When the Czarina asked me to be the Special Events coordinator in her administration, I was happy to accept. Mostly because I don't have a real or actual job, so the responsibility of coordinating things really gets me up and going in the morning... well it's more like it gets me up and gives me a reason to put on pants... which I still haven't done yet today.
As Special Event coordinator, I assume it is my role to get information and details posted for all to enjoy.
The first event of this administration should natrually be an innauguration and I propose that alcohol be involved. For discussion, I throw out the suggestion of a Happy Hour at some BB place in downtown Capital City as the site for this celebration. I personally like Buffalo Billiards, but I know there is always momentum towards Bravo Bravo. In your comments today, please address your thoughts on this special event. (I hate alcohol, I hate the new Czarina, I am tired of Bravo, Bravo, I'll be out of town, I don't have a job and therefore no income, I live in Houston and can't make it on such short notice, I'll be there at 3:00...Whatever the case may be)
And for discussion, I submit to you..."What does it take to make lunch a special event for you."
I am sure there are those among us who would say that lunch is by definition special, and that's fine, but the question stands. I know that back in middle school all it took to make lunch a special event was the inclusion of pizza. As we mature, like in college for example, what makes lunch a special event is when somebody else picks up the check. Nowadays, a simple lunch where the food is good, the company and conversation are interesting and there is no line for the Tilt-a-Whirl qualifies as a special event for me.
So as you tell us what is for lunch today, please also let us know what would make it less of a meal and more of a special event.

lunch is special, but made even more special when at least 2 or more DC OWFLers can dine together. that's what i constitute as a special event lunch.
today, no telling what i will have. maybe i'll polish off last week's pasta salad if it's still in the fridge. i think i have some random goodies in there.
A special lunch for me these days is usually when real china and flatware is used, and I don't just unwrap a couple a dogs from wax paper. The dining companions can also make it special or the place. It's been quite awhile now, but I think back to Dipso and I having lunch at the Berghoff shortly before it closed and I think it was very special. I even stole a plate to commemorate the occasion.
I am so effing tired and I just found out that the 9:30 meeting that I had adjusted my flight schedule for was cancelled at 5:47 pm on Friday. Thus I could have gotten a normal amount of sleep last night instead of the two restless hours of prison sleep I got on rico's couch.
And another thing, why did every sports team I care about find a way to stink up the joint this weekend? My alma mater's football team was humiliated, my pro football team barely showed up and my baseball team decided to lose not just one, but ALL THREE games it played this weekend. And in a futile effort to see if if maybe I wasn't cursed by the sports Gods this weekend I just had the nerve to check my high school team's results from Friday night. They lost 33-7 at home versus HOLT. "Who?" you ask? "Exactly" sayeth the czar.
So the easy money is betting against me folks. Jump on this bandwagon now cause I'm a sure loser.
But that's not entirly true, because on Fridaday night A Tribe Called Quest blew my mind. My ears are still ringing. DC folks I am ready to go see them at Love on Friday should enough of you want to go.
But we were talking about lunch. If my portion costs over $25 it's special and if there are three people there with whom I don't work it is special.
Mikey I'm down for any coronation HH that isn't today.

Special lunch for Ultimo Dragon is magic time in week when you stop vomiting blood from match this week, but don't have to cut weight for match next week. Usually Thursday, Usually Mama's Tacos.

Tribe was phenomenal, better than I expected and I did expect quite a lot. I too would urge the DC'ers to go, especially considering your tickets are much cheaper than ours were. They were totally worth it, though.
Just a possible, though unlikely excuse for not celebrating the coup.

i wanna hot dog today. i had one last night that was full of garlic, and it was tasty. perhaps a trip to the famous dog dude downtown? where's he located again?
Argh. I don't know if I can make HH during the week - I'm probably in for Tribe on Friday, though. I should be done with packing up the moving truck. I'm sure I could be talked into a drink or two, though . . . .
Special lunches. Hm. During the work week, it's eating a sit-down meal somewhere, not just bringing it back. Although if I have to bring it back, sushi is special (b/c it's so expensive!). And usually if it's a sit-down meal out somewhere, it's b/c I have a non-co-worker to dine with. During the weekend - any lunch is special, b/c I tend to snack on weekends and not have an actual 'lunch'.
Lunch today? Not sure. But I'm starving. I have a coupon for a free drink & side from Quizno's. Maybe I'll use that. Too bad it's not good for QUIZNO'S SALADS. Ah well.
Thanks Mikey, because I actually do have a few bright spots to point to, of course thay are ALL in fantasyland, but they are victories none the less. Sunshine we are indeed neck and neck...I won't be watching the game with you as I need to sleep as soon as 5:00 rolls around. My fantasy baseball team has made it to the finals where we will face Dipso's team in a two week matchup.
And in my other fantasy football league I have a large and very safe lead and appear headed to 2-0.
Yeah, I could probably talk myself into Thurs @ Buff Bill. Actually, I'll need a drink b/c I'll have been packing all day.

And the deposed czar raises a good point about HH@BB. If we were to go to just one place, there would be no innaugural parade, so I like the idea of starting at bravo and parading to buffalo.
Lately, if I get more than 30 minutes for lunch that is a special event. But that qould require a job change which I am working on at the moment.

a special lunch is one where you don't have to be anywhere at any specific time immediatly following.. then you can get like seven courses over a two day period (or some other reasonable amount of time) and just relax and talk (or watch the other person eat)..

I admit it. A free lunch at a good restaurant is special. I don’t even care about the company–if I’m able to order what I want off of a menu that I would either not be able to afford or not be able to justify paying for, I’m psyched. I’m still thinking about that halibut I had a trattoria #10 a couple weeks ago.

I'm going to have a bowl of smart start now. Oh! I went to the grocery store yesterday for a couple of items. I got home and there was a package of fresh blueberries in my bag. I checked the receipt. Nope. Didn't pay for them. So the smart start's going to be extra special this week.

Sunshine, you’ve inspired me today. I’m implementing a new lunching system design to proactively create “special lunches.” It’s pretty simple, but here’s how it works.
My lunch cap each day is $7.25. (This is the cost of a two char dog special at the Gold Coast Dogs. Actually, it's $7.27, but they're very anti-penny, god bless 'em). If I don’t spend the entire $7.25, the extra amount goes into the big red plastic cup on the shelf over there. E.g., today I went to Subway and got the 6” special (turkey and ham). It was only $2.75. $7.25 - $2.75 = $4.50 in the kitty.
I don’t expect a $4.50 contribution every day, but the pot will definitely grow so that, occasionally, I can go splurge on, say, the halibut at Trattoria #10 or, who knows, maybe go belly up at some steakhouse bar and have a couple lobster tails and a pint. Or, OR, maybe go get chicken fingers for lunch with mamon and Mr. Cocktail some weekend!!!

I bought a carton for my friend in NYC & I think I paid like $24 for it or something. But that was in May, so I could be wrong. I've never bought a carton before either, so maybe I'm way off.
In DC, the cheapest machines I've come across are $5. Which seems not too bad for machines in bars.
