The Incredible Edible Bread
Ahhhh...bread...soft, chewy, crusty bread. The essential ingredient to making the ever important sandwich, a staple amongst most lunchers on a daily basis. Without bread, would our lunching be the same? Would our favorite sandwich be our favorite sandwich without it?
And the variety!! The variety of bread out there is just amazing nowadays (loafs, rounds, pitas, bagels, wheats, whites, whole grain, beer etc.) and so many specialty sandwiches depend on using a specific type of bread. Would a reuben be a reuben without two slices of rye? Would a cheesesteak be the same if it were between two slices of wheat instead of a sub roll? What would a gyro taste like on white bread instead of pita? What kind of bread makes it or breaks it for you? Have you ever had a disappointing lunch because it was made with the wrong type of bread?
So let's talk about bread today my friends and of course WFL?

I always wanted to try the Ergot. That was the mold or fungus that grows on wheat, rye or bread in the winter and can cause hallucinations. I have heard that it produces an acid like experience, but highly doubt it.
I'd totally kick it with a grilled cheese on moldy Ergot bread and trip balls and accuse everybody of being a witch.

I remember Bimbo bread. I think it was the Mexican equivilant of wonder bread. that shit was great, we would take a slice and peel off the crust and then smash it up into a ball, then you can put jelly on it.

Sometimes when I was old enough I would get to go and wait in the bread line. you meet everybody there and when it cold, which is september - May body heat from line makes everybody slight warmer and builds sense of community.
Soviet bread taset like it have the saw dust and chinese newspaper in it. later found out no newspaper, but acceptable ammount of saw dust get in.
I'm baaaaaaack! Ah, so good to be done with exams - I can take my life off hold . . . oh, that's right, I don't have a life. Ah well. I'm looking forward to Sat nite. And happy belated b-day Lady A!
Undoubtedly, the worst (the worst! Ever!!) is a hamburger on regular bread. Like that Eddie Murphy routine. No hot dog buns is fine - I'll eat it bunless, but no hamburger buns? Shudder.
Man, I wish I had tuned in yesterday - I had the diplomat father, so I was the new kid every 2-3 years. It was always easier moving overseas b/c there was always someone whose best friend had just left & you could slide right into that void. Coming back here was awful (although NoVa is probably better than some middle America place).
Lunch today - I dunno. But someone just emailed me a bunch of Quizno's coupons. Maybe I'll get the bread bowl of soup. Hm.
I don't know anything about Bimbo's balls or anything. But I love going to HEB Central Market and getting a huge bagette of garlic rye or sour dough .... mmmm Mores the better if you hollow one out and bake it with your fav soup. with a bunch of cheese on the top .. and maybe some chopped shallots on the top.
Today I will run in Houston's "winter" weather (51 Degrees F).
Oddly enough, I had a rather lengthy debate with myself standing in front of the bread wall just last night. I wound up going with some nine-grain variety that gets the job done, but it doesn't show much imagination. Which is to say, I won't be buying it again anytime soon.
I have told the story about that fateful morning in San Francisco - lo! these many years ago - when I was introduced to the over-medium egg and sourdough toast. In addition to my previously discussed shift in attitude toward egg preparation, that event kicked off a serious love affair with the sourdough.
I just booked my flight for Thanksgiving in Chicago, where I have no doubt I will have at least two or three breakfasts that consist of heavily buttered "Grandma's Bread," which is essentially a lemon-tinged white bread with white raisins in it that my grandmother has been making every Saturday since before she knew the stain of womanhood, as she is fond of telling me.
Today for lunch, I have a sandwich of sliced Bloody Mary Pork Tenderloin (which I marinated and baked on Sunday; I really REALLY want to find something that tastes fantastic when marinated in a spicy bloody mary.) with Canadian Sharp cheddar on aforementioned nine-grain. Some stoneground wheat crackers with scallion and parsley hummus. Probably water to chase.
And, in case you're worrying that it sounds like a respectably healthy lunch, rest assured that I'm having a dinner of bourbon tonight. I love it when the Iceberg comes to town...
First, thanks, Blogger for letting me view OWFL at lunchtime for the first time in a week and a half. I was starting to take it personally.
Today for lunch I am having a salad, with a "Pain au lait" roll on the side, which tastes exactly like a slightly less sticky King's Hawaiin Bread. King's Hawaiin Bread is awesome, even if it bears only a passing resemblence to bread.
In fact, my favorite thing about bread is its versatility, it can be hearty, savory or sour and even stuffed with cheese or meat. Or it can be the perfect sweet breakfast/desert treat with lots of sugary goodness or cinnamon and spices. Though the whole carb think kinda sucks.
bread is good.
and I am hungry.

and on a croissant no less.
I always forget how much I love pumpernickel. It's dark and chewy and delicious. It's really good as the boat in a meat boat dip ("meat" is chipped beef, mixed with mayo and sour cream I think).
im a carb-o-holic. whenever i go to the supermarket, i always have like 8 forms of carb in my cart. i always have on hand at home some pita, multigrain loaf for sammies, tortillas, some kind of pasta, and rice.
my favorite bread is olive loaf or challah. (HOLLA!)
i had an early lunch at 1130am and may dig into some of a coworkers chili in a few. but then, i am getting pho with lady a and HT. it'll be awesome in this cold weather.
Oooh, yeah, good point, Lisa Haiku. The best breads are banana bread, cranberry nut bread, banana bread with choco chips, lemon poppyseed bread, etc . . . .
I bought a breadmaker a few years ago before I moved out of my parents' house. We would make fresh bread every couple of days & have it on the delay cycle so we'd wake up to the smell of fresh baking bread. Yum. I decided to make pumpernickel, b/c I had never liked it & I thought "Maybe if it I have it fresh baked right out of the machine, it'll be good." I had 1/2 a slice & gave the rest to my mom. Yuck. Even loaded up with butter & honey or something it was too heavy. Ah well! Lucky my mom loves it or it would have gone to waste. But give me a good 14-grain with chunks of . . . grain? in it anyday! Yum!
Yeah, I often make loaves with chunks of grain in them.
Oh, and bravo notwitty. I had forgotten a lot of that! The only lines I could remember crystal clear are "Bettew dan McDonald??" and "Well, this isn't McDonald's burger. This is a houseburger."
Totally got the Quizno's soup in a bread bowl. Thanks LT that might be the first time I have committed to something on OWFL, then actually followed through and got it.
OK, I got the French... I mean Freedom chicken & Broccoli soup, which was suspicioussly similar to a Broccoli Chedded with chunks of Quizno's chicken tossed in. the bread Boule was toasted and they hollowed it out, filled it with soup, and topped it with cheese, then they put the bread lid back in place, and some of the cheese and much of the spice was absorbed by the lid, which was a great little side to the main soup and bowl course.
I dug it, and with all the spice, I think there was a bit of garlic in there, I finally have something that will keep all the girls at this temp assignment off of me. I just let them get close and hit them with the garlic bread, and wham! now they're admiring me from afar.
It's tough being this pretty.
I meant hit them with the gralic breath, but if that doesn't work, i imagine hitting them with garlic bread would work too.
Mikey! You got the same lunch as me!! I also, found it quite tasty & filling! Mmmmm . . . freedom chicken. It was a bit too salty, though. Not even 'a little' too salty. It was bordering on a lot too salty. Still tasty, though. And mmmmm . . . cheesy garlic bread bowl . . . yum.
Notwitty, that first machine I had was an Oster, which was great. The one I have now is a Breadman, which also seems to work great - the thrill of fresh bread every day wore off & I did Atkins for awhile, so I haven't used it nearly as much I used the first one. Oh, and I got rid of the first one b/c I was moving back from Bermuda & was trying to lighten the load, not because it broke down or anything. I highly recommend it, though! Oh, but don't make garlic-herb bread to wake you up. It smells good when you know it's bread, but until you wake up & remember that, it just smells like bad breath. Ew.
Oh, and I have an OWFL request - my mom had her gall bladder out today (what gall!) & I'm going to go over tonight & make something for dinner, which, most likely won't get eaten tonight (at least by her - maybe by me & Dad), so I need some suggestions for something that a) is homey, b) isn't too spicy or greasy, and c) will keep until tomorrow night. I'm thinking some kind of casserole, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone know someone who had their gall bladder out & what they could eat immediately after? Thanks, guys!
In light of lunch today, It sounds to me like you're describing soup, but you don't even realize it LT.
Homey, no spicy, will keep.
Plus chicken noodle is a cure for every ailment.
Therefore, MikeySunshine reccomends Chicken Noodle Soup.

Having the Turkey and guac wrap right now. It is almost never cold enough in Houston for hot sammys and soup (especially when the two are kinda smashed together into a Soup Boule).
Fresh fruit with the sweetened yogurt to dip in.
Not one but 2 hot oatmeal raisen cookies ... the girl at the sandwich counter is sweet on me.
LT - notWitty is right .. clear liquids that are fat free ... vege broth with soft bread (like LC's Challah HOLLA!!)

So I'm thinking I'm going to make mushroom barley soup. It doesn't sound too greasy (like a lot of these other soups with half & half or cheese). Although I'm still sort of thinking about this chicken soup verde - it has just 1/4 cup parmesan in the whole thing, which kind of sounds like it could be ignored or just added on afterwards. Hmmm . . . must think.

Notwitty is right--you're mom's going to be on a clear liquid diet, unless things have changed drastically since my grandmother had her gallbladder out.
But maybe you can make some soup for you and your dad and freeze the leftovers in individual portions for your mom. That'll be something nice for her to have once her diet expands.
yummmm bread! I like sourdough, pumpernickel, whole grain, white, wheat, pita, you name it.
Oddly, I don't like Rye generally, but love it on a reuben, same goes for swiss, I don't like swiss, but put all those major ingredients together that I hate and you've got a gold mine there.

Aaaaah, Jello. Good call. She said that her doctor said she could eat whatever she wanted, so it's not like she'll have restrictions, excepting in what won't make her throw up. So I think I'll make the mushroom barley soup (calls for garlic, onions, sherry & soy sauce, but I think I'll reduce a lot of those portions), and maybe by the time she feels like eating any the soup flavours will be all melded together. Perrrrrfect. Yum. Now I'm getting hungry for raspberry Jello.
Is that what a Monte Cristo (not Carlo) is? I thought it was a whatever sandwich (reuben?) where the whole thing was deep-fried. It always sounded ungodly & sinful to me. And somehow I've never had one - probably b/c it's like 800 grams of fat per. God, that sounds good, though.

I don't think it is freedom toast proper. I think it's just egg, no vanilla, sugar, cinnamon or cream of any sort.
But deep frying a ruben sounds pretty good too.

i've spent the day accomplishing nothing in a department meeting 31 miles from my home office and apparently productivity. so before reading everyones and responding in some form of hilarity:
for lunch we went out to chinese and i had the general tso special wiht fried rice and happiness.
i could eat chinese every day!
oh shite! in terms of bread, i love ALL indian bread products with Porri topping the list. its a giant puff filled with steam and often fried and sexy.

Also I read yesterday's post where you said you'd go out and Hack at lunch. I never kicked in high school, but the one group I was a part of in College was the Footbag club. We got an official charter from the school, but lost it after one semester because I mean, honestly... who's going to join a footbag club? Stoners and hippies. Who's notoriously unreliable? As a former Mexico dweller, I loved all things Bimbo.
My favorite was bimonbuelos, which was a dough like thing spun into pinwheels, deep fried till it was golden brown, and then covered in sugar.
Awesome. I used to tear into Bimbo's all the time in mexico!
I think if pumpking bread can be considered bread, then sopapillas are, too. And both are yummmmm. Man, we used to go to this mexicano place when we visited my grandparents in southern TX - they were huge and fresh out of the fryer. Mmmmm . . . .

Ahhh Meijers. I remember a story from a friend where they were walking around Meijers while tripping, and they came across the automotive section where there was a steering wheel.
