BORED

Entertain me, OWFL! I am so bored here! I should be doing things like writing thank you notes to people I don't know to thank them for their kindness in my "family's" time of sadness, or some other such bs. Or, starting to clean out my grandmother's house in a more constructive way than, "Throw all of this shit out!" Or visiting old family friends and laughing about our decades-long obsession with little people. (more on wee ones in just a sec) However, I am sitting on my dad's couch in my pjs, with Mr. Dirty Mitts peacefully wheezing beside me, watching the Food Network and football. It looks like a nice day outside, but I don't feel like being out among the yinzers, even if it's not Game Day in the Steel City.

Last night though, I had what might have been the highlight of my trip, when I met up with the always fun and lovely Watchdog family at Fatheads on the Souside. (that's "the South Side" a Pittsburgh neighborhood, on the - you got it - south side of the city, across the Mon (Monongahela River) from Dahntahn (Downtown).) Having eaten earlier with my dad, I picked at the parm wings and shrooms, and admired the gusto with which WD and the older of the WD kids eat sandwiches bigger than my head. Actually, WD only consumed about 1/3 of his Fuddwich, with the kids firmly outeating all of us. Anyhoo, I was proud of my fellow Pittsburghers' collective behavior in not giving the head-to-toe MSU clad WD family a hard time, though Pitt's loss at their hands likely played a role in keeping the Yinzers in check.

So, are there any other OWFLers out there today????? I'm dying for some entertainment. Yesterday afternoon I did some shopping to take advantage of the Macy's sale and PA's lack of sales tax on clothing. But today, it's me, the couch, the dirty cat, and the tv. BOOOORRRIIINNNGGGGG (but better than the alternatives). So, what's everyone eating today? I had some cold pizza when I woke up, but nothing since. I might have a beer. Inspire me, OWFL!

ht: I got fuck-all for you today, although we have apparently had similar "mornings" thus far. I'm going to go see if this nice day is actually nice.

Then, I shall get drunk in it, either way.

I'm making Lady A's meatloaf today. Unfortunately, it will be sans spinach because Jewel decided to no longer carry fresh spinach until the e coli break out is over. I'm then going to make a batch of titty cakes for the office. If I still feel like cooking after that, I'm making Lady A's wings [prob the best I've ever had] and the hipster slaw so I can have them for lunch for a couple days. I'm making it my mission to make every recipe in the cookbook over the next couple weeks. Except for Miso's tuna sandwich, because I never eat that "stuff".

Ace of Cakes!

Uni, we are taking my friend from B'more up and going to stalk him one weekend soon. He will give you an apprentice job. If for no other reason than you are MUCH hotter than the bitches he currently employs. But, once he sees/tastes your cakes, multiplied by your hotness - I see a job opportunity in your future!

Watching Ace of Cakes makes me want to move back to Baltimore. Badly.

Also, I have made myself a cocktail. I find it interesting that my Effen Black Cherry has ice in it. It is nonetheless delicious with Odwalla Lemonade, which is sort of against my rules about mixing premium vodka with anything other than soda, or possibly tonic. I say sort of b/c flavored vodka, no matter how premium, and in the case of Effen Black Cherry, delicious, are immediately downgraded in my mind simply by virtue of the fact that they are flavored. (I'm happy to discuss infused vodkas at another time, which reminds me that we've not done a Russia House night in awhile. With colder weather around the corner, it seems that it's time for buckets o' vodka again.) Anyhoo, Effen Black Cherry + Lemonade is delicious.

Does anyone know how the new Fruity Cheerios are different than Froot Loops? Other than the Cheerios people claiming that theirs have fruit juice (uh... last I checked that was just a different kind of sugar. Duh.)

I hate Mario Batali, by the way. I'm watching Food Network Unwrapped and he's on right now. I don't care how good his food is, I hate that guy.

HOLY CRAP THE TWO HOT TAMALES ARE ON THE FOOD NETWORK!!!!!!!!!! IT'S SOME KIND OF REUNION DEALIO, AND THEY'RE DESIGNING ONE OF THEIR KITCHENS ON WHATEVER THAT SHOW IS WHERE THEY DESIGN KITCHENS.

Side Note: I always thought they were lesbians. But, apparently, it's far more sordid. The brunette was married to the blonde's husband before the blonde was. Weird.

I bought the fruity Cheerios because they were a dollar a box, and I must say I was sorely disappointed. They were like a cross between Cheerios and Froot Loops, but not nearly as good as either one. Kind of bland, not very fruity and not cloying enough sweet like a good sugar cereal should be. And they are not very healthy, either.

Meat loaf is done and I made mashed potatoes to go with it. Isn't there some kind of law or ordinance that requires you to make mashed potatoes with meat loaf? Delicious. Truly superior meat loaf. Hipster slaw is done and tasted delicious from the bit I sampled. Tittycakes are baked and cooling and will be frosted after I get some laundry started. Wings will be next, and I plan on making some stock out of the wing tips, a yellow onion, a carrot, celery, bay leaf and some peppercorns. The stock will probably be frozen after I scrape the fat off tomorrow, because I will have so much food in the fridge already.

I'm about to say something that's likely to make me very unpopular, but is supported by Jada's words: I hate Cheerios. I always have. Plain Cheerios, Honey Nut - all of 'em. Admittedly, I like shit like Apple Jacks and other sugary cereal, but there's more than that at play here. I had Honey Nut about a year ago, and was surprised at how good they were. So surprised that I broke one of my cardinal rules of grocery shopping and actually bought a box of cereal. Well, I don't have much time for breakfast, nor do I like to eat in the morning. So, I ate my first bowl one Sunday afternoon, and I tried to have my second the following week. Those fuckers were ALREADY STALE!!!!!! Bastards.

Growing up, we only had mashed taters w/ meatloaf if my mom made hers, which has gravy. But we usually made my "Award Winning" meatloaf, and had it with the side I served it with to win my little prize, fresh green beans drizzled with bacon fat, crumbled bacon and garlic, and a smidge of tarragon vinegar. No potaters.

I like plain Cheerios with sliced bananas or strawberries. Honey nut Cheerios not so much. The fruit ones are just neither here nor there and just a waste. I LOVE sugary kids cereal but rarely eat it because if I buy a box I just want to eat bowl after bowl of it until it is gone. And usually late at night, not for breakfast. If I eat cereal for breakfast it is either the aforementioned plain Cheerios with fruit or old fashioned oatmeal, the cook on the stove type, never the instant.

Tittycakes frosted. Has anyone else made these? Is it just me or does that recipe make A TON of frosting? Goddamn those things are good.

Wings are in the oven and smelling goooooood. The chicken stock is simmering on the stove top. Laundry is about to be pulled from the dryer.

I am tired and expect to sleep well tonight.

Cheerio's are good. They were just having a bad day. :-( I like the strawberry ones, something about the freeze-dried berries is reminiscent of the "marshmallows" in Lucky Charms. Yum! And I can pretend I'm being "healthy"!

Jada - I totally had that issue with the frosting, too!! In fact, I stopped at 3 cups of sugar, b/c it was getting to be too much for the bowl I was using!! Did you use it all? B/c I just made a cake with it, so I thought maybe you just don't need as much with a layer cake. I don't know. I haven't made cupcakes in years.

I had Red Hot & Blue at the Nats game! Thank you Bonbon for the ticket. Mmmmm. Red Hot & Blue is awesome. And there was the cutest baby sitting in front of us with her parents. She was clearly close to a year old (not quite walking yet - maybe 10 months ish?) and she looked like Peter Boyle. In spite of that, she was a cutie! And flirty, too! I love flirty babies! I hate the ones that just stare at you when you wave. Stupid mean babies.

When you back in town HT?

I drive back tomorrow, LT. I feel like I'll hardly be back at all though, as I start PUPPYsitting Th. night for Shorty and E-Que. Though, I'm looking forward to it. I'm taking Mr. Dirty Mitts with me, so he'll learn to make nice with the 2 cats and 2 dogs. I'm hoping The Bun... er... um... YOU KNOW... will come down this weekend to dog sit with me too - I hope it'll be like a little mini vacay, but my poor house is so neglected!

How was Jon Stewart, LT?

LT - I used the full 6+ cups of sugar when making the frosting, but I was overwhelmed at how much there was. I frosted each cupcake with a huge wallop of frosting then let them sit a bit, and I still had at least a 1/3 of it left. I came back and frosted them a bit more and then I ate a couple of huge spoonfuls. Which is saying a lot regarding the quality of this frosting, because in general I am not a frosting fan. Crean cheese frosting usually is my favorite, but this shit is masterful. Lady A is a genius. I've said it before that I'll eat anything she makes, but I'll go one step further and say I'll make any recipe that comes with her stamp of approval.

Make her meat loaf.
