or, Thursday for those of you who don't have Friday off (yippee for Summer Hours!).
I'm hungry. Yesterday's lunch was filling, and by the time I got hungry again, around 9pm, I had to scavenge around the freezer for something edible. I went to bed disappointed, and as I'm not a breakfast eater, I'm Starvin' Like Marvin'. Here's the scenario: It's only 11, I'm meeting a friend for Happy Hour & sushi at 5:30. I want something filling, but not too filling because I didn't work out this morning and had meatloaf and mashed potatoes yesterday.
I'm going to wait for an hour or so to eat, but I feel that today's meal warrants some thought.
Inspire me, people. What's for lunch?

Ethics I think a soup and sandwich might be in order. I am at a conference and will be having the conference catered rubber chicken lunch. I'm hoping it's at least buffet style, but I'm not holding my breath.
Soup. We could have a whole topic on soup. To me, today seems a bit warm (and sunny) for soup. Plus, I generally find soup to be weird.
On the other hand, there are days when nothing but soup will do. These days are usually rainy and cold, though.
Though, the fine people downstairs have gazpacho on offer today.
Soup is an interesting thing. It's funny how it's not necessarily on the lunch radar, 100% of the time, it only seems to be there on certain days. Are there people for whom this is different?
I'm contemplating the 4 cheese grilled cheese w/ tomatoes, downstairs. Perhaps with gazpacho, on the side.
Ethics, that sounds like a near perfect order. What to drink?
Well, now I'm thinking BLT instead of all that cheese. For drink, I'm going w/ the sweet, sweet embrace of my beloved Diet Coke.
I tried to stay away for a while, knowing how it's just not good for me and that our relationship had neared a dangerous place of near dependence on my part. This one sided need isn't healthy, but there is nothing like the say it dances across my tongue when times are rough.
I'm back in the arms of Diet Coke, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
So yeah. BLT, gazpacho and the nectar of the Gods.
slice of cheddar on the BLT? wheat toast?
heavy mayo?
That's how I eat them.
of course if you added some avocado you'd be playing in the high country.
CSR, I think that is a discussion for another day. So I will hold back the bile and vitriolic rant I want to send your way. It is Lunchtime. A time of peace.
We have your Vernor's where I come from - in fact, it's the eastern-most location of widespread availability. I have to say, it's not really my thing - but I respect it. But it just doesn't have the hold over me that my sweet mistress does.
I went w/ the Grilled Cheese and Tomatoe after all. But shook it up, with the addition of crab chips. I'm feeling all local today.
Skipped the gazpacho. Just wasn't in the mood when I got down there.
By the way, my post to CSR was in reference to his anti-mayo comments. Vernors is about as close to a perfect soft drink as you can get. Grape soda is a close second. Ethics you almost had the order of the week but I think switching to the crab chips might lose it for you.
"Order of the Week"?! Haven't we already discussed the dangers of turning lunch into a gladiatorial competition?! I can't bear the thought of a weekly Lunch-Off between members of my brethern.
And crab chips rock. That's all there is to it.
If Vernor's could love me the way Diet Coke does, then we could talk. But without that seductive caffeine, it's nothing.
There is no official competition yet, but we must continually strive for that perfect lunch order. And thusly we should recognize our brethren (and sistren) when we feel they have come close to that level of perfection, which may ultimately be unattainable.
mmmmmm... crab chips.
I understand that we must always strive for excellence, but I've got to get on my relativist's fence for a moment.
Some days, grilled cheese and tomato soup IS lunch perfection. But others, only a greek salad is going to do. Lunch excellence is something that's fluid, and very, very personal.
While my crab chips and 5 cheese (yes folks, I said 5 - count em' - FIVE cheeses) grilled w/ fresh heirloom tomatoes is perfect for me today, tomorrow, it may be Pho or Pad Thai, or a burrito or a meatball sub. And for you, josephus - well, you've got that thing with the tuna melts. I've yet to have a day where I thought, "Ethics, what's for lunch? Ah yes, a tuna melt."
I say it is wrong, yes WRONG, to sit in judgment on this issue. Better to discuss, share opinions and best practices, and support the decisions - good or bad - of our brothers and sisters.
Be about the love, people.
I am most definently about the love, and I don't see this as a compettition. I just think that we can come to an agreement at times on a particular lunch order that shines. One that gives all of us, who appreciate Lunch's intricacies, an opportunity to stand up and offer special commendation. A lunch order that reminds us all why we are here discussing what I believe to be the most important meal of one's day.
The order itself may not be what makes it stand out (though that is a big part) perhaps it is how that order makes you feel, or how that order took into account the other ordering opportunities and passed them over.
We need to discuss this more thouroghly but I believe we all will agree that there are orders that stand apart and those orders deserve recognition.
You make a valid point, Josephus.
As long as it's all meant to inspire each other to new heights of noontime pleasure, then I'm all for it.
I do fear that I'm going to get fat now that I've got a forum to wax rhapsodic about the joys of lunch, and a group of folks who are equally - if not more- enthusiastic about the midday meal.
Well, I think that Vernor's and rum is terrific. And, by itself, it's tasty.
I think it's a little overpowering for food.
But let me tell you a story from my childhood...
As a little girl, whenever I got sick, my favorite thing to drink was Tom Tucker Mint Gingerale. If that wasn't available (which, it almost always was because my mom was awesome when I was sick), my next go-to was regular ginger ale. Well, one day, my mom wasn't home to take care of me, and my dad was stuck with the task.
I asked for Tom Tucker, and he brought me all that we had - Vernor's. Now, imagine if you will, being sick, and expecting that sweet elixir of the mint gingerale, only to be shocked with the bitter bite of Vernors!
Ever since then, it's been a tough road with Vernor's. It's like the age old skittles/m&m's switcheroo - both are good, but when you're expecting one, and get the other, you might as well be eating rabbit poop.
