Monday, Monday...

Yes it's Monday and believe it or not it is my only work day this week. Screw you losers. I think a celebatory lunch is in order. I was thinking about hitting the "gourmet" buffet at Soho. A great selection of different hot cuisines and salads. I'm not sure what I'll pick up yet. How do you guys feel about the Lunch buffet? But more importantly WFL?

I made a trip to the farmer's market yesterday morning and picked up 4 pints of "little" tomatoes. I've made a salad of tomatoes and fets for lunch.

My problem today, as it seems to be a lot, lately, is that I'm so freakin' tired.

Any suggestions on how to wake up?

Well, ethics, coffee is the traditional waker-upper. I also have heard that eating a sliced apple (or not sliced) works. Blogging also tends to keep me awake, and unproductive.

Rico...taco bell? Really?

I didn't realize anyone ate at Taco Bell anymore, what with the proliferation of Chipotle, Baja Fresh and the like.

What will you have, rico?

An old school chum just called and asked if I wanted to have lunch with him today. We're going to a nearby restaurant with an eclectic menu. I have NO IDEA what's for lunch! Exhilarating, really. It could be anything. I think I'll ask the server for some recommendations and go with the lowest-priced item that he or she suggests. Not that I'm being chinsy here -- I think that's a solid strategy. There's always the possibility that the server is just trying to pad the bill by recommending a high-priced entree. However, what incentive would there be to recommend a lower-priced entree? I believe they'd be giving you trustworthy information about food that they've enjoyed, right? And since people are people, I should enjoy it, too. Right?

dipso, your logic is terrific, I think.

Last night at dinner, my friend ordered a glass of wine, and turns out, the restaurant was out of that particular bottle. The server came back and recommended something $2 CHEAPER. We were pretty surprised, and of course, drank even more because we were so pleased with the service.

(uh, and we're kind of lushes)

I like to believe the best about my servers and that in most places, that they have my best interests at heart.

Dipso what is the restaraunt? No online menu?

I haven't done Taco Bell since undergrad.

Ethics, I'm in the same boat. I'm whupped. Just set your productivity goals low for the day and try to take it easy on the booze tonight.

I know, it's a tall order when you're goofy for the sauce.

Funny, I wrote that before I saw your last e-mail.

Did a fish fry in Milwaukee a couple of weekends ago. I order the cod (9.99), my buddy asked the server and she immediately recommended the perch (which, at 11.99, was the highest priced item). Food came out...guess what, it was all FRIED FISH!

When I served, I NEVER tried to get anyone to order something because it was more expensive. Not once in @ three years. But a lot of servers do it...A LOT. I don't want to shake anyone's trust in humanity...just be wary.

I really wish I drank coffee. I'm on my third Diet Coke, though - things are looking up.

I'm not surprised to hear you say that about servers, dipso. I think I try really hard to develop a rapport with my server, and if I'm not feeling it, I probably don't ask for their opinion.

But on the other hand, I'll share another "good server" antecdote - I was at a semi-swanky tequila bar in the Marina in SF. As I knew I was going to spend my afternoon there, and was really only interested in drinking margaritas, when I ordered the first pitcher, the bartender asked what kind of tequila I wanted. Now, I'm not new to the world of drinkin' and I know that it's a total waste to drink good tequila in pitchers of margaritas, so I said, "Whatever's cheapest." He told me that he didn't think anyone had ever actually said that (considering the neighborhood) AND comped every other pitcher.

This is the kind of thing I look for in my servers/bartenders. And, even if my food is cheap, their tip will increase based on the level of service, even if my total bill is cheaper.

Josephus - what did you decide? I think csr turned me off of buffets forever.

Despite the warnings of CSR, (They don't let the homeless in this place)I did go to SOHO and got the following:
A base of fried rice and corn.
One small piece each of bbq pork, roast chicken and orange chicken.
A small portion of "NY style chicken salad".
And a small portion of tomato/cucumber salad.
I'll be drinking a Nantucket Nectar brand Half & Half (lemonade and iced tea, also known as an Arnold Palmer).

In my quest for further sustenance and desperate need for more caffeine, I went to the always reliable au bon pain for a wrap (fields and feta), a cookie (english toffee) and then impulse bought chocolate covered espresso beans. While I'm not a coffee drinker, those little guys aren't offputting and should get the job done.

Hater, glad you could join us. Sorry about your black bean embarrasment. That should be a topic someday, "Most embarrasing Lunch experiences". I've had a few.

And Ethics, sounds like you had two lunches today. Kudos!
