Some weeks the weekend edition of OWFL is my favorite, while other weeks it never really takes off. I'm getting a feeling this might be a good weekend for the blog. So, what's up kiddies? Are you recovering from hangovers? Recovering from surgery? Looking for a special lunch but not quite sure what it entails? I'm thinking I will be making a trip to the store today and get some fixings for my first attempt at a relish tray.
WFL?

Very hungover and awaiting The Great DC Blizzard of '06 that was supposed to start at dawn.
So far there have been zero snowflakes.
Bought my Bonnaroo tickets at 9:57 AM.
Had an impressive spinach and chicken sausage scramble for breakfast.
Watched the four final Fox episodes of Arrested Development.
Thinking about hitting Giant for some cold cuts and cheese.
La dee da...
Good luck with the relish tray. In my opinion you should have three different cheeses and an assortment of olives. Whole Foods is my relish tray store of choice.
I agree Jade. Its sunny here but cold. Your post inspired me to finally get my personal blog fixed. So I posted freshly and even changed the name of the blog. Although I don't if the title is absolutely approriate.
But I like it.
Cheers all, stay warm.

Blog, sure. WTF. The retards are losing to Purdue by 20...
Bonnaroo!!
I just picked up some chicken sausage myself, Josephus. Amy's breakfast variety. Gonna whip up a skillet. Tobasco will be integral.
Now, is crudite a component of a relish tray, or is it a separate thing altogether.
I don't see crudite as essential for a relish tray. Olives and cheeses are the base. Then add metas and perhaps other pickled items. Crackers, dips, crudite, none of theses are essentials in the jo-tray. I'm not knocking them, but they aren't really my style. Now some good mustard (usually a couple different varieties) often does make it onto the jo-tray.
Semantics, I know, but what I'm hearing sounds more like what I would have called a "deli tray."
Btw, I am hung down, brung down, hung up, and all kinds o' mean nasty ugly things.
I just got up from a nap. Such bliss. I had Ace last night so I got up early this morning, but once his dad picked him up it was straight back to bed. But now I am in a house with no food and it is snowing. I feel the relish tray though and will need to make a trip to Jewel. Whole foods would be ideal, but I need to be able to walk it. I have not yet made a relish tray, but I would think meats would be essential.
Just do it, Jade. Take the long way, as a matter of fact. I have to head out today to return some dvds. Ugh, I don't want to, but I'll make lemonade out of it. I'm not coming back until I get six species of birds. The first four will be gimmes: pidgeon, sparrow, starling, parrot. I'm guessing cardinal, and probably chickadee.
I'm making chili. Wine order was just delivered. I don't care if it snows, I'm all set.
Just came in from outside, after watching the weather forecast. Though they've downgraded their prediction, now claiming we'll get 3-6 inches, I call bullshit. We'll get nothing and like it.
Tell about the chili, HT. I'm putting on my kicks, setting the skillet aside and heading out now. If I eat first, I'll be done. Might parlay this into a load of laundry.
Turkey chili. Three bean. Lots of onion. Peppers - hot, sweet and in between (dad's peppers - jo, I've got about 4 more jars, if you're low). Tomatoes. Pretty basic. One thing I don't use in my chili is chili powder. I think it adds absolutely nothing.
I'll eat with grated pepperjack and ff sour cream.
I want some peppers!
I'll bring some next time I come out to Chicago. They're best served just by themselves on crusty Italian bread. Maybe with a sliver of parm.
I hate waiting for chili to be finished. I'm hungry and it smells so good, but it's not ready yet. Luckily, I have a tasty Bordeaux to keep me occupied.
And, as if to spite me, it is snowing.
I couldn't wait. I got as far as the first sign of bubbles, and then I had to have a bowl. Tasty. Perfect snow day food. Well, it could have been more perfect, but I don't have venison in my freezer.
I'm watching Baz Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet. I love this movie. I still haven't gotten out of my pajamas.
HT - you made me hungry as the Starbuck's pastry shared with the dog did so little earlier.
So I went downstairs and forgot I made steak (for me) and Mahi Mahi (for her) last night. The steak was about 22oz and I cut off most of what was left of the fat (I hate fatty streak) and I put a rosemary, garlic salt, cracked pepper rub on it. I then "butter broiled" it. I stuck it in the oven for ~10 min with butter on the streak (exposed 'cause I like the top crispy). I then put a sprig of fresh rosemay on the top. The Mahi Mahi got the "honey, lime jouce, fresh dill" trick. I just finished up 10oz of the steak just now. Damn that was a good steak.
Which Chateau is the bourdeux from?
I had a nice Austrlian Shiraz with the meal last night. Velvety with lots of black berry and a clean finish. It was nice.
Anyone here belong to a "winebrats" club?
Recently rented that on your rec, Jade. It was excellent. Bill rocks.
"Exile hath more terror in his look, much more than death."
Hope you really felt that way, R.C. Dumb kid.
I rented a French movie, "Diva," which I'm expecting to be very very good. Also "Broken Flowers."
Oh, and I got 10! In order of appearance: Sparrow, Starling, Pigeon, Parrot, Crow, Chicakadee, Greater Scaup, Gull, Canada Goose, Mallard, and Mourning Dove.
HT, I just can't agree. I think the payoff for waiting for a long cooked chili is so worth it. But, potahtos.
For some reason, I have an aversion to rosemary on beef. Love it on pork, lamb, poultry...but I just won't do it on steak.
Aussie Shiraz seems such a safe bet. I rarely miss with that and usually find myself impressed for the price (which is quite low).
I don't do wine really, though. I like it, but I have no idea why. Maybe someday.
Beer, however, I try to do. I indeed did get a Fat Tire last night. Went to Smoke Daddy, but no room, so I popped over to the Gold Star, and they had it too. EVERYONE was drinking it. It was pretty geeky, really. Disappointing: decent nose, but weak flavor (missed the "sour" and "butterscotch") and so weak on body/mouth feel. Nothing like the real Belgians they're trying to knock off. They can go back to the other side of the mighty miss. Someone also told me that they were bought a couple years back by Anheiser Busch, and that a corresponding drop in quality came along.
I love fatty steaks.
Just got back from Gigante.
I bought th egoods for both a relish AND a deli tray.
Just discovered that I have a case of corona on the deck. I think I'm going to drink alot at home tonight.
It's snowing.
"I do protest I never injured thee, but love thee better than thou cans't devise. till thou shall know the reason of my love. And so good Capulet who's name I tender as dearly as mine own, Be satisfied. Be satisfied."
Dipso, I am so glad you watched it. I think it is a brilliant rendition of one of the all time classics, even if it did get slaughtered in the press. It has some great music in it, including a Radiohead song that is only on the soundtrack called Talk Show Host. I think Shakespeare would approve and feel confident saying that if he were alive today would love Radiohead as much as I do.
Jo, you just quoted one of my favorite parts of R + J. The "be satisfied. Be satisifed." gives me chills. It's one of those times we've all had in life when you just want to grab someone by their soul and say, "listen motherfucker, there is more to this then you know. Chill the fuck out." But of course, Bill says it more eloquently and is the master of the english language and I just write a blog. But, "I am fortunes fool." is still my favorite line of the play.
I forgot to say that I am something of a wine afficiando myself. I love Australian Shiraz in particular, as well. But just about any bold, big red wine will do. I like the wine to be rich and deep and explosive in flavor. Although, I do get a craving for white wine from time to time. Wine is definitely my favorite of all adult beverages, and I have reoccuring fantasies of saying fuck it all to the US and life as I know it, and heading to Australia to make wine.
Diz, the Bordeaux is Chateau Lemoine-Lafon-Rochet, courtesy of LaChoi, as she assembled the six-pack that was delivered earlier today.
I know I should have waited, but I just couldn't. It's not my style. I'm an instant gratification girl through and through.
Love the Romeo & Juliet. I've spent this weekend so far bonding with Elizabethtown. Great movie. No Almost Famous, but a really great effort. No matter that I want to do invasive dental surgery on Kirsten Dunst, sans anestetic, everytime her fucked up grill is onscreen.
And, I'm with Jo on the fatty steak. The fat brings the flavor. Nothing better than a Pittsburgh-style ribeye, with a side of potatoes - french fried, baked, or mashed - maybe even tater tots.
I'm thinking of putting a fire on. I'm in my pjs (gracias, Jada - they've been washed and worn thrice already) and watching Inked. Jo - I tried to read 1,000 Bullets, but I can't get into it. I think The Last Man ruined me, though, I'm hoping to borrow your Sin City collection next time I see you.
Radishes, Jo? Tell me you got radishes. Even if you didn't.
I'm not drinking AT ALL tonight...in public. There is, however, a big ass bottle of cutty sark staring at me.
I just took a shower and was thinking more about the rosemary and steak thing. In fact, my aversion extends to all herbs and steak. I did a little self-regression while the conditioner was doing its thing, and I think I pinpointed the experience that's behind it all. While in high school...maybe 15, 16, when I was just starting to hone my culinary skills, I tried seasoning a steak with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. I though Paul was giving me a recipe. Horrible. I think I overdid the sage, to tell the truth. That's it, though, I think. No more herbs and steak. Spices, sure. Herbs, no. Should I let this go or is it worth working on?
Anonymity transgression! Phew. I hated being the last one with that mark.
I thought about E-town. I could use a Kiki fix.
It's OK, I'm not anonymous.
Sage is one of the most lethal of all herbs, and in my opinion, should only ever be added to fowl. In fact, when preparing things like wild mule deer or elk, the diets of both of which include copious amounts of sage, you must soak the meat in milk to diminish that trademark sage flavor. I get the chills just thinking of it.
That said, my mom's stuffing recipe includes all four of the Simon & Garfunkel herbs. Sage is fowl only. Remember that for happy herbing.
The happiest herbing involves smoking your herbs. I agree though with sage and fowl only.
Sorry - I can delete if you'd like, Jade.
A novel idea, Jade.
Uno...
momento...
No radishes.
The whole Mercutio death and the subsequent Tybalt death scenes are amazing. Another favorite line of mine is when the kids from Swimfan and Hackers yells at Romeo to "Stand not amazed!" He sounds so fucking funny.
HT and I are of one mind with the fatty steaks. i actually have no desire to ever eat filets. They don't do it for me at all.
100 Bullets is the hottest comic out now, but I thought it might be a bit much for you. Y: The Last Man is the one I was sure you'd be into. I have the next 5 books of that series for you if you want them. It's the only one that the missus likes. Three Sin City books are in my bag waiting for thou to keep them company.
Jade where are you in Watchmen? I was thinking back and rememebered the first time I read it was in 7th grade. Blew my mind. Hater/Cuddles is a big fan.
Bonnaroo Dipso, Bonnaroo...come on ladies!
By the way I just had an amazing sandwich.
Soft sub roll
sandwich spead on the bread (think thousand island dressing)
honey ham
honey turkey
garlic swiss
pastrami
sopressatta
provolone
lettuce
tomato
onion
avocado
mayo
HT's Dad's peppers
hot giardineira
sweet & spicy mustard
I laid it out hoagie style.
Heaven.
Did you buy all those components today? Ok, how much did that sandwich cost?
I don't think Bonnaroo is in the cards this year - as usual. I have a wedding in Hawaii a month later.
I'm determined to finish the Bullets one, but I don't like it. I also have a book from my favorite pulp writer - Tim Dorsey - to finish, as well as a few other, more respectable titles. We'll see if I get to the Texas preacher one. But, I like the Last Man. And, I've been promised some loaner Watchmen too, but I want the Sin City first.
Are we doing brunch or something like it in Silver Spring tomorrow?
Bought all the componets except the avocado today. There is enough left for at least 6 or 7 more sammies.
I'm almost done with Watchmen, but I don't want it to be over. I am more in love with Dr. Manhattan than ever.
I think Romeo + Juliet has the best supporting cast of characters of any of his plays. Mercutio, Tybalt, Nurse and Father Lawrence all rule.
My favorite line of any of his plays though is "Now is the winter of our discontent." Best opening line ever.
Nice sandwich except for the "sandwich spread." Blech.
This was the first time I've used sandwich spread. I was pleased.
Hve you used vegimite, Jo?
no vegomite sandwiches.
We only got a little bit of snow and it didn't stick.
I also have to agree about fatty steaks. I will even eat some of the fat if it has crispy edges. I don't really like herbs on my steak, either. Unless it is tarragon in a bernaise sauce.
I didn't know radiohead was going to be at bonaroo. I want to go SO BAD now, but I can't afford it.
Something about butter and Rosemary with garlic. It works on potatoes for me and as long as you age the sirlion, and have a salt rub on it, the combo totally works.
I'm jealous about the wine. Jade, did ya'll get the snow?
Start saving for the OWFL Bonnaroo Convention!
I heard a rumor that you will be procuring a RV for Bonnaroo. Care to confirm or deny?
Bad hangover today, by the way. HaterTot and I consumed a lot of wine while IM'ing each other last night. Does that still count as drinking alone?
I thought I was drinking with HT last night. Odd.
I'm a brilliant multi-tasker.
No hangover. Watching Nancy Drew on ABC Family. Going to Target later with LaChoi.
The Bonnaroo RV rumore is groundless. If there are enough takers it is more likely that a van will be rented.
My god, I love lunch. I stopped at BoJono's on the way home from Walgreens [where I spent an absurd amount of money buying lip balm and clean supplies and junk] and got a huge Italian sub and a giant coke. I feel soooooo much better. Now I need a good shower because I am sure I smell offensive.
I want to go to Target. They have the cutest cotton panties for sleeping in.
I have to buy cheap, utilitarian sports bra type things there. And shampoo and conditioner. I love me some Target. I might buy some other cute things there, just because I can and they're cheap little indulgences. (which always add up to over $100)
I ate too much chili for lunch. Blecch. I want fountain diet coke.
How about some water, HT? You need it always, but especially when healing. I won't give up on this point.
If water tasted as yummy as fountain diet coke, then I would drink it by the bucket. I've been trying to choke down a glass whenever I eat though. But, it almost ruins food for me. I'm trying though.
i just choked down a banana and a glass of water
i have a bit of a "Waco Kid" syndrome going on
Maybe I'll have half a vitamin.
Waco Kid syndrome? I am totally clueless on that one.
Today I ate:
- Hummos (hummus?) & pita
- blue icing
- Mixed nuts
- Champagne ("shamPAGnee")
I'm hooongry
Jim. But his friends just call him..."Jim." Food makes him sick.
And Sugar makes a rare appearance at a stealthy time, spending her Sunday evening drinking Champers. Very Nice. I approve whole-heartedly.
