WFL 5/11/2006 Rainy day

So it looks like rain in much of the country today. Can't go outside, humidity is up, it's just a bummer when it rains.

What's for lunch on this kind of day? What can you get without going outside? What isn't ruined by a little water? What makes you feel better about being all cooped up?

Discuss and enjoy.

Jeesh. I am not going outside today. that limits me to the lunch options at the building cafeteria. Guess that means boiled ham, processed cheese, brown lettuce and 'manase' on stale white bread. That sucks. If only somebody would invent some sort of portable roof that I could carry with me when it rains.

Delivery...pizza, chinese, take-taxi is pretty popular out there in the burbs.

Tell the boss that you feel like the department could use a social lunch opportunity to catch up, and of course for solidarity...that way you can get work to flip the bill.

If it weren't for the underground parking garage, I might write lunch off entirely on a day like today, but I COULD manage to get food without ever really being outside.

What I wish I had was a steaming bowl of soup, and I mean a hearty, chunky more-stew-than-soup bowl of soup. There's something sublime about looking out a rain-streaked window and filling your mouth with soupy goodness. (Who's going to jump on that line?)

I once made an Eastern European Root Vegetable Stew (which I referred to as Iron Curtain Soup). If you have to brush dirt off of it when you harvest, it was in there: potatoes, turnips, parsnips, beets. I made it for some friends who were visiting me in Philipsburg, Montana because she was a vegetarian, and those selections are rather limited out there. When they showed up at my place, the beets had made my kitchen look like a crime scene, but that was some of the best rainy-day soup I've ever eaten, much less made.

I wish I had that now. As it is, I'll probably just hide from the rain with a granola bar and a mug of tea.

ooo. Soup sounds good. However Iron curtain soup, aside from the name doesn't apeal to me.

I met my cousin out last night and her Philly Law firm picked up the bill. I had 2 mojitos and some sort of overpriced Tapas from Rumba. Unfortunatly, my boss is in a day long meeting today, so I don't think she'll be down for getting me a teambuilding meal today. I like the way you think though Unicorn.

My 92-year-old Russian Grandma (Baba)used to make what she called "Depression Cake", which I guess was whatever cake-like ingredients that she could scrounge up around the house or from the neighbors. It was never the same, but always good, according to my Mom.

Guess there was this time called the Depression (and evidently years after for my grandparents) where money was tight.

The rain is here today because I have a flight to catch. Its rained on my last 5 consecutive flight days. Will be raining on my return too. WTF?

And WFL? Don't know, but I have to give a big presentation to some of the higher-ups, so i'm gonna eats some motivating food, which may also be rainy day food, we shall see...

Watchdog, try a soup and 1/2 sandwich combo. It's light so the butterflies in your stomach will not be bothered, and the soup will help deal with the rainy day.

Good luck and stick it to the man.

I may need to hit you up for your root stew recipe e-quake. I made one before and it was ok...I think I went too heavy on the beets because that was really the only flavor that stood out. And it was probably the one that I least preferred.

Clam chowder sounds divine right now, the thicker and chunkier the better. Alas, if Jo were around today he'd say something incredibly immature and jo-ish like..."you like it think and chunky, eh??! heh heh heh!"

Forgot the whole WFL thing. I brought my lunch today, I must've felt the rain in the air because I did a soup and sandwich combo. Sandwich is vegelicious with LTO, sprouts, sliced radishes, cucumbers, grated carrots and hummus schmear and my TJ's roasted red pepper and tomato soup with an added boost of chopped up spinach.

I'm excited about lunch today! It's roti from this place called Rita's near Howard U. I ordered lamb, but they don't have that. I probably should have gone with goat, but I went with chicken. Damn. It's probably too late to change it. Ah well. Anyways, this place has awesome roti, and I know it's true, because the people in my office from Trinidad say it's really good. Yum!!!! And perfect for the crappy rainy day!!! Ah, and extra spicy - mmmmmm. I'll probably have hot butt later today.

Its beautiful here in Houston. 75F breezy and more sunshine than you can shake a Mikey at.

Today will be Riva's chicken Picatta. I feel like sitting in the sunshine on their patio. Maybe a lunctime beer is in order? What does everyone think?

dizkonekdid said...

Peep, its normally because most people have impaired eyesight in the rain. Many of them don't let their eyes "soft focus" so they can't see through the windshield.

Actually, I think most people should have their licenses taken away.

In my experience, if my day permits me to consider whether beer with lunch is okay, the answer is yes.

And, diz, I'm with peep on this one: if it's 75, sunny, and under consideration, I think you owe yourself a lunchtime beer (along with everyone who doesn't have that perfect trifecta today).

Jada said...

Peep, do you wear a helmet when you ride your bike?

Is there really a band called The Silver Jews or did you make that up?

Owlet said...

i am BACK! huzzah. i love the silver jews. good stuff. truly.
well, lunch, yes. rainy days, i must admit are the days that are closest to my heart. i haven't quite indulged in lunch yet, but it seems to me that a warm cup of tomato soup always hits the spot. soup in general i guess. and some grilled cheese. mmmm.
it's not quite rainy in new york yet, but that hovering ominous sort of cumilinimbus type thing going on...to be honest though, i really can't get enough of the whole soup-salad-sandwich situation. i fucking love sandwiches. and salad. and since it's rainy, soup too.

off i go!

LizTurtle said...

Don't worry, Misschibi - I'm taking the afternoon train up to NYC & I usually bring a dark cloud with me wherever I go . . . .

I have a friend who's really into his jewishness. I'm going to ask him about this Silver Jew band.

I'm so having a beer on the train . . .

I am going to use the break in the rain to go to Senor Chotchky's (The On The Border Next to Chili's) and lunch beer might not cut it. Lunch beers is more like it.

Had some yummy eats at the gourmet buffet. The california roll thingy's were the highlight.

Careful biking out there peep. I was a frequent biker til I fell and ruptured a tendon in my hand, and now I can't bike or do any kind of activity that involves my right hand.

In DC, cabbies are bikers natural enemies. EVERY single incident i've had with a vehicle has been a cab, and same for other bike commuters I know. Are they your enemy in Chi-town too? Perhaps a Side Order topic is why do people who drive all day and make a living by driving suck so bad at driving?

It was "the" hand...bummer.

Hey, i've been requested to bring some Baby Ruth candy bars to Canada cuz apparently they don't sell them there. I went to two major chains (CVS and 7-11) and two small convenience stores and there was no sign of Baby Ruth.

Did they stop making that candy bar or what? Now that I can't find it I want it myself

Speaking of WFL, it looks like it doesn't need to be 75, sunny, or Houston for the answer to be beer. Even if it's 60, rainy, and (almost) DC, beer is still a viable lunch option.

Thanks for the collective suggestion. I have a feeling this afternoon might be slightly less painful.

Heliocentric said...

Earthquake is right. In fact I went with him and Sea Bass and had two pints. Lunch was a lunch chimichanga with 2 Sierra Nevadas. Adios afternoon.

Heliocentric said...

On the bike front, I have never been almost hit by a cab, but I was hit by a garbage truck and knocked down in the middle of the street during morning rush hour.

I don't wear a helmet. I ain't no nerd.

Heliocentric said...

OK, so because of the fun I have had with OWFL, I have revived the blog for my kickball team and I have to say. OWFL runs very smoothly compared to the alternative.

These kickballers have no dicipline, everybody feels compelled to make their own post and there is no conversation.

So to weigh in on recent arguments, two posts is nowhere as confusing as 8, but it is way more confusing that 1.

But this is not a Side Order today so back to lunch. there's been a lot of soup talk, has anybody besides Unicorn actually had soup today?

Jada said...

It's not being a nerd to protect your brain. I am a big time advocate of helmets. But Peep, it's not the messenger bag that makes you look like a hipster, it's the fact that you ARE a hipster that makes you look like a hipster.

I think I am going to run down to Metropolis or White Hen for some soup to supplement my sandwich and fruit. It feels very cold in Chicago and the bottom 6 inches of my jeans are wet. BOOOO!

Heliocentric said...

helmets, seatbelts, pocket protectors, life jackets, condoms, vaccinations, and washing your hands are all nerd things. Us cool kids would rather be in a wheel chair than fenced in by dorkdom.

Jada said...

I'm a nerd and proud!

Heliocentric said...

I repeat, don't fence me in.

My particular fav is "How can I love you if you won't lie down?"

LizTurtle said...

Hee hee. Sunshine, you kill me. Is there even a side order post today? I haven't checked & don't have time - T minus 1 hour and 11 minutes.

My roti was fantastic! The hot sauce was weird, though. I never got a mouthful like "ouch!", but by the end, I was panting. Yummy! The other thing I forgot about roti: chicken is bone-in (hee, i said bone-in). And one of those bones happened to be a spine, which totally reminded me of Uni & Mr. Uni & their neighbor!

i am at home sick and staring at the rain. i made myself 2 gigantic mozzarepas for lunch and am now snuggling up with my cat. this is the perfect rainy day despite the fact that i feel like butt.

i wish i had some soup. i think that would help soothe my throat. i think i'll just make myself some rooibos (red) tea.

maybe i should just go back to bed. bed sounds nice right now.

Lady A said...

I think sunshine had the spinal stew as well...it kind of makes me more queasy to think about it now then when I actually was eating it.

I hit a brickwall. I've stopped working completely. I've lurked on fellow OWFL bloggers other blogs, printed out some recipes that utilize barley and I am now scanning craigslist for a bike. Oh, and I'm also trying to see if there is a LOST marathon in the works so I can get caught up.

LizTurtle said...

Uni, they had a commercial saying you can download the Lost episodes for free at ABC.com!! I don't know if this includes past episodes or just new ones, but download them yourself! Why wait for ABC?!? Did you watch it last night?!?

HaterTot said...

I called Peep a hipster today, too.

Lunch was a dilled egg salad bacon and swiss melt from Cosi. If you like the hard boileds, this is the sangay for you.

I want to sleep.

Unicorn

Don't forget to check the Sotally Tober blog. Just reactivated today.

Also. Lost is featured on iTunes. $0.99 - $1.99 an episode.

And I remember spinal stew, but I don't think I had any... that I know of. Unless Spinal stew was also Roadkill stew, in which case, I had my fill.

That crazy fucker Whippy does some wacky stuff. For example, right now in our kitchen the crockpot is filled with pork for some pulled pork BBQ, but it ain't pork from Giant, no. It's from a wild boar that was hunted by a group of primitive skills enthusiasts using spears with stone points on wooden shafts.

Lady A said...

The roadkill stew is the same as spinal cord stew. At least one of the batches was. I don't remember how many he made, after the first surprise I opted to not partake in his future endeavors.

Heliocentric said...

Pretty sure I was in on the second batch of venison roadkill stew, not the spinal version. I make it a convention in my life to not eat any part of the central nervous system of any animal.

LizTurtle said...

Well, at least you don't have to worry about buckshot!

Heliocentric said...

Just axel grease.

LizTurtle said...

Let us know how the pulled boar BBQ was. Mmmm . . . that sounds good. Did anyone ever read Asterix? When they would cook up wild boar, it always looked so good. Yes, even though it was a comic.

Lady A said...

Umm...LT...your last post was at 3:58...you are supposed to be leaving at 4pm...just an FYI.

Jada said...

Peep is such a hipster he doesn't even try to deny it.

Heliocentric said...

What defines a hipster? Wearing black, carrying around a book of poetry, having opinions on stuff?

Seriously, what's it mean? I'm just a dumb country kid.

Anonymous said...

Dude, all the hipsters are rolling their eyes at you now sunshine.

Lady A said...

He's totally hip because he's into Devotchka.

Lady A said...

sunshine you are a hippie not a hipster!

HaterTot said...

Shut up and go drink your PBR.
