popping my WFL cherry

even though i've been a WFL commenter for months now, this is officially my first post...yippee! did i mention how honored i am to be now a part of the exec committee? i hope that i can live up to the expectations of my peers and contribute worthy lunch posts.

as i sit eating a "fat kid alternative" of the "fat kid special" (the "fks" is sausage, egg & cheese on a croissant. a "fka" is just egg & cheese hold the sausage on a croissant) i am contemplating the meaning of lunch. it's an existential question, really. i started thinking, what can i do this week to dedicate myself to lunch and feel as if i'm making a difference in the world of lunch?

i've decided to go theme and dedicate myself to asian foods this week. that's right, it's an hommage of sorts. yesterday was korean and now i'm wondering what wonderful goodies to scoop up today: indian? thai? japanese? vietnamese? (though i'm protesting some japanese foods due to a ny times article i read dissing my peeps.) so many choices; what's a WFLer to do?

so, yes, i would love some suggestions for today in the asian genre. so kids, WFL?

This must have been like Christmas morning for you. Could you sleep last night, La Choi?

I'll kick around the asian food thing for awhile. And maybe MAYBE I'll get to the point where I am able to tell you all what I did in the kitchen last night. I don't know exactly what it is...but there's a lot of it.

Anyway...La Choi!!!

Hip! Hip!

Happy broken cherry la choi!

I just realized that I didn't hava a formal lunch yesterday. There was a hoiliday themed lunch reception in my building's lobby and I made a plate of assorted snacks. Today I am famished and I think I will hit Soho for some gourmet buffet action.

Rest assured the Asian food will be represented.

i really think i'm going to get down with some indian cuisine this afternoon. by the end of this week, garlic will be dripping from my pores.

Every morning I think about making my instant oatmeal with coffee instead of water. Do you guys want to know if…well, let’s face it…WHEN that happens, or should I keep this one to myself?

The DC WFL contigent should arrange a lunch trip to the Indian Buffet on L at 17th st. It recently became infamous when a patron was stabbed to death. But it's reaaalllllly good.

coffee + oatmeal = evacuation. i repeat, coffee + oatmeal = evacuation. my only guess is that coffee in oatmeal will not only = evacuation, but a seriously funky taste in one's mouth.

yes, i would like to know dipso, if this is indeed a worthy time saver in the realm of breakfast. and since what you eat for breakfast does have an affect on how you will feel later for lunch, it is relevant.

LaChoi took me for Korean take out last night, and I must say it was delish! Bul gogi, bi bim bop and ample kim chi - all tasty! Sadly, the evening took a turn when I accidently crushed a little, cute, itty bitty baby mouse's spine with the corner of LaChoi's suitcase...

For lunch - I'm not sure. I just ate a doughnut, which wasn't especially enjoyable. I also seem to have a bit of a sore throat, so I'm on cup number two of tea this morning. I'm hungry, but I'm not sure what I want... Maybe soup and a salad.

Dipso, I'm interested in this coffee oatmeal, and expect a full report. I don't think it's something I'd be interested in emulating, but I'm interested nonetheless.

I agree with Jo, by the way. The Ascot is awesome, even if it looks like a "gentleman's club". We should hook up a trip there.

Unknown said...

let's hook up indian today! the ascot looks like a gentleman's club? i'm soooo there...

HaterTot said...

Today? Hmmm... I'm not actually feeling Indian today. I think later in the week - maybe a Friday lunch?

Josephus said...

Friday Indian Buffet at the stabbing joint.

Unknown said...

friday it is. then, where should i go today? i'm not sure about another buffet run, though soho has mongolian bbq, right?

I'm sorry kids, but I don't do Indian food. I have tried it on numerous occassions and grew up with some very, very dear Indian friends, but the food just leaves me cold. Just about the only cuisine that I reject as a whole.

But all this talk about Asian food has left me with a hankering for some Vietnamese food. I could have gotten behind that. I live a few blocks from the Little Saigon neigborhood in Chicago. One place I especially love serves GIANT bowls of Phao for like 4 bucks. Way too far for a lunch trip, but I just might have to wander over there for dinner this week. Even Ace likes it.

Dipso, instant oatmeal is for sissies. You have to cook it up for real on the stove top. It takes like 5 minutes and elevates the oatmeal to a whole new level. I add dried cherries and walnuts to mine, and then sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar on top and pour on 1% milk. Keeps me warm and cozy all day.

I don't know what to eat for lunch. But it won't be Indian food like you fools.

mmm, pho is so good. once at this club in boston, my presence was requested by this dude who's family owned all the "pho pasteur" chain restaurants in the city. he sent a friend over to call on me. it was totally creepy.

jade, as much as i like you, i CANNOT believe you don't like indian food! blasphemous! well, at least you've tried it several times, so you legitimately can say you don't like it. i hate it when people try something once and say "i don't like this!" it's like, hello? perhaps it was how it was prepared. ethics and i had this very discussion regarding liver. foie gras -- excellent. pan friend liver and onions -- not so excellent.

oh, and your oatmeal sounds sooooo good. i am going to try that sometime with dried cranberries since they are my favorite.

Josephus has just been told he will be in Chicago for work on 12/19 - 12/21.
Probably can't do lunch, but a WFL drinking excursion needs to be arranged.

HaterTot said...

Update: I hate everyone. Why are people so annoying?

(except WFLers, of course)

The Doctor said...

I don’t love Indian across the board, but there are some dishes that are right near the top for me. Just for that sissy comment, I’m nominating Gaylord India on Clark St. A trip to Devon (way north Chicago) during the conference is probably a tall order.

As would be a trip to Hyde Park (way south – my hood), I suppose, but this is one of the jewels down there.

http://centerstage.net/restaurants/rajun-cajun.html

One reason I think people are annoying is because they get in the way. That's a big one for me.

Jada said...

Jo, why can't you ever tack a weekend onto your Chicago plans? I don't do weekday drinking excursions, but I just might have to make an exception this time and arrange for a sitter.

I appreciate Ms. La Choi's forgiveness of my lack of appreciation for the cuisine of India. But I also must say I don't like liver in any form. Foie gras or pan fried, I can't do it. I think it probably has more to do with my extensive knowledge of the biological function of the liver more than the taste, but I gotta say the taste doesn't exactly ring my bell. Organ meats in general I find somewhat revolting.

The Doctor said...

Ok, Commander – you’ve sent me off on a hate tangent.

Overheard by co-worker passers by:

“My favorite flavors are green and yellow.”

People! How did we get here?

Hate and wonderment.
Tofu and oregano.

Jada said...

Don't be haters people. It's so beneath you. Let's all just hug and get along. And if that doesn't work, let's go get drunk.

Unknown said...

ew on the subway. though if you must, stick to the asian theme with the chicken terriaki sandwich. ew, the smell of rising subway bread...d-scust-ting!

i suddenly got a craving for pad thai, so i ordered some from cafe asia along with some summer rolls. they said it will be ready in "10 to 15" minutes. but from my experience, EVERY asian restaurant (especially chinese food) always says they'll be ready in 10 minutes. what is up with that? i mean they usually are, which is so strange.

also, i had to look at cafe asia's menu on their website, which has this bad techno music, and there is no option to turn it off. that is so obnoxious.

yes, ethics crushed a baby mouse on my floor last night. it was a total accident though in her defense. besides my kitty would've killed it in a slow and painful way, so really, ethics did it a favor. it was the size of my thumb...

HaterTot said...

Yes, people do, in one way or another, just get in the way. I feel that they're always impeding my progress in one way or another, and I find other people, on the whole, to be inefficient. Of course, I've been dealing with Dr.'s, hospitals, and insurance company's for the last hour, so I'm especially sensitive to idiocy and inefficiency. WHY THE FUCK CAN THEY NOT ALL JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER??? WHY DO I HAVE TO MAKE 3,000 CALLS WHEN THEY ARE IN THE SAME DAMN BUILDING?? I'M THE PATIENT, DAMMIT!!

Okay, done with that. So, back to more interesting topics. I'd like to address Dipso's run in with folks who are identifying flavors with colors. I should admit, that I do this. My favorite flavor is red. There, I've said it. Now, this has fucked me in the past, of course when I foolishly assumed that red=cherry, when in fact, in that particular case, red=cinnamon, but 90% of the time, I can safely say that red is my favorite flavor. Red candy, red popsicles, red koolaid, red mad dog, red jello (okay, bad example: I love red jello, but prefer peach, which of course is not only a color, but also the legitimate flavor), and on and on. And, it doesn't matter to me if red is cherry, strawberry, raspberry or something else, (unless it's cinnamon) it's almost always my favorite.

I'm afraid dipso's going to hate me now. If I order something in the red flavor at the conference, are you going to publicly flog me?

Jo always goes to Chicago during the week, with little to no notice. Even though I explain to him that I need more time than that to coordinate my "accomodations" and arrange to fly out to meet him for an evening of drinking. Ah, well. Soon enough.

On the topic of pate/foie gras, I must say I can't get enough. I'm a decadent little bitch, I guess. It's just so damn yummy. I could live on a diet of champagne, foie gras and cupcakes. Wow. That would be a magical life.

I am very discombobulated right now. I haven't eaten yet, and my day's all askew. Too much time on the phone talking about annoying things.

I love liver.
Red Pop is a Michigan legend.

Chicago WFLers WILL be drinking on Monday or Tuesday night.

la choi I just ate a piece of kalbee in your honor.

Jada said...

I used to wait tables at Coral Gables in East Lansing, MI and we had Red Pop AND Vernor's available as fountain drinks. If that isn't classic Michigan I don't know what is. I think Vernor's is the all time greatest pop in the world.

Josephus said...

I drank four cans of Vernor's last night. Thanks again to Ethics for alerting me that my local Giant was stocking it.

Josephus said...

Rico, Jade, Dipso, Spoilsport (anyone else?) reserve Tuesday night for drinks. Pick a bar.

Unknown said...

holy crap! when they told me that the pad thai was average in size, i didn't think that it was going to be behemouth! this is definitely a 2 part eater. pad thai for 2 days in a row? no complaints here.

yes, medical care is incompetent. no organization. i didn't understand this growing up b/c my mom's a nurse and always knew the drs personally that i went to see. i never feared them as much as i do now. especially when they put their fingers up my bunghole without warning...at least buy me a drink before, will ya?

kalbi rules. but what's even better is kalbi chim where they take the short ribs and stew them in their own broth for hours to wear the meat fall off the bone. my mom makes her kalbi chim marinade with ground up asian pears mixed in...it's the perfect balance of salt with just a slight hint of sweet. it is abso-fucking-lutely amazing.

Tuesday 12/20 wherever in the city.

I wrote a post about how much I like orange, but it's not here.

I really do, though. Jelly beans, sweaters, tea.

Jada said...

Is Big K from Krogers?

I have to agree with Madame Presidente on Red. Especially when proceeded by the word "Marlboro"

Jada said...

I don't care what bar, but I prefer Northside to Southside. And I don't pay cover. Ever.

Josephus said...

"Oh and soes anyone remember Big K how about that for a michigan drink."

What Rico?

HaterTot said...

We had RedPop and Vernor's in Pittsburgh, too. And Cherokee Red, which was like RedPop, but had a big native american chief picture on the can.

But I need to know - did anyone else have Tom Tucker Mint Ginger Ale growing up? I've never seen this anywhere but Pittsburgh, and even there, I notice a lot of people don't know about it.

It is magical elixir. I love that stuff.

HaterTot said...

I admit to enjoying an IC Light from time to time. Not so much the Iron Shitty though. I also used to drink those IC twists in college. (IC Light flavored with lime (green flavored) and cherry (red flavored - and obviously the better of the two).

The Doctor said...

The season’s first drum of Garrett’s cheese and caramel has been sighted in the main office kitchen.

Vernor's was more East Michigan, I think. Never had an affinity, myself. Chidig's Old Towne G-Ale rocks.

HaterTot said...

I know you've all been waiting with baited to breath to hear what I'd come back with from Au Bon Pain!

Today I tried the steak/cranberry/mandarin orange/gorgonzola salad for the first time - and it was FANTASTIC. I'm super impressed. Which makes up for the fact that I also got the "Italian wedding soup" that has tomatoes in it, when everyone knows real Italian wedding soup does not have tomatoes. While it's not bad, and I recognized the tomato flaw before I purchased it, it only inspires me to whip up a batch of my mom's recipe.

As I recall, doesn't Rock 'n Rye taste pretty much exactly the same as Vernor's??

Unknown said...

i only know that i've only had vernors, which is awesome. anyone from the west coast? ever have cactus cooler? that shit was the bomb diggity.

Jada said...

Rock 'n Rye isn't at all like Vernor's. I love Rock 'n Rye, although Vernon's is still the unequivocal champion of all pop. I am also fond of Tahitian Treat.

I was waiting and waiting and waiting for one of my dip shit agents to come back and bring me Chipotle, but he decided to take the rest of the afternoon off, so I was forced to go procure lunch on my own. I went to the Chicago Bagel Authority and got The Ravenswood sub: roast beef, smoked cheddar, horseradish, lettuce, tomato. And they steam their sandwiches which kind of a nice change of pace. No pop for me, even though all this pop talk is making me homesick.

Josephus said...

BLT and provolone with a deviled egg was my lunch (one piece of kalbi as well).

I will drink 3 more Vernor's tonight...

HaterTot said...

Hmmm... I'll have to do a compare and contrast test when I go home. All I remember is that I didn't like Vernors and I didn't like Rock n' Rye, so maybe that just led me to draw the conclusion that they tasted the same? I can't be sure.

But I do know that they all pale in comparison to my delicious Tom Tucker Mint Ginger Ale.

Josephus said...

Spoilsport did you put Tuesday night on your schedule?

Jada said...

Rock n' Rye is more fruity and syrupy and I don't know how to describe it exactly but it's not gingerale-esque, Vernor's is the ultimate gingerale with a kick. It is also the miracle cure for upset tummies.

I think Dipso need's to bring me the popcorn mix, and maybe send a sampling to Miss ethics so she knows what she's missing out on.

HaterTot said...

I expect a drunken phone call from you people on Tuesday night. I am sad that I can not join you, but alas, I am poor.

I will drink left over Boone's Farm alone on my couch and be with you all in spirit.

HaterTot said...

My dad used to have a kegerator when I was a little kid and it was alternately filled with Iron Shitty or Genessee. He got rid of it when I entered Jr. High, as he was apparently quite the wise sage and realized I was on my way to a long and storied drinking career.

But what, pray tell, is Moxie? It sounds like a dare.

HaterTot said...

What the hell is Big K?

HaterTot said...

Who calls you Big K? Is that what you told Oprah your name was when you were dancing for her?

HaterTot said...

I'd like to use this opportunity to be the 61st commenter and say thanks to Jo for my Merry Birthday present, which arrived today. I do wonder though if he's aware that he sent me what amounts to a book of soft core pornography photos. But I do LOVE it - so THANK YOU, JO!

Josephus said...

I did not know that...you're welcome ethics.
