I am extremely hungry. I have asked a few friends off line for lunch suggestions and two stuck out.
" barbecue chicken salad with avocado, corn, black beans, blue and red tortilla strips and ranch dressing"
and...
"maple ham with gruyere, a tad of dijon, endive on ciabatta or a nice light, sweet rye"
Both sound good but I don't have the slightest idea of where to find them within walking distance of the corner of Connecticut Avenue and K Street.
Any ideas friends?
And of course What's For Lunch?

I had some Heller bagels and donuts for breakfast. NOw at 1pm I head off to our office Christmas party. Get this lineup: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, all kinds o' sides, pies, cakes, cookies. It's like Thanksgiving all over again, and best of all its on company time. Now THAT'S lunch...
Excellent LRB reference Jo!
I think I'm having cottage cheese and diet cherry coke. I love diet cherry coke. It is my favorite beverage - even superior to the original diet coke. However, it is still relatively scarce, so when I find it, I am overjoyed.
Hey, not a lunch question exactly, but a general question about food/drink related things: I'm having this party tomorrow night, with the "theme" being 1995/college - I have bought NOTHING for this shindig. What do I need?
SS - I'm sure that Ava Gardner is WAY cooler than your Ava, and she should be flattered by your confusion.
I have to admit, I didn't really read the title to this post -- I was so excited to get to the banter! -- so I was searching and searching for an "LRB" reference in Jo's original post. I could not, for the life of me, remember anything about ranch dressing in the Chairman's Little Red Book.
I think I might need some fried chicken -- I don't think there's a better base on the planet when you know things are going to get ugly later that night.
E, serve only Cutty Sark.
Ethics,
Party necessities:
Alcohol (and lots of it)
- beer
- hard booze
- fixins' for hard booze (juice, coke, etc)
ice (and lots of it)
chips
music
paper towels
name tags
cheese
Thanks for the suggestions. Especially E-que and Sinecure. I will hit both spots within the next 4 lunches but I think due to proximity Capital Grounds may get the edge today. Ethics since it appears watchdog and I may be the only WFLers attending the party (WHERE ARE THE REST OF YOU BASTARDS?) I recommend a Forties, Bloodies and Dirties bar. Everyone will happy.
After further review I may have to walk up to Wrapworks, the mashed potato piece is intriguing...
speaking of potatoes Jo, did you know that Tonic has a burger with mashed potatoes on it? Haven't tried it, but that sounds interesting...
At Tonic I usually go with the pulled pork or the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Mashed p's on a burger would fill me up in two bites.
Cutty Sark reminds me of my parents and godparents getting absolutely flambasted when I was kid. Ah, the good old days.
I've received a request for my "famous" vodka soaked tomatoes, and I know I'm making jello shots, b/c I'm 31, and OF COURSE there will be jello shots. (you can keep me out of Lucky Bar, but you can't keep me from my jello)
watchdog: I can't believe you left dancing midgets off of that list. You know how integral that is to any party.
Hey, any recommendations for the cheapest place to buy beer in bulk? Is it the big beer/ice emporium on FL ave? (I do not have a costco membership, so if anyone does and wants to take me tomorrow, that would be awesome)
Sinecure raises the key point here. I have zero interest in swigging warm Popov and koolaid from plastic cups - though this is not to say a Jungle Juice of some variety won't be on offer - but some of the fun of being 10 years into this "legal" thing is that I don't have to drink cans of Beast anymore. (nor do I think my 31 year old tummy could take that!)
Here's another worry: I live in fear of running out of beer. As such, I tend to overbuy. And I'm also afraid of the Curse of Keg, which seems to virtually guarantee that if you buy even a 1/4 keg, no one will show up, or if they do, they won't be drinking beer. (can you all tell it's been a long time since I threw a party at my home - there's a reason, I'm an insane control freak)
CATER TO YOUR AUDIENCE ETHICS!!!
I just looked at the Capital Grounds menu. Sold.

#1 Gangsta's Paradise
I've got most of the playlist ready; I spent some quality time with Rhapsody the other day and got my 95 on. (which, by the way, with the exception of a few highlights, was an abyssmal year for music)
Wow. Golf. Jesus. I don't exactly remember how to play, but I remember playing at a friend's shithole house at college and getting sick, but continuing to play - b/c I'm hardcore like that. Why do I have a feeling there will be people playing asshole and caps by the end of the night...
I remember a few weeks in 1995. Check that, parts of some weeks.
jesus christ, so many posts before 1pm! this must be a slow friday for everyone.
shhhh, i'm "sick" today. actually, i did feel sick when i woke up this morning at 11:30am...sick of work, that is. i hope no one is reading this and tells on me. i do work for an ethics organization and all.
ethics -- don't forget the boones farm strawberry hill. also, drinking games should be part of the evening, such as beer pong or flip cup. and even though you are celebrating 1995, you gots to put on some "gold digger" during the night...it's just necessary.
when i woke up, i cooked up a delicious breakfast burrito with grilled bell peppers, onions, eggs laced with basil, tomatoes, and salsa valentina. (mexico's official hot sauce) 'twas delicioso.
If it was me throwing a 1995 college themed party, it would have to be a Busch Lite keg [gross] but you already dismissed the keg idea and if serving food [and no party I went to in college served food] it would be Kraft Mac and Cheese and Ramen noodles.
My appetite has finally returned with a vengence, after 2 days of hell from the most recent post on my blog. I am celebrating by ordering in because it is too cold in Chicago to go out for lunch. I'm thinking a mushroom and sausage pizza from Mangia Roma and a salad because their Basil vinagrette is yummy yummy, oh so yummy.
Praise be, it's Friday!
Dear God - Busch lite. My stomach just convulsed. Glad you got your appetite back Jade - I'll have to check out your blog to see what was so awful so as to make you lose it in the first place!
I agree - no food at college parties. We're not going to take this 95/college thing to the extreme though. I mean, there are many things to be grateful for 10 years out, and one of them is certainly no more shitty keg beer.
A friend did suggest that I get a Coors Light Party Ball as a joke though. Do they even make those anymore? That was the stupidest idea ever. But after it's empty, it makes an interesting "beach ball"/bong type thing. Er... so I've heard...
A couple years ago I took a bunch of wine tasting classes and really got into wine. I would buy cases of wine I liked and then have tastings for my friends. It was great fun, but unfortunately got really expensive and I wasn't sure they truly appreciated it.
One day I called up a bunch of people and invited them for another wine tasting event, but I had a surprise waiting for them. Instead of a selection of white burgundies or Cab Sauv's, I had a table full of bum wines. You know, Cisco, Mad Dog, Boons, Wild Irish Rose, the cheapest nastiest stuff with a screw top I could find.
Everyone had to pick a bottle and drink it straight from the source. At first it was obnoxious but after a couple inches no one was feeling any pain. I did note though, that the people drinking the Cisco experienced something akin to psychotic episodes, and one person even attacked a chair of mine because he didn't like the way it was looking at him. I have since come to believe that the homeless aren't homeless because they are crazy, but they are driven crazy by the hooch they drink.
Any way, it was a great theme party.
That bad wine party reminds me of a 40 oz party some high school friends and I hosted at a buddy's house. We bought 6 cases of assorted 40's (about 54 total). The young kids loved it...
Well, Ms. Jade, our friend LaChoi happens to have a second job as the Mistress of the Wine Store, so that is certainly a plan for another party - or as she'll attest to, more often what we call Tuesday afternoon.
I drank Cisco once, and you're right about the result. That stuff is evil. When you were growing up, did they have like 20/20 specials or something warning parents about this "hot new drink among the kids" that resulted in death and whatnot? I seem to remember it being the meth of the late 80s/early 90s (as far as media terror trends go)
I really would like to keep this a MadDog free party. I can puke just thinking of BananaRed. Shiver. But you can rest assured, there will be plenty of Boone's on hand. A case should be like, $25 or something, right? Looks like I'm making a trip to the ghetto liquor warehouse.
Ethics--don't forget to pick up a 12 pack of Tecate to pour some out for Selena, and be sure to have some melon ball shots in honor of Shannon Hoon too.
Selena, Shannon, Roxie Roker, Jerry Garcia, Eazy E... so many greats left us in 95. And of course, OJ was acquitted. I'm totally going as Nicole Simpson...
I still can't get over how awful the music was that year. Christ. Cotton Eyed fuckin' Joe AND Tootsie Roll... ugh.
onto my second lunch of the day: pasta time! yes, i'm at home doctoring up some pasta sauce and going to enjoy eating a heaping bowl of fettucine noodles covered in delicious mushrooom and roasted garlic tomato sauce. hubba hubba.
Ethics, I certainly hope you won't be censoring out the bad music. It just makes us happy to see how far we've come!
As far as '95-stylin' drinks - I remember drinking a lot of Natty Bo & Rolling Rock for some reason. Also, you would be superfly (mm, crap, what was the hip slang back then?) if you could find some 'Pepsi Clear'. So '95!
Oh, uh, I went out to eat lunch today. With a friend. And when I got back this guy said he was running an errand, but we have to talk when he gets back about a project & I said 'Ok, holla at me when you're back.' WTF??? I am not that cool.
LT, I am censoring SOME bad music. Only because it's music that I can't stand to listen to b/c it makes me feel physically ill. (thank God the Macarena was the next year)
But I promise, I'll leave in some Real McCoy that "Short Dick Man" song, just for you.
By the way, I feel ill. Too much cottage cheese = bad lunch. Blecch.
Remember how the radio would sometimes censor it to 'Don't Want No Short Short Man?" which, also true, but much further down on the list of deal-breakers.
Um. I lie. Size doesn't matter, boys! It's not the size of the ship, it's the motion of the ocean!
Hey, didn't Zima come out around '95?
94, though, Pittsburgh was a test market - we were drinking that shit in High School. Can you even still buy Zima?
It's probably in the same market you'll find Pepsi Clear & Tab!
Oooh, Zima & Jolly Ranchers . . . mmmm.
I Wish all the WFLers could make it. I'm going to appoint someone official blog photographer for the event (I'm looking at you Ms. Turtle) and we'll report back.
In the meantime, I leave you all with these aspirational words from 1995:
I wish I was little bit taller,
I wish I was a baller,
I wish I had a girl who looked good
I would call her
I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat
and a six four Impala
