Hooky Eatin'

Isn't it sad that you can't say for sure you haven't worked in this specific cubicle?

So I'm taking today off of work. The nice thing about playing hooky from work is that you can just straight up say "I'm taking Wednesday off. No, no reason. Just gonna walk around, do some touristy stuff while there's none of those pesky tourists around, maybe do some Christmas shopping, have a beer with lunch (oh yeah)." There's none of the fear of being caught. Which, maybe, makes it not worthwhile for some of you (you know who you are). Yes, we all love the exhileration of getting away with something. I can't be bothered to deal with that much stress, and it's much easier to say "I'm taking the day off" instead of trying to fake a cough/losing my voice in the morning. Which I would have to continue trying to fake the next day, b/c this cough/voice-loss that's going around sounds like a bitch to get a rid of. Anyways, the point is: what's a good hooky lunch? Since I'll be in the District, I'm going to take the opportunity to patronize at least one eatery I rarely have the chance to hit up. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll make it 2! While you're reading this (uh, for some of you), I'll be eating waffles at the soon-to-be-defunct Waffle Shop with our very own HaterTot (anyone want to meet us there at 10:00, you're more than welcome!). What's for lunch then? Probably a late lunch, as we're eating a) breakfast and b) eating it pretty late. So maybe around 2 we'll hit Ben's Chili Bowl or Ollie's Trolley. Or maybe the famous Breadline. I know nothing first-hand of these eateries. Yes, it's sad. So what's your favorite hooky lunch? Do you prefer the dive-type place or the sit-down special occasion place? Or maybe just that half-smoke cart you've never gotten to around the corner? And should I have 1 or 2 beers? And, of course, WFL today, you poor working stiffs?

When I play hooky, I like to find a way to pull a weekday brunch. I like to have some sort of poached egg on some sort of bread with some sort of exceptional bloody mary to accompany. There is no place springing to mind just now. There's nothing quite as much fun as getting drunk on a day when you're just flat-out not going to work.

Not sure what I'm having for lunch today. Probably lame-ass suburban office-park fare.

When I play hooky I order lunch in. Usually a sub and some wings. Or I'll drive to Five Guys or So's yYour Mom and return with multiple burgers/sandwiches all fixed in different ways.

Yummy!

Now I'm getting hungry.

Last night RoEsq and I dropped into Whole Foods for a couple hot sammys, some sushi, and a salad.

Don't get their Chai Tea .. it tastes like my old running shoes smell.

Regardless, I had the "Californian Connection" it had one of the best Pesto spreads I have ever had (roasted pine nuts just falling out of the sandwich), she also added a bit of Hvarti and some sun dried tomato spread (not too much) and a huge amount of Turkey! They then put it in the pizza oven (rolling kind .. not brick).

Not too shabby.

As for playing hooky, I hate ya. Its beautiful outside. I'm going running around Buffalo Bayou at lunch and then looking for gifts for the season.

I know what I want.

Breadline is my personal hooky lunch fave. It's the one thing I miss most about not being downtown for work. And of course, when I was downtown everyday, I was in law school so I could only afford to eat there on special occasions. So Breadline is definitely a treat. If you go there and it's on the menu, get the Persian Chicken Salad. Then, please tell me all about it later!

Today is holiday party day at work. Festive holiday sweaters and ties are everywhere! I hope I don't get stuck at the "grown-up's table" again this year. The Gen. Counsel, Deputy Gen. Counsel, etc. are lovely people, but their presence kinda puts a damper on partaking in the cash bar.

Feasting at Maggiano's to commence in T-minus 75 minutes.

My favorite hooky place is Empire Cafe.

Speaking of holiday parties, I am facing my office holiday party tomorrow afternoon at Union Station. (Specific location unknown, as they thrive on Holiday Party secrecy around here.)

I asked a close colleague (and member of the Holiday Party committee) to give me a reason to go. Her response?

"Open bar."

But, is it really worth leaving the office, dropping off my car at home, metroing to this quasi-secret downtown party location to hang out with people I get paid to hang out with all year-round? I could just engage in a good old-fashioned hooky drinkathon all on my own.

I mean, sure, it's free drinks, but at what cost?

Still pondering lunch. People are pissing me off today. I think I might wait another hour or so in order to avoid eating angry.

(Besides, I have fond memories of last night's sushi dinner with lizturtle to sustain me...if you know what I mean.)

12:44 and only 7 (plus this one) comments?

For shame.

Lunch today is a turkey club with a side of chili.

I keep reading "hookah eatin".

Me too Peep, so I'm kicking it lonely and depressed today... I forgot my damn running shoes too.

Song list (I feel like a choad posting this):

1. Rogue Wave - Eyes
2. Regina Spector - Fidelity
3. Norah Jones - Come away with me
4. Ben Fold's - Kate, Bitches Ain't shit
5. Bird York - In the Deep

Anyone else always feel like a moron for a person posting their list?

peep: I'm definitely leaning that way. I might drop in for a free drink and then use it as a springboard for a good ol'-fashioned afternoon bender.

"Hell, I'm downtown and drinking..."

Had a piece of stupid going-away cake for lunch. I think I might just hold out until I get home and serve up a double scoop of Eagle Rare 10 Years Single Barrel (which was an impulse buy this weekend and with which I am quite pleased).

holy moley folks...what a long day of meetings and goings-on here at the office.

i had leftovers from yesterdays holiday potluck. it was a mish-mash of salad with chicken, some pot roast, and some bulgar wheat salad stuff. pretty tasty, mostly b/c it was free.

when i play hooky, i like to make my own large breakfasts, which usually contains some form of egg and cheesy arepas and dark espresso grade cafe con leche. i told you that i'm part latina.

HT convinced me about how lame the cookie party was that i was going to attend on sunday. thank god she's a voice of reason.

That's my sister!
I'm checking out Lupe.

Lachoi it isn't often that HT is the voice of reason...

Did you know that John Lennon was Peter Boyle's best man?

I can't play hookey, cuz I don't have a job.

But I do work.

I had to work through lunch today and am heading out right now in hopes of potbelly.

I don't even remember the last time I played hooky...so sad. Typically if I do take off of work it's because I have a ton of errands to run, or I am traveling. Which usually = fast food of some sort.

Today was the building mgmt. lunch or something like that...it was eh. Turkey, pasta, salad and sweet taters.

I'm stuffed. My boss had a little too much scotch, so "Santa" was extra-funny this year. I sat at the "kids table", which I believe was a good move on my part.

Can't believe I have to do work now.

Just back from a lovely day of hooky with LT. Well, hooky for her - I live a life of leisure.

Waffles (sadly, it was too early for me to eat without wanting to spew, so I skipped it - but I'll be back at a reasonable afternoon breakfast hour before it closes; I love that place!), then Portrait Gallery, then Rosa Mexicana, then Blood Diamond. All of the sudden it was 5:43, dark, and I was still full! (we did some other shopping stuff in between there, but it has to do with "the Holidays" so I'm going to pretend it never happened)

Oh, HQ - been on the Lupe train for awhile now. His flow is nice, but his lyrics, well...

I am still so full from my lunch at Rosa Mexicana with HT. I ate a small country's worth of guac & drank a small country's worth of sangria. So bloated . . . will probably be hungry around 9. And all I have is pate & brie! Woe is me!
