I've mentioned it before, but I'm going to take this opportunity to make my feelings explicit.
The Original What's For Lunch is losing its way.
While the posters over the last few weeks are to be commended for their creativity in linking lunch to other topics, and have generated interesting, informative and fun discussions, we have strayed from our purpose. "What's For Lunch?" has become secondary to other topics, and again, we're left without a place to go for lunch counsel and discussion.
I discussed my concerns with TheCzar this weekend, and he called from an undisclosed location with an idea that I think incorporates the best of both worlds, including The Schedule.
Every day, there will be two posts. The first will be a simple "What's For Lunch?" This will be the spot to tell us what you're having, ask for (and provide) counsel, debate the merits of mustard v. mayo etc. The Czar and I can work out who will be responsible for putting up this post, as it needn't say more than those three little letters. (uh, and for LT - those letters are W-F-L)
The second will be the post to discuss topics that are loosely lunch related (lunch boxes, cool lunches, lunch songs, lunch dances, lunch movies, lunch esoterrorism - what have you), and this is the post that you will be signing up for on Uni's fantastic schedule. This way, we can accomodate the needs of the OWFLers AND remain a fun, loose, sociable community.
Use this post to discuss, and if this is something that folks are generally in favor of, we will start tomorrow. Either way, be sure to sign up for your day(s). Also, please tell us, what's in your brown bag today? Or, for those who need a more literal question: What's for lunch?

Of course this is just an idea...what do you folks think? I tholught we could call the more social freestyle post "The Eating Club". Think about it, share your thoughts. This would be a big move for OWFL which might require some site tinkering so we could explain ourselves to the masses. I'll share more of my thoughts a bit later.
I don't necessarily need lunch advice on a daily basis, but I have really enjoyed the lunch themed discussions. I am in support of the dual track system, as long as it's easy to check what's for lunch, then chat with The Eating Club. Hell I'll even sign up to post.
To quote Marvin: Man, I don't even have an opinion.
I smell bacon.
I'll do whatever. I'm so tired, I wish I could be back in bed right now. I can't even think or focus on anything. I think I need a smoke and another cup of coffee.
Uni, if you can't smoke, you could throw some skoal into your folgers crystals. MMM... two birds, one stone.
I am not a fan of the two post idea. I think it is just too much, too confusing.
I brought my lunch today: leftover quiche with aspargus, ham and gruyere, a mass of strawberries, green grapes and two little vanilla cookies. But I won't be eating for several hours.
Rosie, that is quite a responsibility. What I do in that situation is take care of myself. I order what I like. I figure hey, if they wanted to get something they liked, they would have A) done it themselves, or B)dropped enough hints so as to make it clear what they want.
If we don't have two posts, I would be in favor of a stricter adherence to discussing lunch.
Rosie - can you order two types of pizza, just in smaller sizes? Or maybe a boring pizza, and then wings and a salad?
Rosie-que- do the chix bbq pizza, wings and salad...that all sounds delicious. It's such a rainy crappy monday in DC today that something different may be a good pick me up!
I'll be eating the other half of my rotisserie chicken sandwich from BM with a schmear of creamed spinach with a side of greenbean salad from dinner last night. I also have an asian pear that I'll be eating soon because I'm hungry.
I am picking up lunch on the way into work today. Not sure what to do yet.
I think the "two post solution" may appear confusing and even a little scary at first. But change is scary and a decision needs to be made on how to go forward. Having a weekday consistent WFL post gives the blog a consistent message and it reflects the orignal intent of the foundation of the blog. Plus it makes it easier for new people to join us by coming by to discuss lunch or simply get ideas about lunch through reading our selections and duscussions. Having the second "Eating Club" post allows us to maintain the fun frewheeling discussion that is often a tad esoteric but reflects the evolution of the friendships and comradery that the blog has created. In "The Eating Club" we have an outlet to express ourselves more, and getaway from the daily grind (which is what most of us use the blog for). By creating a seperate "Eating Club" we are able to keep this blog lunch based and still satisfy our need to bullshit about things that may not be as directly tied to lunch. Again this is just an idea and we need to hear from you on this. Should we decide to try this I am confident that there will be bumps in the road and utimately it may not work out. That's fine, but I am all for giving it a try.
LizTurtle made some great points over on the schedule post about hoe a variety of voices and growth have made the blog better. I think the "two post solution" might easier for new folks to join in and get into a rhythm with us on the WFL post without thinking they are crashing a party.
Speaking of new people...what do you non-oldtimers think? Please share with us.
I'll admit that I refresh my browser about every minute or two. Y'all have become my companions throughout the work day in the few weeks I've been on this blog. I need support to get through my desk jockey job, and I fear that if the topics are strictly lunch, that I won't have anything to look forward to after 1:00 when the central time crew goes to lunch.
What about a morning Lunch post and an after lunch Eating Club post to carry us through the afternoon?
miu, I'm feeling burgery today. In fact, I would probably give something special away to the person who could produce me an oliveburger right now.
So miu, I say burger.
I don't see a problem with the current system, and think the two posts may muck things up a bit. I don't forsee myself checking in on both, it would be only one.
But I could just check in on the one and I guess that would be okay.
Do the salad, Miu. The fries will leave you feeling really, really full for the rest of the day. Plus, you don't want to reverse all the work you did!
Sounds like you deserve fries there Miu.
700 crunches. I've, maybe, done that many in my whole life combined.
Fries indeed...
I think burgers require fries, Miu. And a coke, too. If you are going to do it, do it right. And make sure you eat light for dinner and all day tomorrow as penance.
miu where are you getting the burger?
Get both the fries and a salad with your burger. Eat some salad first to help take the hunger edge off. Then maybe you won't feel inclined to eat the entire serving of fries. You shouldn't deprive yourself if you really want something! Especially if you did 700 crunches yesterday!
watchdog thanks for your opinions. I thought about that as well, but I guess I would see the daily WFL post as the one that's more "business" ie, I'm having this for lunch, or I want ideas on what to have. The second "Eating Club" post (and I am not wedded to that name) would be topic based, and frankly it may not appear everyday. It would be dictated upon when people signed up to do one, or when someone got a last minute urge (and no one else had signed up). So watchdog you might see it as a bonus post in your pretty little head...
Peep, eat what fish eat... other, weaker fish.
Perhaps a Whaler or a filet o fish.
Peep, I think you feel like a cheesesteak, with extra mayo, lto, and extra hots.
Miu, I still think salad. I love burgers, but when I need to be healthy-ish, I don't eat the bun, and no fries. Plus, the burger/salad combo is underrated.
How funny is it that BUrger King actually had a sandwich called "The Whaler" and introduced it at the highpoint of the Save The Whales movement?
I'm surprised they didn't have a Star Trek IV/Burger King value meal.
Peep, I think you need to go to Portillo's and get an Italian combo with hot peppers. When did you start drinking yesterday? Before or after you texted me? I wanted to go out so bad, but it's ppor form to take a 5 year old to the bar.
I think it is called the BK Big Fish now...
"think".
Don't front Uni.
You love the Big Fish.
Peep - do the cheesesteak, if you need extra healing get a runny fried egg on it.
If that is true, poor Mr. Uni.
The incredible edible egg!
I just think fried eggs make slutty food even sluttier. Eggs and totino's pizza rolls.
Ham & chicken club on a "homemade" pita from Best Sandwich Place. LTO, Bacon & cheddar come standard. I added extra mayo, sweet peppers and avocado.
Had a salad for lunch, kinda makes up for all the pizza, burgers, and chinese I had this weekend. Sorta...
I made a great sandwich for lunch yesterday that kinda just evolved as I went. Thick cut multigrain bread, first I toasted it with some butter, fresh garlic, and colby-jack cheese. Then I added turkey breast, avocado, and tomato. It was quite yummy.
Peep, are you just completely disregarding my suggestion of the combo with hot peppers? All that grease will make you feel GREAT!
I totally talked to Sammy, and even flapped the bread slices so he could talk back. He said "look mang, I may look delicious, but you don't wanna eat me, I may have food poisoning or something." So I was like "I'm willing to risk it Sammy. A sangwich like you comes along only so often, and you are my creation, so I can do as I please with you." Then Sammy tried the ol' "If you love something, set it free." And I retorted with the ol' "Oh i'll set you free allright, only after you have a magical journey, let me know if you see Lemmiwinks down there."
And the rest is history...
So lemme get this straight WD. You have a lemmiwinks down there to keep sammy company? How did this gerbil get in the Watchdog tract in the first place?
I mean I know back door is the answer, but for shame... for shame
Lunch was spiced horse meat served on some sort of paper product with a cheez sauce and some bean paste.
(Nachos bel Grande.)
so tired...
There is NO coffee in my office! I am going to go CRAZY!
Oh my lord. My internet was out all morning.
Lunch = salad with almost past-prime arugula, sprouts, tomato, sliced hardboiled egg (shout-out Uni!) and some almost past-prime turkey. I think in another day that turkey will be too slimy to eat. Oh, and topped with my dad's becoming-world-famous-recipe salad dressing. I'll have to ask him if it's ok to diseminate that recipe.
As far as the 2 posts - I'm not sure. I tend to keep the blog open in one window & update it through the day. I would lean towards it being too much trouble. But I suppose I could have two windows open. Anyhoo, I'm willing to give it a try.
Hee hee. I don't even have an opinion. I need to see that movie again.
Lizturtle, how devestating. How did you manage to get through the morning with no internet?
And where you getting all this almost past prome salad ingrediants? The Soviet market?
Today was a hamburger and some fries. Not at all creative. I didn't have much of a choice. :(
However, I need advice but I also need ideas. I think evolution is fine.
Sunshine, I was more productive this morning than I've been in years. It was awful.
All my almost-past-prime produce & protein (how's that alliteration, beyotch!) came because the rotting fairies came into my apt late at night over the weekend and replaced my fresh veggies & meat with rotting stuff. They also replaced my nice almost-not-green banana with some old liver-spotted one. I ain't no commie.
So Diz I guess that was a yes on your part? JV told me offblog that he is ok with making the 2 post change. No word from the hater, rico, tafkalc, peep or e-que on the subject yet...
Yeah jo, good stuff. I think that a two posting thing will let creative posts be done when people really get the hankering to say something .. not to force creative posts with a time limit. That will make HT stop fretting the fact that she hasn't the time to impress us. :)
So, the day-to-day is fine. However, we dont' always have the draw the line on having an interesting thought for the WFL is it sparks discussion?
Where the hell is Rico?!
Is it ethical to look at people's other blogs?
I looked at the Jade's, and I posted a reply, and now I feel like a voyeur.
Is that ok, or is that a breach of protocal?
You're okay Sunshine, we used to link to the individual blogs of OWFL members, until we had some Ethical issues.
Are people okay with a test month of the "2 post plan"? The writers of the 2nd post or "Eating Club" (what do you want to call it?). Should sign up on Chrissy's calendar. The WFL post of the day can be put up by whichever of the contributors feels like it (say if it is your birthday aor a special holiday and you want to tailor make the WFL post, then jump on early and do it). If one isn't up by 11:00 est please take the initiative to put one up.
How is this sounding?
TheCzar broke the anonymity rule!!!!!!!
Sunshine, you're all good. We all read each others (even though Miu thinks we don't). I even updated mine today. Of course, the Mysterious Disappearing Rico doesn't read anyone's but TAFKALC's...
Rico reads mine, he just says he doesn't. I love it when members of the OWFL read and comment on mine.
