Home of the Pirates, Steelers, & 2007 OWFL Conference

Before the fire alarm went off at Bravo Bravo; before Lord A brought $15 worth of $1 Chicken McNuggets; and before the Cap City OWFL crew turned a Happy Hour into a bender, preliminary discussions concerning the first Conference of 2007 took place.

Unlike most people in Cap City, we want to open this up to discussion before we come to a binding decision. So, Please weigh in on the details of the Pittsburgh Conference today.

Proposed Dates:
Weekend of March 17th
Weekend of February 17th

The committee endorses the weekend in March, which is in fact St. Patrick's day, however the weekend in Feb is President's day and a 3 day weekend for most.

Rooming Arrangements:
HaterTot has generously offered up an ancestral home for our use.

Bring air matteresses, cots, tents sleeping bags, or whatever you'd like to sleep on. Large back yard is available if the weather allows.

Agenda:
The housing venue is close to many eateries that typify the Iron City so once you get there, there will be little driving around.

We will eat in, eat out and drink all weekend and discuss Lunch of course.

Why go to a Conference?:
Don't you wonder what the people you spend your whole work day chatting with actually look like in person?

Please let this community know your thoughts, comments, questions or concerns on the Conference today and after things are sorted a seperate post will go up, hopefully on the sidebar, that will list the details of this special OWFL event.

Please don't get side tracked by the topic at hand and forget to tell us what you're thinking about having for lunch today.

Also, Please let us know if you will be able to go, if you won't be able to go, or if you have to wait and see.

As I mentioned (prematurely) yesterday, MamaQuake (a.k.a. The Other Plate) is in town March 11 so I'm good for either weekend. The February date is a three-day weekend for me, so I suppose I would pref that.

Either way, I'm in there like swimwear. I'll even drive.

helio: We can even leave in time for wings and ass-blowing in south Jersey.

Not sure what's for lunch today. I have a going away party at Maggiano's tonight. I think I want lunch to be minimal to leave some room.

We'll see. I may be jobless at that point. Today my company announced the sell off of all African assets. Today we also have our presentation about why we (International Infrastructure Staff) are important to the company.

:)

Irony aside, we will have to see. If it was in Cap City I might have been able to swing some interviews.

Josephus said...

Diz are you an African asset?

Josephus said...

j/k diz. I hope everything works out.

LizTurtle said...

I vote for March. Weather should be better & I don't get any holidays off until Memorial day, so that don't affect me. In addition to not liking black people, my company also does not like Washington or Lincoln. Or any president. I can't do February.

St. Patty's day!!! Woooooo! And I could even take a day off, if anyone else might be thinking about that . . . .

Hope you still have a job, Diz!

Today is the remnants of my jambaliar. Thank god it's almost over.

m said...

good luck diz.

i'll be in MO at that point in february so march is better. I'd give you an 85% that i would be there with bells on and a deepfryer in tow

Heliocentric said...

If this helps you make a decision on attendance then the weekend would have folks from Cap City driving about 8 hours over the weekend, Windy City folks doing 14 hours of driving, a dozen hours to get there and back from the Big Apple, 43 hours to make the round trip from Houston and 51 hours from Billings.

dizkonekdid said...

I won't be driving Helio .. thanks though. As for the job ... meh ... who really cares? I valuable enough to put elsewhere ... and yes Jo, Africa was about 50% of my job. China, Brazil, and southern Europe are all that is left.

We shall see.

I'm in for whenever the PITT trip is as long as it's not APRIL 4th.

In honor of Pittsburgh what kind of sandwich should I get for lunch?
Where's HT?

Diz you were in charge of about half the planet so I think you've still got alot of real estate to cover.

Heliocentric said...

Great question Peep.

I have no car, but If your attendance is valuable enough to anybody, we'll get a ride to the airport for you.

(your attendance is valuable to me, but not enough for me to go out and buy a car.)

Josephus said...

I think the airport is fairly close to Granmama HT's place so someone will definitely be there to pick up the Chicago crew.

Heliocentric said...

Jo, since my people are from Philly, I in general refuse to recognize anything that comes from the PITT. I know, I know, maybe my eyes will be opened after going there, but ancient prejudices persist. Like when the US house only passed HR 39 by 414 votes to 1

I say you fuck it and get a cuban sammie

LizTurtle said...

Ha ha! I laugh. And yet - wtf? Doesn't congress have anything better to do??

Jo, get a sandwich with a side of slaw & fries & when you get back to your office, put them on the sandwich.

HaterTot said...

I'm here, just sort of busy this morning.

Either weekend works for me.

My grandmother's house is so close to the airport that the county paid for her to get a new roof, new insulation, new windows and exterior doors and a new HVAC unit a couple of years ago so that she never had to open her windows again. Pick up service is no problem, and the airport is 5 minutes away. I believe that Southwest is now flying to Pitt, so that's a low cost option.

I have no idea how much furniture will be in the house by then, so sleeping bags, air mattresses, tents (weather permitting) are a must.

I'll have my dad arrange for a keg to be there when we arrive and a deli tray from his friends' Italian deli.

There is plenty of parking in the driveway. We can also park at my dad's - there's no street parking in Moon Twp.

There are a lot of places to eat right in Moon, but we'll want to take a trip or two into the city for Primanti's, Fatheads and other "dahntahn" fare. We can either do a designated driver, or get a service for the night. Or, if we're just going for lunch, it's not an issue.

If people are interested, we could also go bowling one night. I suggest this because it's just so damn Pittsburgh, though the place we used to go has become "Paradise Island Bowl and Beach Club" (beach is a bit of a stretch) so I don't know what that's like.

Also, on Saturday, we could go to the Parade. Parading frightens me, but I can take one for the team and go.

Jo - something with sausage. Kielbasa if it's available.

Josephus said...

LT, excellent plan, and I just realized that I am okay to wit for Pittsburgh food until I get there.

Lunch will be a ham & chicken club from Best Sandwich Place.

Josephus said...

Sounds like peep, miso and dipso should buy their tickets asap.

Heliocentric said...

Best Sandwich Place? Is that the joint next to the Borders?

They do make a good sammie.

Earthquake said...

I'll add myself to the list of willing airport-picker-uppers.

And, helio, that might be the only vote Jack Kingston (who represents my home district) has made since I turned 18 that I have no problem with at all.

Sitting here in the lunch hour, I'm thinking perhaps I'll have a little something after all. Screw preparing for a big dinner.

HaterTot said...

I just ordered pho with my coworkers. Yay pho!

HaterTot said...

Kiki - it is, Helio was quoting roundtrip driving times. I was confused too. I've made it from Chicago to Pittsburgh in 6 hours, but I really had to pee when I got there.

m said...

two slices of pizza today, greasy, wonderful, transfatastic jersey pizza.

LizTurtle said...

I think he meant 14 hours back & forth, Kiki. I sure as hell ain't driving 8 hours from Cap City one way!

LizTurtle said...

Um, yeah. What HT said. Are you going to bring your monkey?!?! I think we should all bring our respective monkeys.

EEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

GimletGirl said...

Because work is kicking my a$$ between now and the end of April, I'm an enthusiastic maybe. But the February date would increase the likelihood of my attendance.
If I do go, I'll be happy to take any carless Cap City folks w/ me and to pick people up from the airport.
Lunch today was a salad from the caf. It went down fine, but I'm a little concerned about digestion. That's always a danger w/ the work caf.

Josephus said...

delicious ham & chicken club from Best (helio yes it is the joint next to Borders). I haven't been there in 4 months and the sandwich lady remembered my order.

sigh...

Earthquake said...

Went with a pita from the mediocre joint downstairs. It has tuna salad and avocado and sprouts and stuff in it.

And pretzels.

Cranberry juice to drink.

Heliocentric said...

I am postponing lunch at the Institution Cafe'. There is a conference in da house and the place is full of retards who don't know the procedure in there, so I figured it'd be easier if I just wait. Unlike many places I've been and am hearing from all y'all (the appropriate plurl of y'all, back me up Texas) the in-house cafe' here is real good. Today, I'm thinking I'll have the pecan crusted Trout... if there's any left after the retards leave.

HaterTot said...

I would once again like to reiterate how odd it is that you are all descending upon my hometown in what appears to be March. And that we are all going to sleep in my grandmother's house, in sleepover fashion.

HaterTot said...

Kiki, Grandma Tot was not a nice lady. The only reason I'd like to summon her is to see the look on her face to see all of us debauched in her house. THAT would be priceless.

I think I have a Ouija Board at my dad's house. I'll run over there and pick it up...

LizTurtle said...

HT, I have a Ouija board I can bring!!! Oooh, and then we can play 'light as a feather, stiff as a board' and bloody mary! Weeeeeeeee!!!!!!

LizTurtle said...

??? How does one cook brussel sprouts in an office kitchen? She nuked em or something? Do you have an oven or something?

Anonymous said...

I've already been to lovely Pittsburgh twice in the last year as a tourist. I even had a nice meal with Hatertot whilst there.

Not sure if me and the wifey and the kids are able to do a third Pitt-Trip. But i'll keep thinking on it.

LizTurtle said...

brussel sprouts are gross. i don't care if they are leftovers or fresh. ugh.

LizTurtle said...

Ha ha - the brussel sprout cooking thing reminds me of last week - I was in the kitchen with the guy who sits behind me & you could tell someone had just used the microwave. So just making conversation, I was like "I can't decide if that smells good or bad" & the guy was like "That's my lunch!" So I was embarrassed & I said "Oh. Um. What is it?" & he says "leftover marinated steak & potatoes" & I go "Oh, that sounds good!" & then he goes ". . . and cabbage." Aha! The culprit is found out. He still didn't seem to get that cabbage stinks when you cook it. Am I the only who thinks that?

Josephus said...

We had some roasted brussel sprouts with dinner last night. Seasoned with a little salt and pepper, olive oil and maggi seasoning. pretty damned good.

HaterTot said...

I am ridiculously fond of brussels sprouts. Growing up, they were by far my favorite veggie. I liked to imagine they were baby cabbages, and I would make them talk to each other in high, squeaky voices before I'd eat them. My mom and I would fight over them, and then carefully count them out between us, so no one got more than the other. I love them in soup, frozen (steamed, with butter), roasted - what have you.

I love you baby cabbages!

(brussels sprouts aren't even actually in the cabbage family, but I don't care)

Lady A said...

I heated up brussel sprouts last week at the office. You just pop those little suckers in the microwave and voila!

Either weekend would work, but if it is in March there is a possibility that I could be way broke if I wind up going to vegas earlier that month...or even broker if I elope with K-Fed...

Lady A said...

I had a salad that I bought from trader j's and I topped it off with a some tabouli.

Earthquake said...

I like the idea of this conference around St. Patrick's Day, even if I don't like the idea of drinking green Iron City.

I wonder if Ill Mitch is going be able to make it.

Brian said...

Brussel sprouts suck.

Kirk, bring some headphones if you do ride with us as Kiki has an Erasure problem.

HaterTot said...

Erasure is not a problem. Of course, I'm not going to be in the car, and I'm sure it will Offend Peep's hipster sensibilities. But, when you get to Pittsburgh, I'd be in for an Erasure dance party.

Brian said...

if by "dance party" you mean "intervention" then I'm down.

[Lunch was a chicken fajita quesadilla from Taco Fresco..."healthy" aka no sour cream or guac]

LizTurtle said...

Anonymity violation!!!!!!!

LizTurtle said...

And dammit. Now I have 'A Little Respect' in my head.

HaterTot said...

I try to discover
A little something to make me sweeter
Oh baby refrain from breaking my heart
Im so in love with you
Ill be forever blue
That you give me no reason
Why youre making me work so hard

Hey, anyone know where I can get frozen custard (preferably soft serve) in Old Town? (I'm looking at you, LT)

LizTurtle said...

Are those the words?? Huh.

To be upfront: I have no idea what the difference is between ice cream & frozen custard. What is it, more egg yolks or something? Anyways. There's the ice cream store (can't remember the name for the life of me) down on the first block of King St. I think they have soft serve, too. But they have a million flavours (or at least as many as that corporate sell-out Baskin Robbins). It's between 100 King & O'Connells, or whatever that new irish pub is called.

If you are willing to drive and to wait until 2/1 (closed for Christmas break), you can go over to the Dairy Godmother in Del Ray. It's on the main drag, same block as St. Elmo's coffe shop.

HaterTot said...

Hmmm... neither of those two spots is close enough for me to go get it right now. And yes, LT, it's the eggs.

LizTurtle said...

Yeah, I got nothing else for you. There's a Wendy's up Washington a few blocks. You could get a frosty.

Earthquake said...

A vanilla frosty?

SUMMARY

OK Bloggers. I'll whip up a summary and get details for a side bar post.

But let it hereby be declared

(Oh Shit, i almost forgot, Happy Pie Day!)

the OWFL conference will take place in Moon Co. PA On the weekend of March 17th.

Rides from the airport are easy to provide, rides to the city are plentiful (from Cap City anywise)

Furniture will be at a premimum, bring sleeping arrangements.

We'll be not driving around town so nobody has to get bailed out of a gay steel workers jail

This will be a cheap weekend, and there will be a keg.

Word!

HaterTot said...

Helio should be a tv news reporter for his excellent wrap up skillz.

LT, I've never been to this DairyGodmother joint (or this place you call DelRay) but I looked at their website and it looks fantastic. I am eagerly awaiting the reopening!

LizTurtle said...

I completely forgot to comment on:
keg waiting for us? And a deli tray?? Papa Tot's the best!

Josephus said...

So watchdog and E-que are already out for The Pitt?

Does that mean shorty is out as well?

E-que explain yourself!

GimletGirl said...

Frozen custard is what my grandpa used to make for a living! It's the best. HT--I don't know if there's a Kohr Bros. in Alexandria, but if so they have softserve, it's awesome, and the Kohr Bros. themselves are distant cousins so they get my grandpa's stamp of approval. (He doesn't remember much, but he still knows his dairy products)
Dairy Godmother is yummy, and I haven't been in ages. I say a field trip is in order when I return from my island (work) getaway!

HaterTot said...

Um, wow.

WWTCD?

LizTurtle said...

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!! Good link, HT!

Another bachelor party? Eque, you have to stop letting your friends/family members getting married 4-6 weeks after our OWFL conferences.
