Blog Business

Good Morning fellow What's for Lunchers,

Today's post is not going to be one of those fun and entertaining ones about TV or favorite lunch treats or Lunch with The Devil. It's not going to be replete with entertaining and clever pictures. Today we need to deal with some blog business that we needed to nail down at the conference but was circumvented by drinking, smoked meats, corn holing and drama. Besides, this might be a better forum because we will have a lasting record of everyone's opinion.

I think we have unanimously agreed that we want to move from Blogger to a new system, but before we do we should carefully consider our options and decide what we want from a new system. In order to do so, I have some questions for you to think about to help solidify what our needs and wants are.

1. What do you specifically dislike about blogger?

2. What are some features or services you would like to see the new site have?

3. What domain name would you like our home on the internet to have?

4. What kind of time and/or money investment are you honestly willing and capable of contributing to the transition?

Additionally, I think it would be great to have a clear and concise mission statement for the new blog. Currently, I think the subtitle functions as a mission statement of sorts, but that it should be more complete. If I am not mistaken, I believe a longer version of it exists somewhere. Am I right, Dipso? In order to write a mission statement that fully encompasses our collective goals and ambitions for The Original What's for Lunch, I would like to hear from everyone why lunch is so important to them that they regularly blog about it.

5. What does lunch mean to you?

6. Why blog about lunch?

If there are important issues or ideas that you have that are not covered by the topics I have enumerated above, please share them with us so your voice and concerns can be recognized. I understand that those questions can yield wieldy answers so don't feel compelled to respond them all at once, but please try to formulate a response to each at some point throughout the day.

And of course, What's for Lunch on Tuesday, bitches?

1. Blogger is unreliable.
2. -drop down menus for our side bar features
-the ability to post more pictures and artwork in different places(which we may have now)
-obviously I want to have the same ability for multiple posters
-the ability to one day post ads of our choosing
3. OWFL.com or theoriginalwhatsforlunch.com or originalwfl.com
4. a significant amount

More on #5 & 6 later.

1. I hate the sudden dead times of blogger, but I do have to say in it's defense that it is incredibly easy to use and intuitive. I would like to see our new software have the same ease of use.
2. I'd like an in-site search function.
Drop down menus.
The ability to post and comment via email.
Profiles for each of the contributors.
A "recent comments" list on the sidebar.
3. I like theoriginalwhatsforlunch.com too. Does anyone know if this available? I'd check but I can't right now.
4. I can contribute a fair amount of time and I know how to transfer our blogger site to a wordpress site so we won't lose all out archives and comments. If it is a different system, I'm not sure how much I can do. If we use dreamhost as our server, I can get it for about $25 bucks a year, which is very cheap.

I think I am going to have a PB&J with my homemade blackberry jam on 12 grain bread and some grapes today.

I forgot to say that I want the new system to have all of the current blog and comments transfered over. I don't want to completely start over.

The domain name is available at least according to the msn site I was directed to.

Says the annual registration fee is $35

So the only two "systems" (and these are the site operating systems right?) I have heard about are wordpress one that jada uses on her site and the tenseforms program that peep's buddy operates. Are these very similar or extremely different?
Are there a hundred other "systems" out there? I admit (again) to being confused about how it all works.
What are the steps involved, we register the domain name and then what happens?

Diz do you have any IT knowledge to offer?

I do know that we ABSOLUTELY want and need to be able to transfer all of our content from blogger.

Another thing the new site needs is a calendar right on the homepage.

1. What do you specifically dislike about blogger?

The long lines.

2. What are some features or services you would like to see the new site have?

Scratch'n'sniff.

3. What domain name would you like our home on the internet to have?

Something I already have bookmarked, like cnn.com or google.com.

4. What kind of time and/or money investment are you honestly willing and capable of contributing to the transition?

I am willing to contribute my massive arms for heavy lifting.

5. What does lunch mean to you?

Lunch is a deeply spiritual event for me each day where I have a chance to reflect on the input from my tastebuds and decide what I am doing for dinner.

6. Why blog about lunch?

Blogging about breakfast would be terribly boring since I eat cereal every morning and blogging about dinner would just be stupid.

Jada, thanks for getting the ball rolling on this so folks can begin to formulate any opinion on these matters if they want to. I would like to mention though, that if you really don't have an opinion on some of these things that is fine too. We do realize that a lot of you are here for simple entertainment during the work day, and that is one of the reasons why this is such a great place!

It has been acknowledged that most of us hate blogger because it just sucks and is unreliable and often jammed up. I believe it was discussed at the conference that some research was to be done about our options outside of blogger. Jada, I know you have wordpress covered but I think Peep still has some stuff he's looking into. I think having all of this info. in hand FIRST would be helpful in deciding which way we want to go because then we'll know exactly what our options even are.

Not to mention that HT probably is dealing with some issues in the P-burgh and she probably has a few more opinions on those matters than most of us combined!! :)

So, I'm thinking that the Blog Business should be one of the posts that we put on the side bar thingy where people can share their opinions/information if they have any.

1) i've only had problems on that one day.. but like ford, that was enough to make me hate them forever
2) as for the blogging, i would like to see the new site have the same features as blogger. I cannot think of many features for blogging beyond what is here that would be useful. In addition, there should be some type of integrated FTP with storage space so files (pictures/sounds) can be stored directly on the server. I would envision this as more of a complete website built around a blog... basically like any organization's website... about us, members, best of, calendar, etc..
3) www.dirtydirtysluts.com if it's not taken
4) for just pennies a day you can give this child a bowl of rice and shoes... i'll throw in as much as i'd give sally struthers..
5) lunch is a little gift to be given daily, a welcome break in the tumultuous disaster that is my waking life. It gallantly splits the day into waiting for lunch and fighting post-lunch narcolepsy.
6) cause chicks dig it.

As i am new, please discount all that you have read and choose what is most appropriate for the health of this micro-society you have created...

also, are we considering just moving to a diff prefab blogging system or setting up an entire website? Servered by one of our members or someone else’s server? Is there anyway this can pay off my student loans?

Lady A said...

sorry, didn't finish...

Anyways, so the Blog Business put on the side bar and is discussed and handled by those who decide to take a participating role. Would anyone object to a secondary post today strictly for WFL standard banter? I think it would be helpful to keep people's opinions and thoughts on "business" separate, that way if we need to go back to gather ideas it isn't filled up with day to day stuff.

Josephus said...

Lady A, that sounds like a good idea. This post is going to be important for quite awhile, no need to get it gummed up with eso-terrorism. I can add it to the sidebar. does someone want to put up another lunch only post?

1. Blogger often seems to freeze up, and sometimes posts are lost. Annoying!

2. Same services as now, but without the fuckups.

3. I'm with Originalwhatsforlunch.com. Or Captain McGullicutty's Fantabulous Luncherific Extravaganza .com

4. Not willing to invest too much money. But a share of $35 annually seems pretty reasonable.

5. Lunch means ending the hunger pangs in my stomache and blasting my tastebuds into orgasmic delight.

6. Blogging about lunch gives me something to do when goofing off.

Lunch today is a salad and a taco. Yesterday I had a burger, so it balances out.

1. What do you specifically dislike about blogger?
fucking thing doesn't post or loses your post.

2. What are some features or services you would like to see the new site have?
i don't mind it having the same functionality as what we have now. search function could be nice. also, would like to picture comment if possible. oh, and a "save" so that i can create a comment and come back later. but yeah...these are sort of a "nice to have" but i don't care if it's the same but just somewhere that it doesn't crap out all the time.

3. What domain name would you like our home on the internet to have?
keep it the same like originalwhatsforlunch.com or something like that.

4. What kind of time and/or money investment are you honestly willing and capable of contributing to the transition?
since i have no tech skills, i cannot contribute to building anything. i can probably give approx $10 to $20 a year or every six months...but i'm thinking, who's gonna collect the ciznash from all of us? paypal account?

5. What does lunch mean to you?
lunch is that one glorious escape from my prison of a desk. it's where i can be a little bit more creative. it's what i look forward to everyday as the "halfway" marker to closing time.
6. Why blog about lunch?
b/c we can. and i love to eat. and procrastinate.

1. What do you specifically dislike about blogger?
Like everyone else, I hate that some days it just gets gummed up.

2. What are some features or services you would like to see the new site have? The calendar on the main page, drop-down boxes - maybe things classified by topic so people could do a quick search.

3. What domain name would you like our home on the internet to have?
obviously, theoriginalwhatsforlunch.com (with or without 'the'), maybe we should think about www.owfl.com to re-direct to our site, too!

4. What kind of time and/or money investment are you honestly willing and capable of contributing to the transition?
I am willing to throw in a few bucks - a share of $35 seems good. Time, I'm willing to do (well, after 11/1), but I am techno-smarts-less, so I would probably do more harm than good . . . .

5. What does lunch mean to you?
Ah, lunch. That mid-day respite from the daily grind. The only thing that will shut up my grumbly stomach sometimes.

6. Why blog about lunch?
to quote dipso: why not? And what else would I do at work??

1. What do you specifically dislike about blogger?
It fargin sucks for reliability. It's flexibility isn't that great either. Its kinda like a girlfriend that isn't that great in bed.

2. What are some features or services you would like to see the new site have?
Funny you should mention. I'm working on that right now. It is "The Original Lunch Search". It is just a bit of code (that blogger will not let you upload .. damn that inflexibility) that will let you create a cookie (wonderful lunch speak) with your preferences and then you can search for lunch using Google's search features.

3. What domain name would you like our home on the internet to have?
I like Jo's suggetions. OR theOWFL.com OR oWhatsForLunch.com

4. What kind of time and/or money investment are you honestly willing and capable of contributing to the transition?
A more than practical amount. I think we should buy the name and I can put up a beta site for the time being until we find a provider we want to pay for.

Additionally, I think it would be great to have a clear and concise mission statement for the new blog. Currently, I think the subtitle functions as a mission statement of sorts, but that it should be more complete. If I am not mistaken, I believe a longer version of it exists somewhere. In order to write a mission statement that fully encompasses our collective goals and ambitions for The Original What's for Lunch, I would like to hear from everyone why lunch is so important to them that they regularly blog about it.

5. What does lunch mean to you?
Respite, a time to contemplate, a time to complain about your incompetent co-workers ... oh, you don't do that? I guess you are the incompetent co-worker.

6. Why blog about lunch?
Because it salves my savage, desert-eating-first-soul.

dizkonekdid said...

BTW .. I have a free server and bandwidth available for this crap. As much space and bandwidth as we want.

Movable Type 3.3 is the way I would go with blogging software. I can set this up with an FTP site.

Any takers?

LizTurtle said...

Free bandwidth and server?? I'm no techie, but that sounds pretty good to me. So the only thing we'd have to pay for would be the domain name?

dizkonekdid said...

That is right LT. I think this is where we should start. If we think my business cable is too slow. Then we can move off and onto another provider.

Josephus said...

Lots to think about and discuss...

dizkonekdid said...

oh, did I mention that I could give us all owfl email accounts?

Josephus said...

DAAAAAMMMMMNNNNN!

HaterTot said...

I'll get around to more of this in a bit - just got online at home. But, Diz - you are my new hero. I hear good things about Movable Type. And "free" is my favorite word, though I'd be happy to buy the domain, and deal with the yearly costs on my own. Y'all can buy me a drink. Paypal and cash are nuts, so I'm volunteering to just step up and handle it. You know, with all my spare cash.

oh my god. Dibs on muff@owfl.com!!! (Can we have multiple emails??)

We now own the domain names:

ORIGINALWFL.COM
ORIGINALWHATSFORLUNCH.COM
THEORIGINALWHATSFORLUNCH.COM

We are moving forward...next thing is to decide on the software.

although i'm sure you guys have the tallent available currently, i thought i would volunteer my body as well for god and country.. although a couple years out of date, i do have a bit of webdesign and graphics design in my history and have been known to program so if there is anything i can help with let me know..

Also, i believe we should have an official music area with songs written praising lunch.

I have never heard anything good about moveable type, in fact my guru Tom HATES it. Here's a recent rant about it and some of the problems he has had.
