HT's computer died, so i am posting today and she'll post tomorrow...look how flexible the OWFL-ers are!
so, today's topic: what to eat during the heat?
apparently, across the US, this week is going to have unbearably hot weather...a "heatwave" that hasn't been experienced in DC since 2002. (incidentally, i was here 2002, but i don't remember it being that bad. but then again, i may have blocked it out of my memory due to it being so traumatic. my california sensitivities are unable to stand the humidity you all grew up with.)
therefore, OWFLers, wow us with suggestions on what to eat that won't add to the sweat already dripping off of our brows. and yes, do not forget to tell us WFL where you are.

Many thanks to LC for stepping into the void. I'm actually camped out in her office, on her office mate's computer. This was going to be my topic today, too, as I think the heat is on everyone's mind.
When it's hot, I lose my appetite. Of course A/C makes it a lovely 70 degrees all year, but if I have to be in the weather, I'm not eatin'.
Today for lunch is left over organic wheat pasta. Boring. And, carb tastic. I don't know what's been up with me lately, but I've been eating bread and the like like it cures cancer. (which, I have on good authority, it does not) Going to the gym, too - as there can be no more excuses. Blah.
Ugh, it's hot out! I'm sure I had a lovely patch on my back/butt from all the sweat pouring off me while standing on the metro platform. By the time I got cooled down (thank god this was a car with good a/c) it was time to get off the train & trudge through the heat to my office. Days like this make me wonder why I don't drive . . . .
I could *really* go for some gazpacho today. Argh. Alas, I even took a long look at the Listrani's menu & they don't have *any* soups, it appears. So I don't know. Maybe salad. Hm, maybe sushi. Maybe a bagel with tuna. What I *really* want, is a sno-cone while I'm sitting outside sunning my legs. But that won't do b/c the sweat patch will re-appear. Siiiiigh.
I moved back here from Bermuda in 2002. I don't remember it either - probably b/c the humidity in Bda is like 80% year-round, so even DC humidity didn't seem so bad.
i hate humidity. it makes me want to cry. i yearn for desert heat a la SoCal.
i've been carb-tastic all weekend long as well. HT can attest that i had like 6 or 7 pieces of bread at la tasca right after i had just feasted on some cous cous i made at home. but it's no surprise since carbs usually make up like 80% of my diet.
i am having more cous cous and left over mac and cheese i made last night at midnight. ugh, gyming today is in order.
piece of advice: do not get cold asparagus soup. that stuff is conde nast. but a nice vichyssoise would be divine today.
I ordered gazpacho while out to lunch over the weekend and they served it with tortilla chips. I think it might have been good gazpacho, too, but I’ll never know since I couldn’t get the thought out of my head that I was eating spoonfuls of very mild, watery salsa (which I suppose I was…I guess it’s a fine line).
I discussed the heat and lunch with a co-worker just a moment ago. We’re going to get salads at the closest place possible (Baja Fresh - @ 40 feet door to door). Haven’t had the chipotle-glazed chicken salad in a while. Burned myself out on it – but it’s sounding pretty good right about now. I could see me eating it everyday this week.
Jo, are you still in town?
I too hit the closest place to eat outside of the building. And interestingly enough, I ventured outside because I'm so damn cold! They have the AC cranked up I guess to counter the extreme heat, but i'm freezing. The 3 minute walk to the buffet place cured that.
I have a tennis match today after work, and i'm not too excited about it because i'm sure someone will keel over from heat stroke. So anyhoo, I had lots of protein. A slice of flank steak, some chicken. Then some spinach and broccoli.
And lots and lots of water today.
I am trying to drink more water this week. I love how I decide to binge out on food the two weeks before I have to go Hawaii. I'm good like that.
Trying to rein it in though.
Miu, my weekend was pretty boring, and my apologies again to Uni, Mr. Uni and LT for bailing on crossing the river. It really had nothing to do with the river at all, and more that I no longer wished to be out, and wouldn't have been very fun to be around.
to answer your question diz (ricotubbs already did but i feel like reiterating) jo is in chicago.
oh and reiterating means REPEATING in case you didn't know...ask HT about that one.
going to eat carbs now. i should drink more water. but it makes me pee too much, and i'm lazy.
Lunch wound up being a BBQ Crunchy Chicken Salad (or some such wordy thing) from CA Tortilla. It was ok. It would have been better without the black beans. I just don't like black beans. Good news 1 = since I don't like them that much, I didn't eat very many of them, so nobody will have to suffer the later effects of beans. Good news 2 = didn't eat the whole thing, so there's plenty for lunch tomorrow! So I don't have to go out in the hot hot heat! Yay!
Must work out today, too. Big fat cow. Moo. And it's almost warm enough in my cube to make me sweat. Not quite, but like a degree more, and I would be embarrassed to stand up. But it's just hot enough to put me to sleep. Snore.
couscous is yummy. at least it's wheat couscous so i can feel somewhat healthy about the whole thing.
i added sauteed onions, cherry tomatoes, and 'shrooms along with dill, and plump golden raisins. also roasted some squash and drizzled them with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. it's a nice light mediterranean dish for this weather! unfortuately, i forgot the crumbled feta which adds an extra something to it...damn!
oops, for some reason, i thought diz was dipso. i'm not reading very carefully these days...
Mmm - that sounds good wookie. I might have to stop at the store on my way home . . . .
Miu - go back to the basics - shapes. A sail-boat is a semicircle with 2 triangles on top. Voila! Art! Don't forget a little stick-figure sailor man! And a row of smaller semicircles for waves! Oh, and congrats - that's awesome!
Probably a salad today, or I may just leave early and grab one box of cherry and another box of lemon flavored italian ice treats from the store (if only I could find some of those flat mini wooden scooper things).
Ugh. Forget what I said about not eating enough beans to have any effect. I guess I don't eat them often enough to have any sort of immunity to their effects. Pressure's growing . . . . ow.
Miu, I know lots about sail boats. I had my first solo sail at 5 years old and have probably logged 1000's of hours.
The big thing is to capture the relationship to the wind. That may be hard to do, as wind is invisible, but that's 100% about what sailing is about. Harnessing the power of wind to propel you through the water.
Mrs. Reno made some good cous cous this weekend. Not sure about any secret ingredients, but I liked the orange bell pepper
LT, I hate to say it, but you know that I know what you're going through. That Gas-X I was forced to procure on the way down to beach week really did the trick though. You might want to head out and pick some up.
Ugh. I'm not sure which option is worse: go out in this muggy heat to get Gas-X or just suffer. Hm. Maybe I'll try some Tums.
Dammit! I have no Tums!
Anybody else seen W's "shit" caught on tape (cnn.com)? Kinda funny, but big deal. I just wish we had a president who chewed with his mouth closed.
Phew, that salad is a serious workout on the taste buds.
Completely, Peep. I was going to say something, but decided to let it pass.
HA!!!!
gas is fun when you're out and about. But in cube-land, it can be downright scary
I had a julienne salad that I swear to god weighed 8 pounds. Now I am tired. I may doze off at my desk.
I think adults need to take back nap-time from the kindergarteners of the world. Legal adults, UNITE!
I am SO with you WD. I would be such a better worker with nap time incorporated into my day. I love napping. I did it twice yesterday. It was delish.
Peep- maybe you should just go home...and take an adult nap.
What's wrong peep? You can't trust the fine upstanding citizens of Chicago to leave your unattended bike leaning against the outside of the building? The world we live in today!
Ugh Peep. This all could have been avoided if you had watched the weather before leaving. I can't believe you don't have heat stroke!
And good news for all in my immediate proximity! I didn't get Gas-X, but it passed on its own. And I don't mean I passed it. Let's just say it was more than gas that needed getting rid of.
Congrats LT!
Peep, your day sounds terrible. You need to go home and drink alone until you pass out. Or "nap," which is what I prefer to call it.
Here's one for you Peep. I was going into my garage at work (we can park bikes there), and the guard said I couldn't bring my bike in because I didn't have a 2007 bike parking permit. I told him that we were in the year 2006, and my permit clearly said 2006. He said that they have issued new ones for 2006-2007. I told him that's nice, but mine was for 2005-2006, so still valid. He insisted that I get a 2007 permit. So I said sure thing, i'll go do it right now, and started to bike into the garage. He said I couldn't go into the garage because I didn't have a 2007 sticker, so I said....
Long story longer, had to park it outside, go to the parking permit people, get the stupid 2007 sticker, and then finally bring my bike into the garage.
I think the problem is with the guards. Wackenhut. They got the wack part right...
I think Peep is about to go postal. This is exciting.
That sucks Miu, what a jerk.
Mr. Uni once parked his bike in front of my house, locked it to a pole, and came in for about 20 minutes.
When he left, it had been stolen. And it was locked! That was some fast thievery!
Miu - I hope you stole the granddaughter's bike for you personal use. Yay - plastic flower basket & streamers!! Banana seat!!!
And wow - I just got a massive craving for Breyer's coffee ice cream. Must. . . fight! Ass . . . too . . . big!
Uni - you've got to be kidding me. That's the gayest gang name ever.
Wow, miu...i'm angry just thinking about that prick. I hope you went off on that guy.
I have a “chuck buddy” here at work. Our tastes for Chuckles jelly candies complement each other perfectly. I can’t stand black chuckles. They’re her favorites. She doesn’t like orange! ORANGE! I mean…that’s insane. So we buy Chuckles together and trade black for orange. Everyone should have a chuck buddy.
My Chuckle rankings:
5 – Black
4 – Green
3 – Red
2 – Yellow
1 – Orange!!!
Anyway, the chuckles are all gone now...and I don't feel too good.
Well, haven’t heard from Josephus. That’s okay. I’m kinda in the mood for a few cold ones and a little me time tonight. Anybody else do Hell’s Kitchen? I’m not proud.
I LOVE GORDON RAMSEY!!!!!!! And ooooooh, Sara is eeeeeevil!!!! What an awesome show. In the free paper they give you on the metro, it always has (snarky) tv listings. So today, it had 'Hell's Kitchen' listed and the description was: "Chef Ramsey yells and throws things." Awesome!
Aw...the free paper ruined it.
Yeah, I'd like to see Sara slice something off of herself, but really, I'm just glad Tom's gone.
Oh god, that guy was revolting. I threw up a little every time he was onscreen. Man, I know they say never trust a skinny chef, but the flip side is never trust a chef who sweats buckets just from standing up too long. Ew!
And he looked like Danny Aiello. Don't even get me started...
You have just ruined Danny Aiello for me.
Wow. LT, I read your last post, first, and thought you were talking about Mr. Uni. I was so confused.
Yeah, cuz he's such a porker!
Does Mr. Uni talk like that?
If Garret doesn't win, the fix is in.
Ha! Yeah, Mr. Uni - teacher of the children - talks like a moron.
And no way, dude. Heather is totally going to win. Although I'm afraid that they're giving her all this air time & such to set up her for a fall (e.g. NOT WINNING). Garrett should definitely be #2, though. ;-p
Hence my confusion, LT.
Also though, what is Hell's Kitchen? Isn't there some show called Top Chef? Or are those the same?
Chicago lunch at J. Alexander's.
I had the Maui Steak and some maytag bleu cheese coleslaw.
Hell's Kitchen stars Chef Gordon Ramsay, a brit. I've never seen Top Chef, but I'm going to go out on a limb here & say, like Velveeta, it's a cheap imitation. Wasn't Top Chef the one with the celebrities all trying to cook? These are just regular schmos. And in some cases, irregular schmos.
Did you have a hot waitress at J. Alexander's, Jo?
The help at J. Alexander's was not as hot as usual.
Much to my dismay.
Looking for a cool lunch favorite, why not try a delicious quick and easy, crisp and crunchy shrimp salad? Check out this recipe and other lunchgoodies here: http://www.starbucks.com/retail/tazo.asp
Thanks!
