem!

Wish you were there. Bonnaroo 2006

Wow. MikeySunshine, Josephus, Peep and Dipso went to Manchester TN for Bonnaroo and had a great time. There was so much going on and while you can't imagine what theat place is like, I will try to give you a brief insight in to what you missed by not joining us.

What is Bonnaroo? Well it is the music festival of our age. There are about 80,000 festival goers and probably double that number of other folks; security people, support staff, dirty hippies with no ticket and vendors. So imagine a city of almost a quarter million people, gathered for 4 days of music and fun in the Tennessee sun. The living section really is just a field that is loosley organized into roads and trails and camping pods. The festival took place in a more controlled area called Centeroo. Centeroo has all the time passing activities and music venues.

The things you could do at Centeroo include: watching one of the several dozen bands that played on the two main stages, three secondary tents, three longue tents, or two small stages. If you aren't in to live music, you could go to the arcade / discoteque and listen to a world class DJ spin his hits while you plunk quarters in to old timey games like Burger time, or you could play one of the several x-box 360s they had available, Or you could go to the silent disco. The silent disco also had a world class DJ spinning, but in order to hear it, you had to use the wireless headphones that they provided. If music ain't your thing, You could go to the Dolby Cinima and see various movies (including Rocky IV), sporting events ( USA world cup action, Miami Heat B-Ball finals) or documentaries (Spinal Tap). There was also a comedy tent with joke telling professionals. On Saturday and Sunday there were circus performers doing their acts over near the Ferris wheel.

The music was fantastic. I'm sure everybody who was there will give you a different report on the music, but most will aggree that it was great. In my mind the top acts were; G Love, Beck, Atmosphere, Tom Petty, Mike Doughty, and Phil Lesh.

The menu at Bonnaroo (Including Lunch) was mostly from Costco. We had pop tarts, granola bars and fruit coctail for breakfast. Lunch was Ham and turkey sandwiches, and dinner was generally chicken.

Bonnaroo was a good time and a great opportunity to meet some other OWFLers. I wish you could have been there. Oh well, maybe you'll be there in 2007 when we go with an RV and VIP tickents.

Since we're back to one post per day Please let us all know What's for Lunch today?

SCHEDULE

(to be moved to Always Pertinent Posts after 6/20/06)

The new Schedule is up and ready!!!

Please let me know if you'd like to change your date(s), or feel free to swap amongst yourselves. (that sounds dirty)

If you already signed up for a "side order," I kept you on that date, and your "side order" will now be the one and only post of the day.

Let the fun commence!

The Dawn of a New Era

Good Morning Lunchers!

I know many of you received texts or even calls from the former czar over the weekend. Some of those had to do with the absence of deep fried olives at this year's festival, others to do with the show itself, still others to do with... well, other things.

And then there were the ones to do with insurgents and choosing sides etc. I politely informed Jo that a change in administration had taken place in his absence, and he was actually quite cordial about the whole thing, and is happy to see the Schedule come back. However, I have heard that he did not maintain his cordial demeanor, and has sent texts about punishments and other horrible things to some of you. Hell, he sent one to me.

Now, I am here to tell you that all is right with the blog back in the capable hands of Madame Presidente. Later today I will work on the schedule - please feel free to email me any requested dates - otherwise I will begin to assign people to dates, but of course we're able to be flexible.

Now, Madame Presidente would like to know - and don't be afraid to raise your voices - what would you like from OWFL that you're not getting? How can this administration better serve you? What are YOUR needs? And, as always, What's For Lunch?

Today's Topic: BACON

I'm craving bacon today...I don't know what it is but I want it. I've pretty much converted to turkey bacon over the years, but today the craving is for the real stuff. Brown and crispy with just the right amount of fat.

What's your favorite way to have bacon? On the side with an egg fried hard? Atop a triple decker club? Layered over a medium rare cheeseburger on a toasted kaiser? Wrapped around jumbo shrimp and scallops and grilled to a crisp? Or on the highly underrated and often overlooked classic BLT (preferably on a buttery croissant for me)?

Ahhh...I remember the days when I could make a meatloaf, wrap it up with bacon slices so as it baked the delicious fat would seep throughout the meat...and not give a second thought to my arteries or waist line...*sigh* alas...

TIP OF THE DAY: When frying bacon try using chop sticks. They offer great control when doing the all important flip.

LET'S COMBINE THESE BITCHES

Eff Bonnaroo and Eff the Czar

That's right. I said it.

Screw those dirty hippies rolling around in the mud, shitting behind a tree and wallowing in their own filth. I took two showers this morning, just because I could.

No rules today kids! Talk about WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU'D LIKE! Damn the Man! Fight the Power! It's anarchy up in this motherfucker, what are you bitches having for lunch?!

WFL?

So its gonna be dead today. Our czar and many others are road trippin. I'm dreaming of roasted corn and watermelon balls soaked in watermelon rum, brisket, and turkey legs.

So its summer time folks, What is for lunch?

Side Order: Ides of June

Welcome to the ides of June!

So this is actually what they refer to as a lazy hazy day of summer. Where you couldn't really summon the self-riteous ferver to stab anyone to death or to even get your butt out of bed.

Do you realize that absolutely nothing is happening today? I should know I google(d)(TM) it. Many of us are on their way to a festival of lazy hazy fun and food. Leaving us behind in our drudgery. I for one am too lazy right now to even get jealous, but all of our(my) good thoughts are with them ... especially thoughts of roasted corn on a stick, hillbilly pot-stickers, and watermelon rum soaked cubes of watermelon ... mmmmmmm.

So on our day of lazy days ... What is for lunch folks?

Interviewin' Time

We have an interviewee in for interviewing. And we desperately need this guy, as we're short on peeps at the moment. Where do you take an interviewee for lunch? Somewhere fancy & get his hopes up that this company actually spends money on its employees? Somewhere utilitarian, so he knows what he's getting into, but may irritate him that he's not being 'wined & dined'? Or some other option? And WFL?

Blue Monday

Does any one else feel blue on Mondays? A lingering and nagging regret that you didn't accomplish more over the weekend? A dread that a whole five days looms before you have another weekend to squander with frivolity? What do you have for lunch on blue Mondays in order to cheer up? What should I have for lunch today? The question is plaguing me, help me OWFLers! WFL?

Apocalypse Now - WFL? 6/6/06

I just hope if anything does happen today...that it happens AFTER lunch!

Side Order: Burger Time!!

I love burgers. I cannot get enough of them. I could eat a burger a day for the rest of my life and die happy (and young).

This weekend my beloved cookin' cousin (who happens to be vegan) decided to play Iron burger chef for me and created three delicious interpretations of the American burger all for me. All were made with a batch of 93% lean ground beef that she seasoned in secret. The first burger was topped with sauteed portabello mushrooms and vidalia onions and provolone cheese. The second was cooked with a mixture three cheeses (muenster, cheddar ad monterrey jack) inside the burger, and the third was topped with a bleu cheese sauce that my cousin made. All were delicious and a sign of true familial love.

I got home from my burger weekend and checked my email only to find a friend had emailed this link to me. The Burger Gods were sending me a message.

So for today's Side Dish we pay homage to the burger. Reflect on a delicious burger you've had. What was special about it? Was it from a fast food joint, was it homemade, was it from a Burger Specialty Store, just tell us about it. And for WFL today, please...have a burger.

What's For Lunch, Y'All?!

"What it do?"

Good morning from Houston! (seriously, how do you live here Diz? The weather is disgusting, and what's with the streets being wholly empty on a Sunday night, and practically ZERO open restaurants - people say DC shuts up at night - but we ain't got shizzle on Houston)

I'm off to metaphorically fellate Big Oil, but my infamous Nervous Stomach has jumped up and bitten me in the ass. So, I'm thinking that something bland will be on the menu to celebrate what I hope will be "The Money Shot."

How 'bout the rest of y'all? WFL?

Friday, June 02, 2006

WFL? June 2, 2006

It's Friday, people! What are you having for lunch today in preparation for the weekend and possible happy hours tonight? Laying down a good base or getting started celebrating early? It's beautiful in Chicago and I hope it is where you are too.

Now WFL?
