hey all,
i have a feeling that i'm not the only one feeling a bit sluggish this morning. so my request today is WFL that can cure this super bowl monday hangover???
now, the super bowl hangover is very different from other hangovers. the reason being that, b/c the game ended around 10pm-ish, i know that most of us had to have passed out by 11pm. technically, we all should've had a good 7 or 8 hours of solid sleep. and since we're not as "young as we used to be", our recovery time is also not what it used to be.
in short, the super bowl hangover just makes you feel really really tired, cranky, and slow in the brain.
now, if you did stay up later than 11pm, then i say you resort to your old tried and true hangover cures.
but for everyone else, WF (post superbowl) L?

I don't know, but our f'ing coffee machine is broken in the office. This may call for a special walk out to . . . somewhere.
Oh, yeah, leftover pizza for lunch. Not so much hungover, but don't-want-to-work-it's-a-Monday lunch.
I'm dropping the big one on this hangover. DTNS, baby! DTNS.
Combo.
Do folks in DC know what a combo is?
I whitened the teeth recently, so no coffee. Red Bull is my friend.
However, TexEsq and I were losers and left a pretty big party when the 4th quarter started. So we fell into bed early.
Note to self: Never trust any tea that claims to aid in health.
The combo is serious business. Do you get it dipped?
Lunch for a co-worker at Daily Grill, but not until 1:00. I may need a tide me over sandwich...
i woke up with a scratchy throat this morning. i went to abp to get some fresh squeezed orange juice. as i was gulping down this sweet nectar, i looked at the label that was stuck to the cup. (i'd always seen it but never bothered to read it.) this is what it said:
100% freshly squeezed oranges, no additives or preservatives.
ok...so far so good. then it continues on to say:
WARNING: This product has not been pasteurized and may contain harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness in children, the elderly and persons with weakened immune systems.
i was trying to help my poor weakened immune system, and now i find that i'm only harming myself with deadly bacteria. WTF!?!
Fruit juice kills.
Oooh. I’m in rough shape. Reading is making me sweat and my attention span is about three words. I just tried to put visine in and the drops just bounced off of my eyeballs. I have to go to a meeting. I want television.
Dipped, of course. Heavy heavy giardiniera.
Zinc, LaChoi!!! ZINC!!!
Well, I'm definitely not nursing a hangover...clogged arteries...but no hangover. Went to a fried food party...it was the first football/sports get together where no one brought any typical snack type food like chips and dip...and definitely NO veggie platter here. If it wasn't fried...it was forgotten!
I indulged in fried cheese, empanadas, broccoli and cheese bites, fried and then smoked ribs, roasted and then fried pork shoulder, wings, tempura bacon, southwest eggrolls, potstickers and of course french fries...good god...after actually writing it all out I really think my heart should've stopped by now....
I think I'll go get a veggie delight from subway for lunch...
Unicorn that sounds heavenly.
I have no hangover today, but I also didn't drink anything last night. I did watch the Superbowl because my dad was working it [running the game clock] even though I knew there was no chance I would see him on camera, I still felt a familial obligation to support my pops.
I think we are having a birthday lunch for me at work today. Not really sure what I am feeling, yet.
The combo is some pretty serious big guns, dipso. I definitely support your decision for the extra giardeneria. I love that stuff, I can eat it straight by the spoonful. Especially the green olives.
Thanks to everyone for all the birthday wishes. It was a good one.
For those not familiar with the term "giardineira" it is what Potbelly calls "hot peppers".
It's a little more than hot peppers, Jo. That conjures up visions of those stupid yellow banana pepper rings. Giardenria [or however you spell it] is full of carrots and celery and cauliflower and olives, as well as hot peppers in an absurd amount of oil. It is hot and damn tasty. And rarely found outside of Chicago.
Jadey...I said plainly it is what "Potbelly calls hot peppers". Potbelly uses giardiniera at all of their locations and call them "hot peppers".
So giardiniera..not to be confused with Giardiasis (or just Giardia)...the intestinal parasitic disease...
and yes Jo...yesterday's fat vat fest was indeed heavenly!
I'm going to have to ask someone later what happened in that meeting.
The olives are good, yes. Personally, I would like to see the percentage of cauliflower at least doubled.
I really didn’t pay attention to a single play. I know that if Seattle had scored 7 more points, my square would have hit and I’d be planning a $2K lunch.
Potbelly actually even sell jars of "hot peppers" (read giardiniera) at the DC locations. I just finished the last one I bought and will pick up another on my way home tonight.
Fine, fine, Jo. You are right. But I do think my elaboration might have at least been helpful or interesting.
Your elaboration would have been just as helpful and interesting had it not included some swipe at my earlier elaboration which could be read as, "To experience giardiniera go get the hot peppers at Potbelly". But your point is taken.
Joe Biden is making me proud on C-SPAN right now.
unicorn -- you took the words right out of my mouth. i was going to say that giardeneria totally sounds like that intestinal disease. perhaps they should rename it to "hot peppers" just so people won't be confused.
or perhaps it's better that people DO think it's the intestinal disease so that the smart people, like us, can enjoy MORE giardeneria and there will never be a shortage??? deep thoughts...
i ate such a large fat adult special this morning that i can't figure out what to eat for lunch today. perhaps a salad is also in order...i think my body is screaming for greens considering all the ben's chili and chicken wings i had over the weekend....oh, and lots of bloody mary's that i do not think can constitute as "veggies".
Jade, Josephus...back to your corners.
When I was knee high to a grasshopper I had a pet lizard named Taeniarhyuchus saginatus.
Has any one had a Rico spotting today?
Rico's out of the office today, he may make a late afternoon blog appearance.
I had a "tide me over till 1:00" ham & swiss sandwich on wheat toast.
I really want to talk politics today, these hearings are great.
"How will we know when this war (on terrorism) is over?"
-Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware)
Who is this anonymous Angel "e-mel" who comes bearing gifts? (and in my 'hood no less) Discreetly identify yourself immediately!
Welcome, e-mel!
I'm still clueless as to who unicorn is, but it seems like the rest of the crew already knows. I am apparently out to lunch on that one. Oh man, I entertain myself.
Gave Brian’s a shot for the combo. The lady offered the choice of hot or mild giardiniera. She called it “hot peppers.”
I opted for hot, of course, although I think the mild might have been more cauliflowery.
They did a fine job. A little too long of a dip, but that’s okay. It’s gone, as is an orange gatorade.
Now, a nice cry.
Unicorn used to be Abunaigirl. But, she really is a "unicorn", so the new name suits.
I have no idea what any of you people are talking about with this "combo" and "dipping" and I'm further confused by the cross refs to potbelly. And, we have awesome giardiniera at home. I don't even consider the Potbelly stuff real giardiniera - it really is more like hot peppers.
I'm cranky. I'm off my meds because I have to go to the Dr. to get these stupid drains out. I just want to be home on my couch watching Magnum. I also have to go to the bank and to cvs - the cab driver is going to love me.
I'm eating wings later and bbq from the -Que's party last night. Thanks again guys for the delivery.
HaterTot--hope the recovery is going well.
Super Bowl eats were from Calvin's BBQ, a fairly new place on Armitage a couple blocks west of Western. They aren't cracking my top 5 rib joints anytime soon. The meat itself was decent but they were a little too well done. I don't like crispy ribs.
Sweet potato fries were tasty, if not a bit limp. Could've used a couple more minutes in the fryer.
Between that and the bacon fest I sizzled up for brunch on Saturday it was a greasy and fatty weekend.
I'm thinking Jimmy John's today.
By the way...what a boring and poorly played (for the most part) Super Bowl, huh? Even the commercials sucked. The Randle-El TD pass was nice, but that was about it.
John Madden needs to hang up his headset.
HT--a "combo" is italian sausage AND italian beef on a roll. The server will "dip" the roll in the beef gravy per your request.
I myself prefer my beefs and combos dry, as I don't like my bread roll to get all soft and slimy.
That game was so boring, I didn't need my percocet to put me to sleep. Twaan was the only highlight in the game.
I can't express enough how happy I am to not be living in Pittsburgh right now. And more importantly, out of broadcast range of Myron Cope.
I don't even know when I can go back, now.
Brian - you're totally right on all counts (ok I don't know much about the Bar B Que). Not to go totally OT but John Madden has had it. He should have hung it up before Pat Sommerall, but he is making PH4t$ bank from EA sports and other licensing firms. Lets face is Fox Football is 4x better than everyone else (I NEVER thought I would say that).
Hatertot - good to hear you're doing fine. Hearing about "drains" almost made me "drain" the fajitas and amazing tortillas last night .. they were homemade flour tortillas and were perfectly chewy and could hold 1/2 of beef, picante, and beans. mmmmmmm
Today was light fair, sliced roasted turkey smothered with apple\fig butter with a huge slice of melted havarti (lemon soaked sprouts and tomato on top) all on cracked wheat roll.
Red bull to top, I will be getting a leaky heart valve soon if I keep it up 'cause then I ran a 51 minute 10K (6.2 mi). At least it made me hungry for the sandwich. :)
I don't know HT, I thought Hines did a good job.
Thanks HT for filling Jade in on my identity!
Sooo...what is the big deal with this Zazz drink?? I bought some over the weekend...and I'm not such a fan...dumped two bottles of it into the sink. Did I miss something? Is there a non-seltzer tasty version of the stuff?? BUT if you do like the Zazz, the 2 ltr. bottles are on sale for .79 cents.
abs, I am still waiting for the hook-up.
Chicago folk, do you get chhese and/or the green peppers on your combos? I used to at Ricobene's. I thought it was a bit much. Also would the Chicagoites consider eggplant parmesan sandwiches and breaded steak sandwiches "Chicago fare"? I always have, but I think I may have been misled by the aforementioned Ricobene's.
dipso, don't you wish you had listened to me about Brian's half a decade ago?
HT I realized last night that I had forgotten to drop a couple things off. Including a Key west snowglobe...
Speaking of seltzer, my non-alcoholic cocktail when I was a kid, was seltzer, salt and lime juice. I couldn't get enough of it.
I'm feeling a tad hateful this afternoon. My cobb salad at Daily Grill was bland and way too shreddy. Plus the worse sports period of the year officially starts today. I hate February.
I personally am not too fond of the combos. I prefer one or the other, usually just the beef. I would never order cheese on mine, sometimes I'll do both hot and sweet peppers.
I also do not consider eggplant or breaded steak sandwiches to be Chicago fare.
Honey 1 is stellar folks, by the way. I will definitely be making a return trip soon for more rib tips.
My non-alcoholic cocktail as a child was white grape juice and perrier.
Jo, the best part of the sporting year is almost here ... MARCH MADNESS!
Don't be hateful, Jo. We still love you.
Jo - if you go to a Pho restaurant you can order a salty lime (or lemon) soda...rather delicious with a big bowl of steaming and aromatic pho.
Sometimes I think you just go to Bonnaroo for the lime-aid...and the fried olives stuffed with cheese.
Cheese, never. Green peppers, sure. I'll have to look into the whole eggplant/breaded sandwich things. I'll go ask the office matriarch. She'll know. She was a big ricobene's fan.
Re: Brian's -- yeah, I know, Jo. I had a bad experience there once, though. I saw Roger Ebert and he kind of looked like my mom.
Unicorn knows me well. The breaded olives and lime-ade at Bonnaroo are sublime.
I should let the OWFL family know that it appears dipso will be joining me in my annual commute to Manchester, TN for the Bonnaroo Music Festival. If any of the rest of you are interested let us know. Could be a great OWFL excursion.
For more info go here.
due to an abnormally long meeting (where i may have offended people with inappropriate and un-PC statements), i was unable to lunch until 145pm or so...shameful.
i had to run down and get a breadline salad. i love that stuff. i hope i never get sick of it. on busy days like today, breadline is my savior because it takes less than 5 minutes for me to walk in, order, pay, and get back to my desk.
oh contraire uni, zazz is magical. raspberry is good, but black cherry is even better.
unicorn, zazz is good b/c i don't like regular soda pop, and zazz has just enough flavor and fizz to be soda-like and not make your teeth feel as if bathed in pure sugar. i hate that film that coca-cola leaves in your mouth...
unless it is the morning after a heavy night of drinking. then coca-cola is the magical thirst-quencher.
Hmmm...maybe I got a bad batch of zazz or something...I am not a plain seltzer water drinker though, BUT I usually do like the lighter crispness of other flavored bubbly waters...in fact I usually prefer it over any other type of carbonated bevs. Maybe I just should've put vodka in it....
I’ve done a little investigating into the breaded steak sandwich and Ricobene’s. The office matriarch says that she definitely would consider it to be “chicago” food. More specifically, south side food. Even more specifically, Bridgeport food. The original Ricobene’s is @ 250 W. 26th St. There are other breaded steak sandwiches to be found in Chicago, concentrated on the south side. I think the “Italian” preparation (i.e., sauce and mozz) is what makes it chicago. I’ve seen the breaded steak sandwich referred to as a “Kansas City” food, too. Their preparation seems to take on more of a burger-type condiment/relish form, though.
O.M. dismissed the eggplant parm sand as “Chicago” food. Maybe that’s just Ricobene’s. Also, she said that the best thing about Ricobene’s is their fries.
Thanks for the info dippy.
Anytime, Cap'n.
