not a WFL-er was stirring, because NO ONE IS FUCKING WORKING TODAY!!!!! (except for ricotubbs and me, of course) the last few days before xmas really do blow for those of us who have sedentary office jobs. it's such a sham, b/c no one really works this time of year, and it's all about just having warm bodies around to look as if you are working. my office, for example, is concerned about having proper "office coverage" in the next week. seriously folks, NO ONE IS GOING TO CALL US! i promise that there will be no life threatening ethics issue between now and the new year. just close the office already.
it's not even 10am, and i am constantly look at the clock and wonder when the day is going to end. the only thing to look forward to is...
LUNCH! (of course)
i woke up this morning and thought "what sort of thought provoking subject can i post today?" and all i can think of is this...sorry all.
so, are any DC WFL-ers working today? and if so, can we convene for lunch? i think this is the only time of the year where you can get away with taking a 2 hour+ long lunch since no one in the office really knows if you're working or on vacation anyways. dammit, give me SOMETHING to look forward to, por favor!!!
WFL? inspire me folks.

actually, the gift is for moi! (isn't it? if so, i want either an ipod and/or digicam, please!) my phone hasn't rung even once. and for lunch, i cannot figure out what would be good. i don't want a sandwich, i don't want asian, i don't want mexican...so what does that leave me?
I went out with work people after our office party. Not a good idea. I am very very hungry. I think I may have a pre lunch blt with cheese on wheat toast. Maybe a BALT from Cap Grounds? mmm... Koons Ford is trying hard not to earn their redemption, we'll know within the hour.
ARGH! I just checked my bank account, and I am overdrawn by quite a bit; forgot about those pesky automatic bill pay things I set up. Thank God we get paid tomorrow and I don't have very many presents to buy.
That does put a serious damper on my lunch possibilities though. Time to go see what I can scavenge in the kitchen.
Don't look at me ethics...your account with me is overdrawn as well.
i know how you feel ethics. finances are not my strong suit by any means. i was overdrawn this week too. this is why i have a second job.
again, no confirmation whether the remaining DC WFLers want to eat lunch together today...perhaps it's because it's only jo and me.
ahh lunch. I have an office invitation here in china town. However, are DC WFL'ers gonna do it for lunch today, and where, oh where could it be?
p.s. i want to take a 2 hour lunch
what's good in your neck of the woods la choi and Jo? I want to take a metro ride somewhere
Yes, Jo - and for that I am grateful, and you know I'm good for it!
BAGEL!!!
Not exactly WFL, but I had my usual Asiago cheese bagel with the lowfat cream cheese ... this in spite of 2 brand new crowns and one root canal a meer day before. I want someone to acknowledge my pain tolerance now :)
The "Holiday Coffee" flavor at Einstein's is particularly nice (I'm not a flavored coffee fan) because it seems to contain only a "Wassailly" flavor (I know I butchered that word).
So I am doing the yuppie shake before Rochelle and I set sail on a 10 day cruise. I am whitening my teeth and tanning [SEG] (shit eating grin).
So WFL?
CORRECTION: madame presidente is in the office today. i thought she was heading to the 'burgh already. but she's here...whoo hoo! let's narrow down folks: chinatown or downtown lunch?
I couldn't be happier to be at work. I might come in on X-mas morning!
I'm hitting a burrito place today to see if I can gain any insight into the mind of ricotubbs.
I'm off to Cap Grounds
I don't mind travelling your way, so downtown perhaps?
Ascot?
what else is over there?
I'm at work today, too. And will be tomorrow untila bout 12:00. I hate my tenants sometime, and to day is one of them. They all want to come in and sign bullshit I have been harrasing them about for weeks or have someone come out tho their place [to do meaningless shit they should be able to do for themselves like change lightbulbs or the batteries in their smoke detectors] on Friday or Monday because they have the day off. When I tell them we have the day off as well they get indignant. This is why I hate Trixies/Chads.
I'm not stressing though about it. I just had a delicious cream cheese and bacon sanwich on a sesame bagel from CBA. It was yummy. I looked for La Choi's infamous FKS, but I couldn't find the egg section of the monstrous menu board and I had to get out of there.
I wish I was going to EL for the weekend.
james, 10 day cruise??? you bitch! ;-) i'm jealous.
i am going to cali though, so it will be ok. too bad my mom lives in BFE by a fake lake with a fake lighthouse. ho ho ho!
since i'm being a bit finicky about lunch, perhaps we can go to soho b/c there's variety??? thoughts?
Belize baby! Yeah we iza goin to get our thang on in the islands! :)
SCREW WINTER!
Jade, it'll be high school reunion week in EL. Fun at the bar for about 15 minutes and then excruciatingly depressing.
ethics has the best lunch idea i've heard in a while....
LaChoi has volunteered to be my loan shark today, so with that, I am in.
I was thinking burgers at... Ollie's Trolley?
wow...does Ollie's have oliveburgers?
that sounds cool, always wanted to go that place. Ollie's.
By the FBI HQ right?
ollie's has several locations. the one i know of is dinky and on L street and vermont, NW. but i'm sure there are others that are bigger and more convenient. i love their fries with old bay...mmmm mmmm mmmm!
i wanna go to belize. :(
I wish we could take you with us La Choi.
So, is it Gut Buster (TM)hamburger day or is it yummy Chinese dumpling day?
What sounds better WFL(ers)?
I was thinking the one on E, across from ESPN zone. It seemed central-est. But I'm pretty easy.
It's definitely a burger day. There is zero question.
I'm down for the E Street Ollie's Trolleys. WHat time?
Say Noon? 12:30?
TIme to rock the burger james, get started on that holiday eatin' today
Siiiiigh. I wish I could go to lunch today. However, how many DC WFLers are around next week? There aren't supposed to be a lot of people in my office, so I could probably sneak away for a 2 hour lunch! Who's with me?? Have Metro card, will travel.
Jo why is Koons (or as I like to call them Koos) screwing you? I hate car dealers.
God, I'm hungry. I should get a salad. Or maybe I'll hit the rice bowl shop nearby & get their chicken with peanut sauce. Mmmm. Even though their chicken is usually overcooked, the peanut sauce is *goooood*. And the rice is that short-grained sticky rice - like sushi rice. Yum. Yep, I've talked myself into it.
12:30. I think Jo's just now getting lunch #1 at Cap Grounds.
The E Street location of Ollie's is where, when I was extraordinarily intoxicated on my 29th birthday, I HAD TO HAVE this fat, sweaty guy's t-shirt that read, "I spent the night in Paris... Want to see the video." (it had just leaked) My loving friends negotiated a deal where they bought the shirt of his back for the low price of a replacement t-shirt, purchased next door in the gift shop of the Hotel Harrington. (I believe it said Airforce One Crew) I still sleep in that t-shirt.
LT - we need to get together, soon. Though, it's looking like I'm going to be in the 'burgh longer than expected, to accomodate an after-Christmas Christmas thing at my Godparent's house. I think I'm back on the 30th, unless I can't get a Dr.'s appt. changed, in which case I'll be back on the 29th. We should discuss New Year's plans, off-blog.
Come to Ollies!
Koon's has atoned for their earlier sins and will get my money. Courtesy Ford in Michigan has lost out on a sparkling check from my credit union (by the way credit unions rock). I don't think I can do Ollie's today. My mind is racing with x-mas gifts, new cars, actual work and the fear that I am missing something extremely important. Taking off from the office for an hour will only compound the mistakes I am sure to make.
By the way ethics, the city of Chicago just called me and told me to implore you not to have the surgery.
lizturtle -- screw the rice bowl. ollie's is where it's at. i think that the old bay fries are calling your name (lliiiizzzzz, oh lliiiiizzzz! eat me!)
The whole city? That's pretty compelling, but I'm telling you - no one is going to be disappointed with the result.
I can't believe you're going to skip Ollie's! But I hear ya - car buying is a bitch. Pimpy ride, Jo. Very nice.
THat's crazy talk Jo, you should go to Ollie's. You can do some christmas shopping right in that area while you're at.
and as for real work...
pulllleeezze
If they had an olive burger I'd go.
La Choi, I hear that refrain all the time. "Eat me!!" Yep, just another Friday night. Sigh. Really want to come to Ollie's, but none of the important people in my office are out this week. Dagnabbit. And my tummy's starting to growl. :-(
We get out at 2 tomorrow! I'm so excited. The little things give me so much joy these days...
i can make your burger into an olive burger if you come jo.
See you WFL'ers at Ollies at 12:30.
Can't do it.
I apologize, believe me I do.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY BOBBY BROWN'S 'EVERY LITTLE STEP I TAKE' IS GOING THROUGH MY HEAD??? MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!
that's a good song, even though he is an insane man. i'm sorry that you are plagued with bobby's music. at least it isn't xmas carols though...those will kill you with goddam xmas cheer.
I have bought zero of my holiday presents. I leave for Michigan tomorrow. I am supposed to be cooking Chrismukah Eve dinner for the family [I'm the foodie of the family, surprise surprise] and I haven't figured out my menu yet. I want to say fuck it all and go back to bed.
I need to eat lunch. I have no ideas.
Jade here is a menu a friend of mine has prepared for her holiday festivities:
"Christmas Eve Brunch: blueberry french toast casserole, egg/sausage casserole, hash browns
Christmas Eve Dinner: homemade caesar salad; prime rib encrusted with horseradish, garlic, rosemary, thyme; honeyed carrots with cranberries; mix of mushrooms in cream and cabernet; baked tatos; coconut creme brulee in christmas tree-shaped ramekins.
Christmas Morning: belgian waffles with eggnog butter and orange syrup and farm fresh link pork sausage
Christmas night: left over prime rib with gruyere fondue, apples, pears and mushrooms. Coconut creme brulee.
Hot, spiced cider to sip on throughout the days."
Forget joining my family, I'm heading off to your friends, Jo.
I love how Bobby Brown has to introduce himself as "...you know, Whitney Houston's husband" these days.
Pre-lunch today: Christmas M&M's (peanut)
Thinking about a Gargantuan from Jimmy John's.
lunch at ollie's was fantabulous! ethics, watchdog and i all dined on bacon cheesey burgers and ollie's fine old bay spiced fries. tre magnifique.
afterwards, we headed to harry's for a pitcher of beer. i think i can now deal with the rest of my afternoon here at the office much better now that i'm a little buzzed.
I know nothing of Jimmy John's. But I went to their website and found that there is one down near Pitt. I may need to check it out when I'm home, so I can see what yinz is talking about. Of course, that will cut into my Primanti's time...
LaChoi summed it up quite well, as the three of us ate the exact same lunch. A pleasant surprise: the burgers came with A LOT of mayo - on both buns - so it's not wonder the guy behind the counter looked at me a bit askew when I asked for some more. It didn't go to waste though, as it provided the perfect accompaniment for the Old Bay fries.
Jo, who is this friend, and where do they live? I have no idea what's on our holiday menu... whatever I buy tomorrow, I guess. I'm thinking steak and lobster?
Went to the largely asian buffet over there in that building. Chicken and broccoli and pepper steak. Um, it was fine.
Internet's been down here. Email too. I don't feel an ounce of humor or charm in myself right now. Abort blog!
Hey, I'm a little shy of coming out and saying it, but it rhymes with "Guy glove shoe," everybody!
I am a card carrying Jimmy John's "Frequent Freaker". For a chain sub sandwich joint they're second only to Potbelly in my not so humble opinion.
It's all about the bread. And the Salt & Vinegar chips.
My Dove Glue, too, Lester!
I'm going to be without internet (I think, unless I can figure something out) for the next 5 or so days, so if I don't get a chance to say it, everyone have a safe and tolerable holiday. I expect much blogging about roast beast, sugar plums and whatever else everyone eats!
Hm. There is a large hole in that menu, Jo. I see no mention of any wine, beer, liquor or any variation thereof. Unless you mistyped & meant 'hot, spiked cider' . . . .
I can vouch for Jimmy John's. mm mm good.
I am trying to get my old friend, we'll call her "Jack" for now, involved in WFL.
But she's shy. And she's a bit moody.
That was "Jack's" holiday menu.
I finished my holiday shopping in one fell swoop at Border's. Everyone is getting books from me this year. I am OK with it, it will feed their minds. Then I stopped at Robinsons and got the rib tips lunch special with fries and a coke for $4. Not as good as Fat Willy's by any stretch of the imagination but for four bones it is very respectable. Of course I feel like I weigh 200 pounds now.
Some hot spiked cider would help that.
Er, the hot spiked cider would help the shyness & moodiness of 'Jack'. It might help with your bloat, too, Jade!
Jimmy Johns in the 'burgh is really close to the O, though. That'll be a tough choice. If I'm solo though, it will be less tough, b/c the portions at the O aren't really for a single person.
Lunch with ethics and la choi was indeed tasty, and the pitcher of beer was just what the doctor ordered. Now I just have to kill a little time and head home.
Incidentally, I finished my christmas shopping post WFL lunch meeting. Books and sports stuff for all!
p.s. Jimmy John's I like, it good
I like Jimmy John's a lot. Not love, but I do really like it. The one near my office is insanely fast with delivery.
Has any one seen King Kong? Ace is begging me to take him to see it, but I don't know if it's too scary for him. I know no one besides me has kids [I think] but does any one have any insight? He's 5, by the way.
Watchdog, I think you work with my best friend. We should discuss off the board.
jade, you need to try Honey 1 BBQ. I know it's on the edge of "Bucker Park", but their ribs are TIGHT. Or as I like to say, tighter than a chrome lugnut still in the wrapper.
It's on Western Ave between Fullerton and Armitage. East side of the street.
My Northside Rib Rankings:
1) Honey 1
2) Robinson's
3) Fat Willy's
4) Smoke Daddy
Damn I'm hungry.
Bah, how could I forget Twin Anchors? That might have to be 1B with Honey 1.
Brian, you put Robinson's above Fat Willy's? That shocks me. I'll venture to the west side for good ribs.
You Chicago people have better food, too. Why is your city so damn cold, though?????? Better bars, better food, but the weather is an overwhelming impediment.
Actually, I am being unfair to bars in DC. There are a few standouts, but it's not the same kind of drinkin' town as Chicago.
And this is NOT a sausage town. (the half smoke really doesn't count)
Honey 1 BBQ is right in Rico's neck of the woods.
I'm surprised I haven't heard of it.
I've just found that Robinson's ribs are consistently better than Fat Willy's. But Willy's has better sides.
Honey 1 just opened a couple months ago. They used to be on the far west side (around Austin, I believe). Father & son team running the show, and they're very cool. I went in one Saturday night just as they were closing up to get a slab as a birthday present (because who wouldn't love to receive the gift of ribs, right?). I talked the dude into giving me one of the two slabs he had made to take home for himself. It took 15 bucks and a six pack from the liquor store across the street, but I got it done.
brian, again, i believe we were separated at birth. as the zygote split, you received the tall, mellow, white genes and i received the small, hyper, asian genes.
if someone gave me ribs for a birthday present, i'd have to marry them -- male or female, it would unquestionably be true love.
i'm so lazy from burger & beer that i can't get myself to walk down the hall to the bathroom...now how's that for lazy?
one hour to go and i can legitimately blow this joint. i must clean, pack, have cat sitter come by, and then catch the supershuttle (aka, bastard/bad customer service "shit"-tle) to the airport and fly back to the homeland. sunny so cal. if my family weren't totally bonkers, i'd be excited.
Oh, on the King Kong point - I have no idea, and I've not seen it, mainly because it's like 3 hours long. I don't know if Ace has a longer attention span at 5 than I do at 31, but there's no way I can sit still through 3 hours of that.
yeah, i don't know...the king kong movie does seem a bit long AND i don't know about you, but the kong looks so freakin' scary and real to me. if i were 5, i think it'd freak me out. but then again, i'm not a boy and i think boys like that kind of stuff...tough call.
there's a good site that aggregates all major movie reviews onto one site called rottentomatoes.com . maybe there you can find more info on how violent the movie is or not for the lil' one.
Damn it! I hate deleted comments, it makes me feel like I'm late to the party. Did someone break the anonymity again?
Thanks for your King Kong input, 3 hours does seem long, even for Ace who has a pretty impressive attention span. He goes nuts for the commercials, so I don't think he'd be scared of the The Kong. I was more worried about when they kill him.
Horse cock.
Sorry, I just enjoyed all the horse cock talk yesterday and was kind of missing it right now.
Ethics, you couldn't sit through 3 hours of Jack Black?
Qui es mus macho?
Sorry, that was me with the deleted comment! I was trying to get my macho link to work . . . . I never did a link in html before, so I hope it works!
I like Jack Black when he's funny; not this other way. I dunno. I don't think Kong's the movie for me. Plus, the three hours ain't happenin'.
It is however, mucho importante that I see The Ringer. Other than my huge inexplicable crush on Johnny Knoxville, retards = funny. I can't help it. I didn't make the rules. They just are.
Food and liquor are great gifts. Especially when the food is still piping hot. Plus you don't really need to wrap it. I hate wrapping presents.
jade, rent the '76 version of King Kong and pop that in the ol' DVD player. Or is he set on going to the theater? Will he know the difference? Kids are pretty sharp these days. They don't believe it when you take them to a Schaumburg Flyers game and tell them it's Wrigley Field.
Good call, Brian. He's not particularily set on going to the theater, and in ways I think he might prefer to be at home. I'll rent the old one and if he likes it and is not scared by it, I might consider taking him to a matinee of the new one. I imagine the new one is far more realistic and scarier than the old one.
Seriously people, horse cock. That doesn't get old. I think Rico should change his blog name.
So I thought it would be funny if I changed my picture thing to horse cock or something to do with horse cock. Even if it was just a picture of a horse and a cock (the rooster kind).
So, in my waaaaayyy too tired/still kinda drunk/hungover stupor yesterday, I did a google image search for "horse cock" yesterday.
Don't do this, people. Seriously. That ranks in the top 5 of my all time worst ideas, and I've had a lot of bad ideas. Ugh. I'm shuddering just thinking about it.
Ricock?
I remember the '76 King Kong well. Not for the ape (surprisingly), but for the see-through dress on a young Jessica Lange. Hubba hubba.
Ricock! That just made me choke.
Jessica Lange was such a babe.
Oooh, I can't wait to get home & google 'horse cock'. For obvious reasons I won't be dong, I mean, doing, this at work.
she was hot.
the chick in laurel canyon was hot too.
in laurel canyon I mean.
well in laurel canyon and the vampire/werewolf movie.
ricocock and ethicsrock...there's got to be a rap in there somewhere.
LT - DO NOT DO IT. It's just icky.
Speaking of Ricock, does anyone know if Phillip Michael Thomas is still doing the late night infomercials for the psychic line? If not, what's he up to? I watched a few hours of the Miami Vice marathon a couple weeks ago - he was really a terrible actor.
Yes, but doesn't his whole style hold up better than Don Johnson's? I was watching 'I Love the 80's' a year or two ago & they had a clip of his music video. It was so disturbing - he was all shirtless & sweaty & had that mid-80s porny look. It was still a better video than 'Hearbeat' by Don Johnson.
I can testify that a google image search of horse cock is not pleasant, because I of course immediately did one as soon as ethics said it disturbed her.
I just think ricock needs to be prepared to back up his claims at the conference.
PMT and Don Johnson combined can't hold a candle to David Hasslehoff when it comes to actors turned musicians.
My friend described the acting method of the entire Miami Vice cast as, "HOW DO YOU KNOW I'M SERIOUS? I'M SERIOUS BECAUSE I AM SHOUTING! AND I AM SERIOUS!!"
It made me sad, b/c I LOVED that show, and I remember just how damn cool it was back when I was in 5th grade.
Of course neither of them is a Hasslehoff (who, by the way is from Essex, MD in Baltimore County), but he's a Once In A Generation phenom.
Now, who wants me to burn them a copy of my beloved Baywatch soundtrack?!
A friend of mine just sent me a video link to Run-DMC's "Christmas In Hollis".
Best holiday song EVER, and DMC's first set of lyrics are just perfect for today's blog:
It's Christmas time in Hollis, Queens
Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens
Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese
And Santa put gifts under Christmas trees
Decorate the house with lights at night
Snow's on the ground, snow white so bright
In the fireplace is the yule log
Beneath the mistletoe as we drink egg nog
The rhymes you hear are the rhymes of Darryl's
But each and every year we bust Christmas carols
I just found a box of big gourmet chocolate toffee covered pretzels.
I thought Hasselhoff was from the western Chicago burb of LaGrange. Was he born in Essex? He taught my cousin to water ski, at least that's what I always heard. Also in LaGrange, Styx used to play at my cousins' high school dances.
I haven't been a-carol bustin' in a long time.
