happy world egg day!!!!!!!

aptly titled: last of the moh-egg-cans (this guy is such a rock star)

the incredible, edible egg. is there not a more perfect food than this tasty white orb with a yellow yolky center of yum? i think not! as i sit here consuming 2 hard boileds, i am wondering how many of our dear owfl-ers are egg lovers?*
let's all take a nice little survey (oh boy!) that is be dedicated to the wonderous egg:

1) how do you like them prepared? (scrabbled, sunny-side, over-sleazy)
2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs? (your hometown diner, ihop, your mom's house, etc.)
3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?
4) impress us with your own cooking talents. tell us how you use eggs in the kitchen and the best dish that you feel features them prominently.
5) finish this phrase: eggs are to chickens as...
6) how many eggs does it take to fit into the trunk of a car? think about it.
7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown?
8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week?
9) what came first: the chicken or the egg?
10) WFL??? (and it better have eggs in it)

*if you do not like eggs, then you are a loser. if you are allergic to eggs, then i pity you b/c your genetics have forced you into not liking eggs. nevertheless, you should just answer the survey anyway pretending that you like eggs OR substituting the word "eggs" with some kind of food item you do like...though you are a loser, i don't necessarily want you to feel left out.

Hmmmmm... eggggs. I had some eggs for, get this OWFL'ers, BREAKFAST today. You non-breakfast-eaters are missing out I tell you.

Anyhoot

1) how do you like them prepared?
I like em' over sleazy, with some wheat toast to mop up that yolk. That and omelletes.

2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs?
At the grocery store, aisle 1

3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?
The "perfect throw" when I nailed a moving car from about 30 yards.

4) impress us with your own cooking talents.
I like making the "bird in the hole" where you take a piece of bread, cut out a hole using a glass. Then drop the egg into the hole, put a slice of cheese on top, and you've got a nice little treat, plus the holes you cut out make cooling looking mini-toast thingy's.

5) finish this phrase: eggs are to chickens as semen is to nut-sacks.

6) how many eggs does it take to fit into the back of a car trunk? think about it.
Approximately 5,040 jumbo eggs.

7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown?
Eggs are naturally brown?! waaahhhH!?

8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week?
48 eggs?

9) what came first: the chicken or the egg?
The chicken IN an egg.

10) WFL??? (and it better have eggs in it)
Don't know yet, but I already had eggs today

1. Over easy (over light) is my preferred way of preparation. A close second would be in a scramble of some sort. Meaning scrambled with other ingredients.

2. I love cooking my own eggs. Second place would be from my Nana. 3rd would be form this place in New Orleans (magnolia?) but I think Katrina forced it to close.

3. My mom used to make me eggs in a cup for breakfast when I was in elementary school. I felt like the specialistest kid in the world.

4. I do slow cook scrambles with eggs and multiple ingredients. One I was particularly proud of involved a slow scarmble with chicken sausage, spinach (pre-e-coli), onion, mushrooms and three cheeses. I cooked it on the stove top and then baked it a bit (braising pan). It was ridiculously good.

5. I was going to write something about tampons but I have decided to skip this question instead. It's a sign of maturity.

7. The inherent racism of American culture.

8. 48

9. The egg. And those chickens chose not to have them fertilized.

10. Maybe an egg salad sandwich, but at the very least I'll buy a hardboiled.

BTW, rico tubbs is allergic to eggs...

Yay eggs!!! I love the eggs. Oh, boy. Now, onto the survey before I have to get on the road...

1) how do you like them prepared? (scrabbled, sunny-side, over-sleazy)

My absolute favorites are soft boiled with some torn up toast and butter in a bowl with salt and pepper. After that, probably over-medium/hard. Oddly, with fried eggs, I prefer them not to be too runny. Of course I love benedict of all varieties (best with crab) and omelettes, and hard boiled...

2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs? (your hometown diner, ihop, your mom's house, etc.)

Blue Moon in Baltimore has the best benedict. But, for soft boileds, they're best at home. My mom actually made the best ones, and I've never mastered her technique - but I try, oh, I try.

3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?

Hard to say. I think when my roommate in Budapest (who at the time, couldn't cook to save her life) made breakfast and made hard boileds chopped up with onions and fried potatoes. It was surprisingly delicious. Also, Easter, dying eggs and eating eggs - oh, and PICKLED eggs - yum!

4) impress us with your own cooking talents. tell us how you use eggs in the kitchen and the best dish that you feel features them prominently.

Uh, I use eggs in pretty much anything. I make an amazing fritatta when I have time for such things.

5) finish this phrase: eggs are to chickens as...

Chicken, Spinach and Roasted Red pepper omelette with a smidge of parm and ricotta! Oh, wait, what?

Uh, as Jesus is to God?

6) how many eggs does it take to fit into the back of a car trunk? think about it.

I don't know, but I can tell you that the truck we bought our eggs off the back of when I was kid had a lot of eggs in it.

7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown?

Well, some eggs are legitimately naturally white, and apparently shell color is determined by the hen's breed. Hens with red feathers and red ear lobes have brown eggs; hens with white feathers and white ear lobes have white eggs. However, I think b/c we have more white hens here, our pref. is for white eggs, so I think that's why. My European friends were horrified by all the white eggs.

8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week?

hehehe Obviously I won't give away the answer...

9) what came first: the chicken or the egg?

Chickens. Whether you believe in creationism (retard) or science, the egg coming first just doesn't make sense.

10) WFL??? (and it better have eggs in it)

Road food. Not sure what yet. I think I'm still full from the delicious Chipotle LC treated me to last night!

1) how do you like them prepared? (scrabbled, sunny-side, over-sleazy)

scrambled with a touch of garlic powder, salt and fresh cracked pepper. i also like them over sleazy with buttered wheat toast so i can soak up all that yellow yolk.

2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs? (your hometown diner, ihop, your mom's house, etc.)

i like getting huevos rancheros at don jaime's down the street. it's not that their eggs are prepared so spectacularly as much as i just like that it's cheap, and they throw an excellent red sauce on top. i also like it that they serve them on chinese food plates.

3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?

i'd say easter egg hunts, but we didn't do so many as kids. (something about that being too much of a white people/american thing for my parents to partake in)

i do remember a home ec project in junior high where we had to carry around an egg as if it were our baby and make sure it didn't break. each egg was marked with some "special" nail polish according to the teacher so we couldn't just replace them if they broke. my best friend at the time totally broke hers by tossing it up and down in her backyard. (she was just trying to play with her baby!) yeah, she found that revlon red shade number 8 at the drug store and quickly replaced that bitch. of all projects in school, that taught us the LEAST about child rearing.

4) impress us with your own cooking talents. tell us how you use eggs in the kitchen and the best dish that you feel features them prominently.

i make a mean omelette. i also make the fluffiest scrambleds ever courtesy of lessons from alton brown. (i heart him)

5) finish this phrase: eggs are to chickens as...

fetuses are to women

6) how many eggs does it take to fit into the trunk of a car? think about it.

7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown?

i just thought this was an interesting question due to the whole eggs being predominantly brown in other countries except for our own. i don't really know why. but i agree with jo...it's those racists bastards trying to put down the brown.

8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week?

i don't remember too well, but i remember it was more than a dozen. i think she consumed a whole lot of cabbage and onions that week too...poor mr dirty mitts had to put up with some ridiculous gas that week, i'm sure.

9) what came first: the chicken or the egg?

clearly the egg. duh.

10) WFL??? (and it better have eggs in it)

the best egg salad sandwich ever from breadline downstairs: theirs has sundried tomatoes in it and served on fresh baked olive bread...whurd!

I have a mild egg allergy/sensitivity, so when I eat eggs in Hatertotian proportions, I break out in patches of eczema (which I thought was spelled eggsema as a child). But I can and do enjoy eggs in moderation, so on with the survey!
1. When eaten solo, scrambled, but in a sandwhich over-medium.
2. My kitchen. Egg sandwhich with provolone cheese. Yum! Or breakfast tacos from this little Mexican joint a couple blocks from the TV station I interned at in San Antonio. I always volunteered to go pick up breakfast after the 5:30 a.m. (which was the early shift's equivalent of lunch), so I could be sure we went there.
3. When I was a kid, my mom would make "dippy eggs" (poached w/ toast on the side) for us when we were sick. It was always the first "real food" eaten during the recovery phase.
4. I like to treat scrambled eggs as a blank slate and just throw all kinds of stuff in there.
5. Excessive blogging is to being fired.
6. 12 gross.
7. The US's Puritan heritage has led to an obsession with sin and purity. Thus, there is a preference for the white, factory farm raised egg, both because white represents purity, and because the chickens in factory farms, having been isolated from the roosters, are shining examples of abstinence. The "free-range" hippie chickens out there producing impure brown eggs and *gasp* even occasionally cavorting with roosters are part of a vast conspiracy by the liberal media to force their values onto America's breakfast tables. Or what HT said. That sounds reasonable.
8. 22
9. Eggs. But they were fish eggs that eventuall mutated into dinosaurs and then chickens through the process of evolution.
10. Not sure yet. I was thinking a salad, so I'll probably throw some chopped hard boiled egg onto that in celebration of today.

1) how do you like them prepared? (scrabbled, sunny-side, over-sleazy)
easy over (i have recently come to learn that the correct term is over easy although i can't imagine why my father would have lied to me).. in public restaurants i find they rarely make them as i like them so i'll usually stick to an omelet of some sort...

2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs? (your hometown diner, ihop, your mom's house, etc.)
some diner in southern Manhattan.. can't remember the name if i am limited by not cooking them myself..

3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?
hatching chickens as a kid... those fuckers smell though..

4) impress us with your own cooking talents. tell us how you use eggs in the kitchen and the best dish that you feel features them prominently.
for over easy, first cook a pound of bacon... don’t pour out any of the fat and then cook your eggs in that with garlic salt and chili powder.. mmmm.. and when you make omelets or scrambled at home make sure the eggs are room temperature and use a touch (1 tbsp) of room temperature filtered water.. your eggs will never be so fluffy...

5) finish this phrase: eggs are to chickens as...
veal is to cattle...

6) how many eggs does it take to fit into the trunk of a car? think about it.
2.5 cubic inches per egg
144 cubic inches per cubic foot
67% packing efficiency (% volume actually taken up by egg volume when packed together)
96.48 cubic inches of egg per cubic foot of space
35 cubic feet in my trunk
3376.8 cubic inches of egg that will fit in my trunk
1350.72 eggs will fit in my trunk
1350 eggs (you can't have a partial egg unless you allow crushing)
2016 eggs if you allow crushing (then we have a 100% packing efficiency)
(many estimates used)

7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown?
i thought brown eggs and white eggs were two different things... if they are bleached i think it's to give us the illusion of food purity..

8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week?
72... you're fucking nuts ht..

9) what came first: the chicken or the egg?

Mamon made me eggs at 2:00 a.m. this morning!!!

1) I think, when it comes down to it, I probably like a poached egg on buttered toast with s&p.
2) My brother has chickens. When I stay there, my neices get up in the morning and go collect eggs for uncle dipso. It’s quite adorable. They always scramble them. There is definitely something about a truly fresh egg. They always have WAY too many eggs, so I get sent home with a couple dozen. Sometimes they’re a little fetusy, though.
3) Peep, were you there that time we egged Pipestone Road with Donger? That was pretty fun, I guess.
4) I love the egg salad but I rarely do it the same way twice. The last one I made was with mayo, onion, s&p, a little lime juice, tarragon and a drop of sesame oil.
5) Eggs are to chickens as far as I know.
6) If it’s a 2001 blue 4-door Toyota Echo, the answer is 2040.
7) They pick up the dye better.
8) 27
9) Chicken
10) I’ll hit the 65 Chinese for H&S soup and an egg roll.

1) how do you like them prepared?
I love eggs cooked many different ways.

I have only one egg-ception the only fried eggs I like is scrambled. I still have to cook them egg-zactly how I like it (hard with seasalt or cheese with onions and lox).

That is the only way to eat fried eggs.

I like poached ... mainly because it has a cool name. "Other's like to poach my ideas here at work." You see that is cool because it is telling everyone that my manager and the infrastructure architect are total hacks without seeming that confrontational.

:)

2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs?

I like to get eggs any way I can ... but I want them pasturized. Yard-brids are just dirty animals. Go to a farm one day and tell me they are not.

3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?

My mom holds the Spring-Solstice-Fertility-Festival every Easter at her house (since I was 15 ... that that ended about 6 years ago). There, all of our friends would come over to the house (my brother's, my sister's, and mine). She would make us do crazy things like Hat building with art-supplies and then have a fashion contest (all the while feeding us Sangria and Win coolers .. yes we ranged in age from 24 down to 14). Then we would go easter egg hunting (for plastic ones) which contained prizes like lottery scratch tickets. Well, when I was 16 one of my sister's friends got alittle drunk and started following me around that day. One thing lead to another and it was my second sexual experience with an older woman (at that point). That was fun.

4) impress us with your own cooking talents. I like making "Eggs Carmen" which is a piece of poached salmon (with butter and dill) topped with caramelized onions, a poached egg, and holandaise.

5) finish this phrase: eggs are to chickens as... 16 year old virile boys are to horny, drunk older women. .. you know .. the old in-out.

6) how many eggs does it take to fit into the back of a car trunk? think about it.
I only like to make sure sperm goes into the "trunk" ... or my bicycle.

7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown? We're a white bread nation ... same goes for our eggs .. that is slowly changing. I like the Mocha-latte ... they are just prettier people.

8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week? I question whether or not I want to actually know the answer. That is just creepy.

9) what came first: the chicken or the egg? That is an egg-sistential question and I haven't finished my STARBUCK'S COFFEE!

10) WFL??? (and it better have eggs in it) I don't like to have my eggs in one basket counting my chickens while my hands are in someone's bush. So, its in the air ... maybe a cardiac burger (the only way I'll eat a sunny-side egg ... on a greasy hamburger.)

1) how do you like them prepared? (scrabbled, sunny-side, over-sleazy)
Well, eggs benedict, but since I'm never that motivated, over easy, but with the yolk really runny & the white really hard. It's a delicate balance.

2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs? (your hometown diner, ihop, your mom's house, etc.)
My grandma used to cook them in the bacon grease. Mmmm. That was good. If not there (uh, since she's dead now), most any brunch place that has eggs benedict. Or eggs chesapeake (crab cake instead of ham)

3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?
Easter egg dyes & hunts, of course!! And the aforementioned bacon grease-cooked eggs courtesy of my grandma.

4) impress us with your own cooking talents. tell us how you use eggs in the kitchen and the best dish that you feel features them prominently.
Hm. I don't get too fancy with eggs. I guess the best things at the time are egg sammiches in the middle in the night after heavy drinking.

5) finish this phrase: eggs are to chickens as...
veal is to beef

6) how many eggs does it take to fit into the trunk of a car? think about it.
Whatcha gonna do with all dat junk? All dat junk inside dat trunk?

7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown?
Are they really bleached?? Ew. I usually buy "organic" brown eggs (except for Easter). And I say "organic", b/c who really knows what they mean by that. FDA doesn't have any guidelines, so they're probably just as non-organic as the others. /end rant. Uh, so I don't know why. Damn puritans!

8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week?
Given the clues given, I will say . . . 30.

9) what came first: the chicken or the egg?
Silly question! Eggs are a breakfast food, chicken's for dinner! So clearly the egg in the morning!

10) WFL??? (and it better have eggs in it)

Not a lot of time to read at the moment, so forgive any lack of threading here:

1) how do you like them prepared? (scrabbled, sunny-side, over-sleazy)
Big fan of the over-medium, but definite favorite is the poached. There aren't too many preparations that I DISlike, though.

2) what's your favorite place to get your eggs? (your hometown diner, ihop, your mom's house, etc.)
I love eating at Waffle House. Whether it's eggs or a patty melt plate scattered, smothered, covered, and chunked WITH eggs, that's my favorite place for damned near anything, even if I can't get them poached there.

3) what is your fondest egg-related memory?
Back in 1999, I had a few months to kill between my AmeriCorps gigs, and I drove across the country to visit some friends and see some places I had not seen before. I spent a weekend in San Francisco with The Dorcas at her parents' house. One morning, she made me an egg over medium and rye toast for breakfast. It was the first time I had intentionally had an egg prepared any way but scrambled. It was as if a new world had opened before me. For a good year or two after that, I had my eggs over medium. Then, I went to visit My Godbabymama while she was still living in Athens, and she made huevos rancheros (which, as you know, showcases the poached egg) to complement my margaritas one morning (yeah, we're Savannah kids; we don't fuck around with our booze). If poached eggs were easier to come by, I would order them more often, but you can't pull that shit at a joint with a griddle behind the counter. So, my answer is over medium unless poached is on the menu. Thanks, ladies.

4) impress us with your own cooking talents. tell us how you use eggs in the kitchen and the best dish that you feel features them prominently.
I'm pretty much a straight egg-preparer, although the jo-style scramble (usually combined with some sort of hash brown) is a perennial favorite.

7) egg-splain me this: why does the U.S. bleach their eggs white and not leave them their natural brown?
"Speaking as a black man from America, which is a racist society. No matter how much you hear us talk about democracy, it is as racist as South Africa or as racist as Portugal, or as racist as any other racialist society on this earth. The only difference between it and South Africa is that South Africa: South Africa preaches separation and practices separation; America preaches integration and practices segregation. This is the only difference. They don't practice what they preach, whereas South Africa preaches and practices the same thing. I have more respect for a man who lets me know where he stands, even if he's wrong, than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil."

8) during that o' so strange egg binge sometime in january, guess how many eggs HaterTot ate in 1 week?

I love ordering the chicken and egg biscuit at Chick-Fil-A for precisely this reason. It's like a philosophical conundrum for breakfast!
