I haven’t even thought about Adams in YEARS.

Simultaneously, I have Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’” and The Kinks “Alcohol” stuck in me ‘ead.

I haven’t even thought about Adams in YEARS. Yesterday, out of the blue, the theme song comes to me (which I posted, and nobody caught or bothered to acknowledge, leaving the blogger formerly known as dipso hangin’ -- ouch). Then, last night, out of the fucking blue, some guy at the bar turns to me and asks “What was Uncle Jesse’s donkey’s name on Grizzly Adams? Six?”

Life is really something.

I think it was “Seven.” ANYONE??!!?

What the hell am I going to have for lunch? I need to recover/prepare from/for a night of heavy drinking. Please use all of your powers, people. Lester needs you.

So anyway, I know nothing of Grizzly Adams, except that I'm surprised that there isn't a young rapper or porn star who has appropriated the name. Grizzzzlee Adamz or something.

I am going to a luncheon in the near west suburbs of Chicago (Belwood). I'm not sure what they're serving, but alcohol will be involved.

After that I will probably have a work dinner. After that I am all about the WFL crew. We need an agenda, or at least a first bar where to meet. Bucktown/Wicker Park sounds like a central loaction. Any suggestions other than Cans?

I am tipsy. Yay for champagne at the 9am staff meeting on an empty stomach.

I need an appropriate lunch for tonight. I packed a flask of bourbon for the plane, but I'm going to need something more substantial. I wish I were flying through Detroit so I could get a pb&j - maybe I'll get one from Potbelly.

Lester, you need something with heavy bread, heavy cheese and fries.

The Doctor said...

I listed six or seven possibilities yesterday!!!

Yeah, I wouldn't remember me either.

Cheese, eh?

HaterTot said...

Cheese is magic. I'm serious. It will do wonders. I know you had one yesterday, but I'm thinking cheeseburger for you. Maybe a side salad.

I need to sober up in a hurry. I'm just tipsy enough that I just want to pass out on my desk. Not good. Not good at all.

Unknown said...

i join in ethics' praise of champagne at 9am staff meeting on an empty stomach! does champs on an empty stomach cause ulcers? i had coffee on and empty stomach BEFORE the champs...does this mean that i will spontaneously combust at my desk today? one can only hope for so much drama.

lester (the molester), i second ethics by saying you should have a cheeseburger. or you could have a healthy lunch and then make sure to get a heavy early dinner like spaghetti and meatballs or a cheeseburger. i always feel that one should always eat greasy goodness a bit closer to a heavy drinking binge to soak up the first bits of alcohol. however, not too close to the drinking event else you will be too full to guzzle. i say eat full salad for lunch and then have a hamburguesa con queso at around 6pm (assuming you will start drinking around 9pm).

also, i heard carolers in dupont circle last night singing "silent night" but replacing words to denounce the war in iraq...dammit washingtonians, sometimes you need to get off your pulpit and chillllllll!

Jada said...

I was told that I need to show up and weigh in with tonights bar issue. I don't like Bucker Park, but I will put aside my preferences for the WFL crew. I prefer something really close to me because I am selfish and self absorbed. I heard a suggestion of Joy Blue the other day that I could get behind.

I could really go for a big fat juicy burger for lunch today.

Unknown said...

oh, and did i mention that i've got the "asian glow" and tipsy too? i should take a drag of bourbon from ethics' flask just to keep the buzzz goin...yahowww!

HaterTot said...

I think the WFLers should go carolling tonight, but replace the words with things appropriate to lunch.

Oh, good - I love drinking challenges from Rico. I've recently learned that my ego is "out of control" but I am 100% certain that Rico "ladies don't eat burritos" Tubbs can not give me a 3 day hangover.

Jada said...

I love you, ethics. Sorry, I just had to share.

What about Moe's Cantina or Mystic Celt? I hate not having a place decided upon. It makes me uneasy.

And I am definitely in favor of North side.

HaterTot said...

I will share my horoscope for today:

Today is well aspected for making new friends, dear Sagittarius. Your sense of adventure is, without a doubt, up to this! You will be your usual confident self, but others will seem to respond even more than usual to your charisma. You may meet someone who lives far away at a party, and be invited to visit them at a later date. What a wonderful opportunity for travel!

Is Chicago considered far away? Which is you is daring enough to invite me to visit at a later date?

I am in a goofy mood. Silly champagne.

Jada said...

This is bad, I just realized I am wearing my favorite hang over sweater and jeans today. What am I supposed to wear tomorrow? I'll probably show up in my pajamas. I am just a little too excited about going out tonight. I never go out during the week, this could prove to be revolutionary. I haven't even been going out on the weekends lately.

Jada said...

I am bringing a camera, and I will document the debauchery [as well as the boobs of someone who shall remain nameless] and I just might post them in the future if anyone gets sassy with me. I'm just requesting that someone else brings weapons because I apparently have psycho stalkers who have followed me over here and I am publicly announcing my plans of where I will be tonight.

Unknown said...

jade, i'm positive that the WFLers will protect you from all freaks that follow you around this eve. NOTE TO STALKER: the WFLers are mostly big, burly, ass-kicking men! I REPEAT, do not stalk jade if you know what is good for you.

that being said, i have to repeat how sad i will be to not join in the debauchery. i suggest that you do sing ethics' sweet lunch carol around town tonight. it could catch on and be a WFL holiday tradition to sing every winter. has anyone checked on the logo contest? also, has everyone weighed in on the food places for the spring conference? if so, i will build an online survey soon and send them to you. if you could please send your e-mail addresses to ethicsrock, that would be grand

HaterTot said...

Hey, do we need LaChoi to construct a survey of where to go tonight? She's the survey wiz - I'm sure she could whip something up for us.

The Doctor said...

Go to it, La Choi.

I’m dreaming of a hot lunch
Just like the ones mom used to make
Where the cheese is artisinal
The bread’s not dismal
And followed by a TastyCake

I’m dreaming of the perfect sandwich
One with mayo, meat and cheese
Where the bread is toasted
And the turkey’s roasted
Will you make one for me, please?

More verses to come… I know you can barely contain yourselves.

I don't think Bucktown should not be taken out of play. Ethics has to end up there.

Since when is Bucktown/WP so hard to get to? Hello, Blue Line?

Northside has a fireplace to help thaw out the (sure to be) underdressed ethics. Plenty of TV's for college football viewing. Decent pub grub.

I will admit I'm partial to the area because I like to end my night at UnderDogg with a bacon char burger and cheddar (not squeeze cheez) fries. But that's just me.

The Doctor said...

Link posting sucks.

I had a sort of brunchy mac and cheese so far. Helpful. Head hurts, though.

Brian said...

Let's not forget the tater tots at Lottie's either.

HaterTot said...

Did I hear tater tots?

Look, this is all y'all's city and I'm just happy to be your guest, but my only tiny request is that I really, really like dive bars. Dark. Wood. Beer.

I don't necessarily "need" to end up anywhere at the end of the night, so much as it would convenient if I did, but really, my only interest here is that the bar(s) be low key, not trendy, and dive-y. A good jukebox wouldn't hurt, but isn't a pre-req, since I'm spending my day penning xmas carols for us to sing.

Oh, and Tater Tots. I like the sound of that very much.

Brian said...

"y'all"? Don't you mean "yinz"?

The Doctor said...

I love you, Brian.

This is what I suggested yesterday:
Beachwood, Gold Star, Zakopane, Danny's, The Map Room, Estelle's, Lottie's, the Inner-town, Tuman's.

What do you think?

HaterTot said...

Hey, is there anywhere I can get Iron Shitty in Chicago?

(I promise to whip out a few yinz's and dahntahn's, slippy's and I'll be sure to leave out the verb "to be" wherever possible)

Jada said...

Bucker Park is overrated. The blue line is a pain in the ass if you live on the northside. You have to go all the way down to the loop and transfer to the blue? Not fun. I don't like the holier than thou hipsters especially since Bucker Park is just Lincoln Park Pt II. The residents are no different from the trixies and chads except they wear white belts and hang out at Filter instead of pink Uggs and Starbucks. It is pretentious, expensive and too far west. Not that it has any bearing on our festivities for the night but I don't understand why anyone would opt to live in Chicago and be so far from the lake. Boooo on Bucker Park. I'm hungry and crabby.

Jada said...

If you want a dive, how about Carol's Pub or the Lakeview Lounge?

HaterTot said...

I just want tater tots. Can't we all get along??

(DO NOT make me turn this blog around.)

HaterTot said...

Update: LaChoi and I are going to lunch. When we return, she will craft a survey.

Brian said...

Gold Star & Zakopane is a nice two-fer Tuesday. Cheap drinks. The divey kinda spots that ethics would enjoy. Plus the Gold Star is haunted by a couple ghosts. Inner Town is just around the corner too.

Tuman's isn't the same since they re-did it last year. I miss sitting on old kegs and ratty couches.

Danny's is probably a little too hipsterish.

In the spirit of the blog, we should probably try to meet somewhere with decent food, huh? Then go from there?

They have IC at Durkin's. I was sucked into that place last Sunday for the Bears game, not knowing it was a Steelers bar. Greg Lloyd jerseys, Terrible Towels and Cowher mustaches as far as my eye could see. Creepy.

HaterTot said...

STILLERS BAR!!!!!!!

Kidding. But it would be funny if I had my Ravens purple "Steelers Suck" T-shirt with me. I"m too afraid to even have that in my bag at home, but a Chicago Steelers bar, I could maybe handle.

I just tried on the cold weather gear I've assembled, and I look like an Albanian refugee. Totally hot.

For lunch: Chef's salad, french onion soup.

For dinner... I'm thinking a great big burrito, heavy on the sour cream. Thoughts, Rico?

Brian said...

Carol's is fun when they have the band playing, but I'm pretty sure they're off tonight.

A burrito for dinner? No no no no no. That'll just weigh you down. Burritos are for closing the night out.

Unknown said...

ok folks, here's the survey. but i want to ask everyone one thing: do you want me to email it to you so that "guests" who access the blog on occasion but will not be joining in the festivities this eve cannot answer it? if so, send your email addresses to ethicsrock. thanks!

Brian said...

Do I have to be a member of this website in order for my survey answers to go through?

Brian said...

I should rephrase that...do I have to be a member of the SurveyMonkey website?

I love orangutans too.

Unknown said...

whoo hoo! we're up to six responses so far. i wonder if jo has had a chance to weigh in?

i am publishing all of the summary statistics when i get everyone's input. then i will tell you what my analysis is and what bar you must at least start at and one that you must end at. stay tuned...

Jada said...

I have eaten a burger and fries and a COKE. I am a little less crabby as my blood sugar is slowly rising. I still have a messed up scalp full of chemical burns but my mood is improving slightly.

HaterTot said...

I think we use this SurveyMonkey business in the course of our work here at ThePlaceofBusiness. If that is the case, I question our methodology. Monkeys aren't to be trusted.

HaterTot said...

Does Jo know what time my plane gets in? Last night he was like, "I'll be at the airport at 8," which, while nice, will have him hanging out there for a good 40 minutes before I arrive.

Unknown said...

monkeys are awesome. especially when they are in movies. i say any hit comedy film has to have all three of the following things:

1) fart humor
2) midgets
3) monkeys

in other words, monkeys ARE to be trusted.

sorry about your chem burn jade. did you dye your hair or something? a good night of boozing should fix you right up.

it may be that there is a stranger taking the survey as someone voted for "hip-hop bar" as an option. obviously, someone doesn't know ethics that well.

the results are trickling in and are quite interesting, especially the open-ended essay portion. don't you wish you could see what everyone wrote?

Jada said...

I had my roots done last night and had a bad reaction to the dye. I was bleeding and blistering and it was so nasty. I didn't mention it earlier because this is allegedly a lunch blog and I didn't want to kill anyone's appetite. I am going to need a nap before going out tonight.

Moe's Cantina
3518 N. Clark St.
773-248-0002

The folks behind the popular John Barleycorn pubs, took over the former Crystal's Car Wash (which is right next door to their Wrigleyville location ), converting it into a modern Mexican cantina -- with lots of Spanish and South American flair. The cavernous barrel-roofed space features glazed acid-stained concrete topped bars, an open kitchen and glass garage doors that retract so you can watch the Clark Street hoo-ha during summer. The menu features small plate choices like skewers and sopes, plus more substantial fare like banana-wrapped halibut with chipotle sauce and parrillada de carnes, with rib-eye, rib ends, skirt steak and bone-in chicken served on a tabletop grill. Moe, the man behind the name, is a friend of the family who's developed quite a reputation for his culinary skills.

Hey Moe, Fuck YOU!!!

Jada said...

Has my bad mood rubbed off on Lester? What's got your panties in a twist?

Is there someway I can check the survey results or is it just ethics and La Choi in on the goods?

Brian said...

So does that mean I can get some hot wax & a high pressure rocker panel spraying on my ribeye?

I won't be free until after 9 tonight. After I explain the lunch blog to my girlfriend and why I plan on meeting yinz for drinks we'll rendezvous somewhere at some point.

Unknown said...

i'm looking to see if i can tell who took what survey...more on that soon.

HaterTot said...

"so you can watch the Clark Street hoo-ha during summer"

Unless Moe's is a nekkid bar, this must mean something different than what it means where I come from.

HaterTot said...

Yeah, I feel like there's going to be a lot of 'splainin' goin' on tonight.

You should bring the g/f - maybe you guys can reprise your Halloween Islands in the Stream performance?

Brian said...

I'm sure she'll be down for cocktailing.

I will be sporting my El Diablo hat for easy identification.

HaterTot said...

And I'll be the Albanian refugee eating tater tots in the corner. (even though no one else prioritized tater tots. Traitors. If I have to go the whatever supermarket - Jewell is it? - and get my own OreIdas, I will have tater tots tonight, dammit)

Jada said...

The Doctor said...

(I do this every once in a while…)

I went to the Gourmet Pantry. Got a ham sandwich, and I ordered like Henry Chinaski. “I want haaam. Ham, with mustard and relish.” (I wish it could be over then and they’d just give me the sandwich, but of course, they have to ask what kind of bread, they’re confused by my choice of condiments, etc., and it totally kills the suspension of disbelief.)

So, yeah, what I have now is a ham sandwich on light rye with mustard and pickle relish. I really dislike this sandwich. But I keep going back for it, ‘cause I got the guts. I got the guts. But the guts need fuel.

Brian said...

Okay, we can make a stop at Lottie's for tots (if Bucktown is in the cards), but half the time I've been in there they've been out of them. Bastards.

We need to take some pictures of Ethics wandering the streets in Albanian refugee wear & crying the tears of a hungry girl in search of tater tots.

HaterTot said...

Ham with mustard. Okay. Ham with mustard and horseradish. Okay. (but not as good as ham with mayo and horseradish) But you lose me with the addition of relish. That is weird on so many levels. I suppose it could be helped perhaps with the addition of potato chips on the sandwich, lest I would think the sandwich gets soggy.

However, I'm mentally playing the movie of this exchange in my head, and I'm just glad no one can see me.

The Doctor said...

Soggy, yes, yet dry at the same time.

It's a terrible sandwich, I tell you. Revolting.

Josephus said...

"All my friends!"

I am very proud of you, 75+ comments is outstanding.

I will indeed pick up ethics. 8:40 at O'Hare Independence air baggage claim, I'll be driving around in a Taurus. Does anyone want to grab a drink earlier? If so I can treat for a bit at the bar in the Westin River North 1st floor area. Let me know. CSR sends his best. At least a few non WFLers will be out tonight drinking in solidarity with us tonight as well. I am extremely excited. So what do I do till then?

Oh, for lunch they served coldcuts, meatballs, italian sausages and pizza. Plus alotta beer and liquor. I stuck to miller lite. Only had 4.

Extremely clever The Jade. "Bucker Park" Should we start calling you "The Trixie"?

Jada said...

I DO NOT wish I lived in Bucker Park. I am NOT a Trixie. I am also NOT a "northside no-leaver" as I was privately accused of earlier. I live in Uptown for christ sakes and I love it. Loooooove it.

Josephus said...

And I believe The Jade was once heard saying the following words "I am a Wrigley Field fan not a Cubs fan".

Sounds like The Trixie to me.

HaterTot said...

Ha! But I will not be crying b/c I plan to have my sunglasses on while outside. This is to prevent my delicate eyes from tearing due to the wind and cold, which happens when the temperature dips below about 50.

Combined with my hat, scarves and multiple pairs of gloves, I will be a vision of Albanian refugee loveliness.

Jada said...

I am not a fan of baseball. But how can you not love Wrigley Field? I do not drive a Jetta. I don't live in Lincoln Park. I don't own a pair of Uggs. I can formulate cogent sentences. I am not a Trixie.

And obviously I am going to have to kick some ass tonight.

survey breakdown: (percentages based out of 8 total respondents. a very small sample, but the very representative of the WFL population)

1) What kind of music do you like?
WINNING RESPONSE: 50% - I like it all
RUNNER UPS: 12.5% - Classic rock
12.5% - Indie
25% - Hip hop/Rap
0% for top 4, blues, and country. (come on guys...no one likes kelly clarkson or carrie underwood???)

2) When I go to a bar, I like the ambience to be:
WINNING RESPONSE: 87.5% - Divey and very quiet/low-key w/o hipsters b/c they suck!
RUNNER UPS:
12.5% - Hip-hop music playin' bar (ricotubbs, thou art valient indeed)

3) I want there to be good and cheap food options at the bar we go to tonight.
WINNING RESPONSE: 50% - I don't give a fuck...ROCK ON WFLERS! yeah, stick it to the man!
RUNNER UPS
37.5% - Yes
12.5% - No

4) The presence of tater-tots is ABSOLUTELY essential to where I want to go this evening.
WINNING RESPONSE: 75% - an overwhelming NO (sorry ethics!)
RUNNER UPS
12.5% - yes & I don't care about food b/c it'll leave less room for drinking

5) How many bars do you want to visit this evening?
WINNING RESPONSE: IT'S A TIE! 37.5% both for 1, because I am old and 3 or more. are you all totally bipolar???
RUNNER UPS
25% - 2 bars
0% - chillin' at someone's house

6) The alcoholic drink that I will probably consume the most this evening is:
WINNING RESPONSE: 62.5% - A good ole cheap swill beer

7) the "I need to hook up" question
WINNING RESPONSE:
62.5% - Strongly disagree or disagree! (sorry ricotubbs, you got shot down again!)
RUNNER UPS
25% - are indifferent

8) Open-ended essay question.
WINNING RESPONSE: (in my opinion) is Brian with an astounding and profound explanation of why bucktown is the better choice. here's his eloquent entry:

Not one particular bar per se, but the Bucktown area around North/Milwaukee/Damen has a bunch of different taverns (and food options) to choose from. These bars are all within 3/4 of a mile of each other: Darwin's (free old school Nintendo, great beer & food) Lemmings (dark wood, local artwork, tin ceilings, Schlitz memorabilia) Northside (fireplace, TV's for sports, another dark woodsy bar, good beer & food) Nick's Beergarden (late night, internet jukebox, nude painting on the wall with bulletholes in it) These two are a quick cab ride away & right across the street from each other: Zakopane (Polish bar, Polish bartender, Polish jukebox sprinkled with AC/DC and Abba, Polish patrons) Gold Star (dive bar extraordinaire, haunted, great jukebox, cheap drinks) OK I'm spent. --Brian

i will continue with my analysis shortly, but chew on that for a bit...

Josephus said...

That'll do lachoi, that'll do.

1) start off in non-hipster, divey, chill bar in bucktown

2) go closer to jade if possible and have a drink that is more easier for her to get to and not have to change lines so much

3) end evening at OTAH for ethics' convenience.
