hi all,
the frustrating part of being sick is that you usually cannot taste what it is that you are eating. i've been battling a nasty cold for the past day or two, and now i'm back at the office wondering what i can eat for lunch that isn't just going to taste like nothing.
so, my question is what should one eat when they are feeling under the weather? and of course tell us WFL in your neck of the woods.

I like Potatos and Yucca when I'm sick. They don't really have much flavor to lose, so it works out.
Lunch today is a Pizza Party put on by the Summer Fum committee. I don't know about fun, but I know I'll have free pie. ...mmm pie.
I'm a little hesitant to drop this two days in a row, but I think rainy days and sick days aren't wholly unrelated. When I'm head/chest-cold sick, I really like some sort of spicy Thai soup, some sort of thom kha or along those lines. It tends to cut through the sick with a little bit of taste, and, if I'm very lucky, it even clears my sinuses for a minute or two of unlabored breathing.
Of course, if I'm stomach-or-lower sick, that's not the best path.
Soup is of course the obvious choice. But if you are all souped out go for something with obscene amounts of garlic. You know, until your pores are dripping garlic. And then go ride all kinds of public transportation.
When I am really sick, I combine the soup and garlic. I take some homemade chicken stock I keep stashed in the freezer, defrost, then add a whole head of garlic that has been seperated into individual cloves and peeled. Simmer until the garlic is very, very soft, then puree. It is better then penicillin, which I can't take any way because I am allergic to it.
Oh, and I'm presented with the same option of free pie as Sunshine, but I'm on the fence. I've dealt with enough caterers (not to mention pizza joints) in the last few years that I know anything made for a party greater than 10 and delivered is going to disappoint me, especially at work.
But, nothing says good lunch like free, right?
Yep. Ridiculous garlic chicken soup, complemented by throat-burningly strong ginger tea. That sounds good. I wish I was sick. Haven't eaten since lunch yesterday. Everything sounds good. Char dogs, fries and a root beer. Pizza sounds good, too, though.
SPICY PHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd go for any broth based soup also LC with a some sort of melted cheese sandwich concoction for the comfort factor. If not chicken soup then I'll make myself a pot of hot and sour soup. It's basically just broth (I use beef and chicken), cider vinegar, red pepper flakes, bamboo, mushrooms, a little soy or tamarind, some ginger, tofu and lean pork if I have it on hand. If I want it thickened up a bit I'll thrown in an egg to give it an egg drop soup consistency with a little corn starch. After all is said and done I'll always add in a little sriracha.
I wish unicorn could cook for me everyday.
Free pizza was not from not just any joint. They got us California Pizza kitchen. I had the thai chicken pizza and this rediculous salad with all sorts of crazy stuff that looked like it came from space, but tasted like it came from heaven... But peanut sauce always seems to do that
I'll come and visit ya in Chi-town one weekend Jade to make you soup and cupcakes!
CPK is pretty good for a chain restaurant. I especially like their potato-chicken rosemary pizza, sounds odd but it is delicious and their southwest pizza of some sort with black beans. I've come up with two similar recipes of my own using those bobolis. I love that word...bo-bo-lees.
So that's what? Yogie's little buddy commanding the Confederate army?
Get it, Bo BO Lee.
Hey I work with 8 -10 year olds, that kind of shit is gold with them little dudes.
Speaking of working with younguns, does anybody want to work for me this summer for most of July? See the world. (Albany, NY and DeKalb, IL)
Lunch will be provided
WFL? Also free CPK.
I stand corrected. Every once in a while, people do things right.
No idea what I actually ate. Some sort of chicken-onion pie and some of that heavenly salad. Yay! for free!
I'm a silent reader of this blog and today I just can't stand to be silent any longer. Maybe it's the fact that I didn't eat breakfast, maybe it's the fact that I love home-made soup, but you people are KILLING me! My mouth is watering just listening to you all dish about these tasty treats. I don't know how you do it before you even get to eat lunch! The sad thing for me is that I am on the west coast and it's only 9:30 in the AM :-( Someone shoot me now.
Oh - welcome JW!
Fixed the blogger issue - I'm a moron.
Welcome JW!! Two jade's...one blog...whoa!
Now I want pho and pizza.
I did make a mushroom barley soup last night from one of the recipes I got while I was at work and decided that I was done working at like 3...so the last couple of hours at work weren't a complete and total waste. I brought some of it for lunch today, but me thinks I'll need another component. I'm leaning towards a spinach melt.
Maybe I'm getting sympathy pains here but I too am now coming down with something. My hands are freezing (and I'm a guy), my bones ache, and I swear that my innards have started a square dance.
I'm going home soon. When I do I'm going to take some olive oil (just a table spoon) some garlic cloves, a bit of basil and dill, and then saute' that mixture. Once the garlic has a clear color I'm going to dump in Campbell's finest fatfree tomato soup (great stock) and then take a crusty sour dough bagette, cut it in half and lay in motzarella and toast the affair while my soup bubbles to a high heat.
I feel like crap.
welcome JW
JW, It's so nice to have the perspective of somebody in the land of sunsets and earthquakes.
Yeah Blogger is a silly mistress indeed.
The reason for Mikeysunshine and Sunshine is that I split my time between OWFL and my kickball blog (Sotally Tober), which is also on blogger, but under a different account that I forgot I had. SOmetimes the man in the computer decides which account it wants to use with which window.
I am both, both are me.
Damn. I was hoping for an evil-twin Sunshine, complete with sinister mustache.
JW, I feel for your time difference. I have to admit that several of these threads have me all hungry and bothered, and it usually falls at about the right time for my lunch. Welcome into the light anyway.
JW - welcome! It's nice to have some west coasters so we can chat later. Are you really a Jade, too? Can the OWFL handle two of us? Do you talk about masturbation and not getting laid a lot, too? Oh my ...
SHowing up late for work ... such a hipster thing to do.
I think Mikeysunshine just contains multitudes.
Wait, both of us have sinister mustaches. The way to tell sunshine from Mikeysunshine is that MS is more childish and S is more irresponsible.
To see both in action, go to the FIRST ANNUAL OWFL LUNH & MUSIC EXPOSITION!!!! in July
WatchDog are you around today?? The cafe downstairs in my office bldg. sells Baby Ruths!!!
WD left America for some Maple Syrup, Molson's and Bacon (we call it thich ham) It might be too late for Baby Ruth
YES! But I always imagined Sloth saying: Baby Ruuf! Baby Ruuf!
So that German cannibal got a life sentence today. I WANT a cannibal to join our blog...what an interesting dynamic that would add.
WFL?? Hmmm...I'm thinking human ass...
Do you figure Germans taste different than Austrians?
But who is more f'd up??? The dude who ate the guy, or the guy who WANTED to be eaten alive??!!
Peep, I am so hip I wrap back around to not hip, so I don't think I can be of much assistance to you.
I think the canibal is more f'ed up than the guy who wanted to get ate. Think of it like this: The guy who wants to get eaten can only do it once. the people eater can do it as long as he has victims and doesnt' get caught. 1 time Vs. Many. Canibal by TKO
Ugh. I feel awful, too, but it's my own damn fault (and the fault of those discussing cannibalism - shudder). I made the mistake of eating lamb vindaloo for dinner last night followed by a burrito for lunch today. Not a good choice. I had to cut my shopping trip short so I come back to my friend's apt & be near a non-public bathroom. Ugh. What a maroon! Luckily my friend is still at work. Phew! For both of us!
Both vindaloo & burrito were tasty, though. Damn. I might have to make him take me out for a pizza pie tonight. Diz, I know you're sick, but that meal sounds delish!!
COMBO CURRY LAKSA!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't eat lunch today. I know, I know ...
whoot whoot, west coast babay! though i live in our fair nation's capital, i am O.G. westside all the way. therefore, a hearty welcome to JW.
i had to go to the 'burbs for lunch. i thought i'd get stuck with bad pizza. but turns out we got sushi at a nice place. it was tasty! their specialty roll was called the "bamboo roll" and had warm cooked salmon in the middle, was deep fried, and covered in a mayo and red sriracha sauce.
tafkalc, where did you go? Being a burb whore, I must know. I feel like I've had a similar maki at a place called Kan-pai or something. Was that it? Tell me all!
