My midget man was sick this week. I got a phone call on Tuesday from his school alerting me to his condition and requesting that I come pick him. On my way to his school, I stopped at the grocery store and picked up what I consider to be the quintessential sick child supplies: cherry flavored children's Tylenol, real fruit popsicles, strawberries, orange juice, Vernors and a mylar balloon. I also bought him a new Hot Wheels, but that wasn't a mandatory item. I realized that those were the same things my mom used to feed me for lunch when I was sick as a child. And as soon as I was feeling better she would buy me a Happy Meal for lunch. Ace is better, but I skipped the post illness Happy Meal because I watched Supersize Me recently and I found is so thoroughly distasteful that it might be a long, long time before I eat at the golden arches again.
So, my fellow lunchers, what did you eat for lunch when you were a sick kid? And, WFL on this hot, hot July day?

On sick days Mom made: Turkey sandwiches with sprouts, muenster cheese, tomato, honey mustard and mayo. Cranberry juice. Apple slices. And her "get the sick out" concoction of chopped garlic in fresh lemon juice, with salt to taste. She also made me take oscillococinum, a homeapathic thingy that is supposed to fight flu symptoms. No toys, lots of tv.
Lunch today will be on the road as I am driving up to see my midget (little bro) in CT this afternoon.
Maybe a sandwich from So's Your Mom.
Aw, poor little guy! My mom had several stand-bys. For the flu, there were saltines & ginger ale, and when I was able to keep food down, chicken bullion cube soup. For a cold, tomato or chicken noodle soup. And probably more ginger ale. Ginger ale was a common theme - I think she would let us have it when we had colds b/c she felt bad for us. I was actually sick as hell a couple of months ago & my mom came & picked me up & drove me home & made me anything I wanted. I can't remember now what it was. I think I just wasn't very hungry. Hm. My mom's the best! I probably had oodles of noodles.
Lunch today = office pizza. I guess we're ordering from Pizza Slut - a switch from Domino's. I'm not excited.
I wonder if this is why I'm not a big soup fan - my mom would always make soup when I was sick. No matter the illness, there was always an appropriate soup. Hm.
my mom didn't feed me anything special or comforting. she never believed that i was sick even when i came down with pneumonia in 8th grade. she forced me to go to school until finally she saw i was coughing up green goo...yeah, the C-Choi was piece of work back in the day.
but if i were to have a child, popsicles and homemade chicken soup would definitely be on the menu.
i'm at a work conference right now and have no idea WFL. hopefully not anything too carb-tastic, as i have been eating bread like it's my third job.
also, glad to hear that the midget is feeling better!
Microwaved applesauce, Miu?
I just had a late breakfast of 5 pieces of bacon [say it with me, mmmmmmmmmm, bacon...] and 3 eggs scrambled in some of the bacon fat. I used to date a guy who scrambled eggs in Pam. I think that's vile. Unless eggs are poached or boiled, they need to be cooked in either copious amounts of butter or even better, bacon fat.
My actual lunch will probably be late and fairly light.
god, bacon. earlier today, someone had a bacon something, b/c I could smell it & it was driving me *crazy*. maybe they'll have bacon pizza for lunch . . . .
My Mom would hook me up with some of her Mom's (Baba) outrageously good chicken soup. When Baba made chicken soup, she'd start with a whole chicken, and work from there. It was awesome, and cured all that ailed ya. I think my Mom kept a mason jar of it in the freezer for emergencies.
Once my Mom even tried to trick me, and gave me some chicken soup that she said she had made, and asked me if it was as good as Baba's. I said it was exactly as good as Baba's, then she told me that it WAS Baba's. So I was like, "HA! You think I don't know her work when I taste it?!"
I don't know, but I wish I weren't here. God, I just got out of a deadly meeting. Snore. And I stood in the back so I could make my exit whenever, but then my boss came in. So I was there for most of the meeting & now my feet hurt. Yawn. The head guy running the meeting is such a talker.
LT, the reason that mankind has not yet met its full potential, and never will, is:
Meetings
Strangely, the meal I remember most from sick days when I was a kid is a garden salad with chunks of colby cheese, croutons, and Wish-Bone Italian Dressing. When I was little, I had a lot of sinus problems so I stayed home more with headaches than with fevers. This was in the interim period between mom working before kids and mom working after kids so I would spend that day sacked out on the couch watching The Price Is Right, Ryan's Hope, and All My Children.
Lunch today was a carnitas burrito from Chipotle with Sunshine's sister. [insert sister/lunch joke here]
For the record, my sick day food these days generally consists of soup - mine if I have a recent batch around, one of the non-condensed varieties otherwise. I also tend to rely on small but equal amounts of NyQuil and Tennessee whiskey to exorcise the illness.
I seem to remember getting quite a bit of cottage cheese when I was sick – something my mom got from her mom that I don’t think was beneficial at all. I used to put black pepper on it. Applesauce (cold), toast, chicken and stars, orange popsicles, cherry Hi-C and 7 up. I LOVED St. Joseph’s baby aspirin.
Price Is Right is right, Quake! I was a Holly man, myself. Also, we're talking 20 - 25 years ago, but I can still come across an episode of the Young and the Restless and pretty much know what's going on.
Lunch today was braunschweiger, salami and provolone on an onion roll with mustard mayo, lto, pickles and a little horseradish sauce. I just looked in the mirror and I think I’m starting to look like josephus. Side of pasta salad.
Holly was the redhead, right?
She was my favorite, too. She always seemed a little more down to earth than the blondes.
Oh yeah, all the crap tv back before cable . . . . When we lived in Berlin in the early-mid 80s we only had one channel - AFN (Armed Forces Network!) so you had to be sure to get up before Family Feud & Price is Right were over & then you had to suffer through Donahue, Ryan's Hope & General Hospital before afternoon cartoons started. We didn't have a vcr either, so sick days while we were living there weren't much fun. At least we got a vcr by the time I was in jr. high. The only other option was the old Atari 2600, but since I was sick, I just wanted to sit & veg out. Ugh! I forgot how crappy sick days were back before vcrs!
Sandwich today with a peach and a couple of plums. I think I need another snack still though.
I hated taking medications when I was younger and pretty much still do today. Whenever I did get sick I pretended I wasn't because that would just take away from my playtime. I was a dork too, I liked going to school.
The blondes were Janice and Diane, if memory serves.
I used to get pink-eye all the time. And they would give you that jelly to put into your eyes & you couldn't see for an hour afterwards. That was the worst b/c you couldn't watch tv, couldn't read, couldn't play Atari. You just had to sit there blind & listen to tv or radio. Ugh. I'd rather have strep throat than deal with that crap again!
meetings: none of us is as dumb as all of us
Wasn't it Diane who claimed she had a years-long affair with Bob?
wookie - for christmas a couple of years ago, my mom got me a big block of sticky notes with that saying on it. And when I use them (at work, clearly) - nobody notices.
I had a bowl of split pea soup and a small Mediterranean salad. And I think I have drank a gallon of water. It is fucking hot out there!
I used to have (and still have) Instant noodles and a glass of warm milk yes my fav!!
