Restaurant has been tradition for generations of Chicagoans

First Marshall Field's, now The Berghoff.Chicago will lose another commercial and cultural icon when the 107-year-old Berghoff Restaurant, a Loop landmark, serves its last schnitzel on Feb. 28.Herman Berghoff, the 70-year-old grandson of the restaurant's founder, and his wife, Jan Berghoff, 68, are retiring. Herman Berghoff, who's been working at the German-style restaurant since 1952, owns the building at 17 W. Adams St. and will lease it to his daughter Carlyn Berghoff's catering company. She plans to reopen the bar this spring under a slightly different name but convert the elegant dining room to a private banquet hall, thus ending the reign of one of Chicago's oldest and most fattening restaurants."It's hard to believe," said Rich Melman, founder of Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, a Chicago-based restaurant company, who recalls first eating at The Berghoff 45 years ago. "I feel such a personal loss for Chicago. It's like losing the Cubs or something."Christopher Lackner, a spokesman for Herman and Jan Berghoff, said the decision to close "wasn't without great thought. The Berghoff family shares the sadness the city shares."The Berghoffs never put the building or the restaurant on the market, Lackner said. Both the building and the business would fetch a high price."It does very well," Lackner said. "It is a very successful business." He declined to disclose its revenues.Under the family's plan, Artistic Events by Carlyn Berghoff Catering Inc. will take over the building this winter. She will rename the bar 17 West at The Berghoff and reopen the adjoining cafe but reserve the dining room--cloaked in rich oak and graced with pictures of old Chicago--for private, catered events.Artistic Events hasn't determined what if any changes will be made to the building's exterior, including its landmark sign, said Jennifer Connelly, a spokeswoman for the company. The Berghoff traces its roots to Herman Joseph Berghoff's desire in 1898 to showcase his Dortmunder-style beer. At a bar at State and Adams Streets, he sold it for a nickel a mug and offered sandwiches for free.Prohibition forced The Berghoff to expand into a full-service restaurant, which has been at its current location--next door to the original--since 1936.The Berghoff was the first Chicago establishment to get a liquor license after Prohibition ended in 1933.It was also known for maintaining a separate, men-only bar long after such practices faded. For legions of Chicago men of a certain age, The Berghoff was a stop-off point for a beer before attending a Blackhawks game at Chicago Stadium, or one of the first destinations after turning 21.The men-only tradition ended in 1969 when seven members of the National Organization for Women sat down at the bar and demanded service. But mostly, The Berghoff has been known as an old-style, family-run restaurant where the waiters wear black jackets and white aprons. It's been a traditional stop for generations of Chicagoans and visitors.Lifetime memoriesBill Figel, who owns a public relations firm at Adams and LaSalle Streets, is a third-generation customer of The Berghoff. His grandfather, a lawyer in the neighborhood who worked a half-day on Saturdays like others in the profession, would go there with others for a corned beef sandwich at noon on Saturdays. His father would meet friends at The Berghoff before heading to a college double-header basketball game at the stadium."There's nothing more authentic than the German atmosphere," Figel said.
With lines out the front door common, Figel shared a tip--an "old Chicago trick" now of limited use--for bypassing the out-of-towners. Walk through the bar to the back of the dining room, grab a table and then tip a waiter.Crowds are biggest this time of year. During the holiday season, the number of customers served each day jumps from about 1,500 to 3,000.Kathy Scopelliti was one of the holiday revelers Wednesday, dining with her husband and two friends, all in town for the day from the Chicago suburbs. "When our waiter told us [about the closing] I couldn't believe it was true."Scopelliti, 51, was introduced to The Berghoff at age 5 by her grandmother. "It was a big deal to come downtown--wearing hats and gloves--and go to The Berghoff."She still comes two or three times a year, often for lunch with her mother and her sister. "I have a lot of good memories. It's like Field's now. The Berghoff will be a memory too."She of course was talking about the venerable Marshall Field's brand, soon set to vanish when its owner, Federated Department Stores Inc., converts the chain to Macy's."It makes me sick, first Field's, and now this," said Laura Howell of Chicago as she was about to order dessert.Distinctive Chicago brands are increasingly giving way to seemingly rootless chains, she said. "Are we supposed to take up our next year's holiday traditions at Victoria's Secret?"O'Hare cafe to stay openThe Berghoff Cafe at O'Hare International Airport will remain open. It has a somewhat different ownership structure, and includes Carlyn Berghoff as an owner. Her catering business, Artistic Events, has been around for about 20 years, and is housed in the West Loop. But Berghoff's landlord bought out her lease recently in order to redevelop the building into condominiums, Connelly said, so Artistic Events has to vacate by the end of March.Artistic Events has about $5 million in annual sales and has 45 full-time employees. The Berghoff has 92 full-time employees, including several waiters who have been employed for decades.

aaaah man! i was so looking forward to trying this place at the spring conference. i guess we'll have to take it off the list. :-(
That's sad. Even though I don't know it, having been in Chicago a total of 36 hours for a work thing. Macy's is taking over Hecht's here in the DC area. Sad to lose something like that. :-( I am having lunch with crushboy from my office today. Or maybe I'm having crushboy for lunch today! Ha! Unlikely. Anyhow. Wish me luck. At the very least that I don't make a fool of myself.
LT - GOOD LUCK!!!!! nothing like lunch with a crush to look forward to.
la choi, on the other hand, is cleaning house today. hoorah! lila cat took over and made everything into one furball when i left town. i came home to an entire bookshelf completely turned over and on the floor as well as stinky kitty poopy smell. not cool.
lunch today...perhaps some more of that old pizza. it didn't do anything to me unusual yesterday, which means i must consume it before it turns. waste not, want not.
Oh my God.
I never would have believed it. It makes me sick. I know I am just going to reiterate what was already stated in that article, but seriously we lose FIELD'S AND THE BERGHOFF in the same year? Are they going to tear down the Sears Tower next? Sell off the lakeshore to investors and build condos? It makes me so sad. I loved the whole liquor license No. 1 thing, too. My ex husband is going to be devestated, the Berghoff is like a social club for lawyers during lunch.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Wasn't it also one of the first places we nominated for the conference?
I'm sad.
it was the first place nominated for the spring conference, which means that it must be an important lunching venue. i suggest that the chicago WFLers make sure to get together and eat there as a sort of farewell...either that or stage a protest.
it feels good to clean this house. perhaps i should not eat the pizza and just head out for local foods. there's a place called "burritos fast" around the corner that serves it up authentic-like. a little sketchy, but aren't those the best places for food sometimes? why is that?
I'm really unhappy I'm going to miss what sounds like a legendary place for lunchtime eating, drinking and socializing. Being from Pittsburgh, we've been hit with many such closings, and it seems like everytime I go home, something isn't here anymore. So sad.
I'm basically having a giant xmas feast tonight, so I think I'm going light on lunch. I'll report back later.
I'm still really bummed about the Berghoff. I brought my lunch today: turkey, baby swiss, romaine lettuce, dijon mustard on 12 grain bread, a little bag of chips and an orange. I'll probably eat around 1:00. I'm kinda hungry right now, but resisting the urge to snack or eat lunch early because I want to drop a couple pounds.
so instead of burritos fast, i settled for heating up some frozen chicken vindaloo from TJ's...delish. oh, and had 1 piece of old pizza just to get rid of it. i'm dedicated to my leftovers.
now i'm supremely irritated. i can't find my passport! not that i'm leaving out of the country anytime soon, but i'm just annoyed that i can't find it. this happened once before, and i remember telling myself to put it somewhere so that i don't lose it again. wtf???
I do not get your dedication to your leftovers La Choi, it makes tummy all quivery just thinking about it. Thank god that pizza is gone now, at least. What is chicken vindaloo?
it's some indian chicken and rice stuff. spicy. yummy. i guess you wouldn't know what it is since indian isn't your thing...you're missing out!
yes, the leftovers thing is just something ingrained in me since childhood. you can blame the C-Choi for that one. (C-Choi is what my sis and i call our mom)
i got 2 free starbucks cards for hannukah this year. (yes, i celebrated with a dear friend in LA. she has made me an honorary jew and changed my last name to 'choistein') perhaps i'll get a gingerbread latte...those things are amazing.
Yeah, Indian isn't my thing, but I like the name vindaloo. It's fun to say.
Welcome to the tribe, Choistein! I love honorary jews. But in order to really qualify, you have to stuff your pockets with Splenda, or some other artificial sweetner, like a good future Jewish grandma.
thx jade. whenever i use splenda, it makes me feel like i'm on crack though. i get the shakes! but if that is what a good jewish grandma does, then i shall comply.
did you know that koreans and jews have a lot in common? my friend and i talk about this all the time and how more and more korean/jewish marriages are occuring these days. (at least, this is the apparent trend in Cali) my friend's cousin is married to a korean chick and they have the cutest 'jewasian' babies ever.
ok, so i'm too lazy to leave the house to get a gingerbread latte. i'm pathetic. instead, i'm flirting with a friend of mine in nyc, listening to run dmc's mary mary, and making comments to comments on my latest blog entry. (which is very entertaining if any of you are bored)
btw, is there any place even similar to the berghoff to replace it in the spring conference list?
Oh Splenda is wretched. I hate artificial sweetners on principle, but Splenda actually foams up and it's gross. But stealing the artificial sweetners from restaurants and Satrbucks is such a Jewish grandma thing to do. I do it too ocassionally because I like to keep some sweet n lo or splenda on hand for my guests that use that crap, but I am unwilling to spend my own money on it.
I did not know about the Jewish/Korean connection, but like most things in the US trends start first on the coasts and work their way in to my little part of the Midwest. I personally love Korean food, though. There was a place in EL that was awesome at lunch, and they would just bring me bowl after bowl of kimchi because I think it amused them how much of it I could eat.
Unfortunately there is no good substitute for the Berghoff, but we have so many other places to hit that we will still inevitably miss out on some great places.
Mmmmm . . . vindaloo. Just back from lunch with crushboy and I am definitely moving on now. He's sort of semi-dating this woman who sounds like she's more into it than he is. But we shall be friends and occasional lunch buddies! I am developing a sneaking suspicion he may make a better lunch buddy than boytoy . . . .
Oh, and I forgot to say that I didn't get vindaloo - but something just as spicy. Kapow chicken at this Thai place. Has anyone ever heard of Kapow chicken (or beer or pork or shrimp)? Is it just that place's cheap ripoff of China's Kung Pao all thai-ified? I don't think I've seen it, but I'm not sure. At any rate it was good. And spicy. Got the sinuses cleared out. More water, please!
as a korean, i have to say that spicy food rules. i admire jade's love of kimchi and LT's kapow dish. yeah, i don't know about whether it's a rip off of kung pao or what. in fact, i had a discussion the other day with the C-choi and said how kung pao here on the east coast doesn't at all taste like kung pao in the west coast. east coast does tons of peanuts. west coast does it in a yummy spicy corn syrupy consistency sauce (trust me, it's delightful!) and it's full of crushed red pepper goodness. i don't like the peanut version. often times, i forget that it comes that way and accidentally order it from chinese restaurants. i'm constantly disappointed.
vehemently hate artificial sweeteners too...LOVE sugar in the raw or as C-choi calls it "the rock sugar" that she uses to make capirinhas, though she can't really pronounce it so calls them "cah-sha" and i have to correct her every time.
LT -- PLEASE contact ethics about our NYE plans. she's been trying to get a hold of you. call ethics' cell...WHOOO!
Capirinhas RULE! They are my favorite drink, hands down. Unfortunately almost no one outside of Brazil has ever heard of them. I have a special wooden jumbo mortar and pestle for crushing the limes and a supply of cachaca for making them for myself.
What does "kočka" mean? Should I be flattered or offended that someone called me that?
Lester and the Ladies today. I like it!
I’m so sorry for being sparse and dilatory in my blogging today. I’d like to share a little e-conversation that's gone on with some non-WFLers over the course of the day. The names are changed to protect the guilty. It kind of makes you realize what a small, beautiful world this is. It's a string, so read from the bottom.
(I haven’t let them in on OWFL. Jo knows why. It wouldn’t be good. Trust Josephus. Also - at one point there seems to be a suggestion that I got a meatball sub with mayo. Not so. Misunderstanding. Lester's kicked that habit for good!)

Hm. Is that russian? My former roommate's cat was named something that might be spelled like in russian - it was pronounced 'kooshka' & it meant 'cat' in russian. So my theory is, someone is calling you a pussy. ;-p
GRAIN OF SALT ALERT: I, in fact, know next to nothing about the russian language.
Horrible about the Berghoff.
And Lester is right, TRUST ME.
