TANSTAAFL = "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch."
it means that you cannot get something for nothing. this saying has been referenced everywhere from novels to physics theorems. and now it's time to discuss it on this blog. could OWFL develop a lunch theoreum that could challenge the likes of milton friedman??? deep thoughts...
but as a side note, do you really feel that this saying is true? please tell us all about the best free lunch (or dinner, or breakfast even) you've ever eaten and why.
and also, don't forget to tell us WFL today????

Happy Birthday Dipso/Ospid/Lester/Retsel/Serge!
Hey, thanks, Jo.
Lunch will be Perry's with Peep. I'm going to have to order the #27 (turkey salad with slaw and bacon). As a post related test, tafkalc, when they ask me for money, I'll just stand there and give peeP a dumb look.
FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS UNCLE SPARKLE!!!!!!! i hope that PeeP gets you the best tasting free lunch today and that you write all about it.
i didn't bring any lunch with me today. not sure what to get...any one have suggestions???
Goodbye lunch for a friend & co-worker today at Cafe Soleil. The imbibing goodbye "get together" is this evening.
I think the "free lunch" theory in my life relates directly to the "pay it forward" theory. As I have been the recipient of several metaphorical "free lunches" I believe that I have a duty to dish out "free lunches" to others. So using that philosophy there is NOT such a thing as a "free lunch" just a neverending cycle of "hand me downs".
Happy Birthday Birdy!
Hm, free lunch. Not sure. I'd rather my company didn't order Domino's anymore & just gave me the money, that's for sure. I had Faccia Luna pizza for dinner the night after our Domino's lunch and there is just no comparison. Domino's has really gone downhill! Yuck! Um, anyways. I think the only truly free lunch is the one when you steal someone else's from the office fridge.
Lunch today = the second half of my Boston Market meal yesterday. Dark meat + some mac & cheese (so gross - why do I order that crap??) + 1/2 a cornbread muffin.
I'm currently drinking a Coca Cola Blak, which may be the nastiest thing ever. It kind of tastes like Coke with Kahlua, but without the alcoholic kick. Ugh. Maybe it would be better with some cream.
We all know that lobbiests in DC shower the power-elite with lavish lunches and receptions, but that said things come with the expection for a little quid pro quo action.
However, if you work for a powerless and punch-happy member of congress, AND you crash said lavish receptions, it truly is free.
The best ever was a reception I crashed at the Republican National Committee. While democratic receptions dole out ritz crackers with squeeze cheese and a schlitz to chase it down with, the republican spread was awesome.
Crab meat served up in champaigne flutes with long spear forks to eat it with. killer sushi. And all sorts of incredible whore-derve style delictables. Top-shelf booze and micro-brews...and all knowing that we would never support whatever the cause of the event was...
free indeed
I was working for Tiffany & Co. in the Asia Pacific rim and Darin Chen (VP of the region) invited me to his favorite little cafe in Hong Kong in Kowloon. I had the best Dim Sum\dumplings, chicken feet, chicken curry (even tafkalc's wasn't as good as this stuff and that is saying something) that I've ever had in my life.
Regardless, today is shaved pepper corn turkey inside swiss cheese rolled up, sugar free red bull, and green grapes.
yeah watchdog! not only did you eat for free, you stuck it to "the man"...love it!
HT and i are contemplating lunch. probably a salad or something.
I agree with Jo on the whole 'pay it forward' theory. Karma. Give and take, give and take...really the whole theory is like sex...don't be THAT guy, or sooner or later you won't be givin' diddly squat!
Turkey sandwich for lunch with hummus from my fave pita place. I'll have to pick some hummus up one day for HH@BB...
Speaking of HH@BB, I'm assuming there'll be one tomorrow night before the concert?
Jo had mentioned moving HH to another locale that is closer to the concert venue....possibly off U Street???? Jo hates bob.
how can anyone hate bob?
why does day-old boston market chicken taste a little fishy? the fridge at work doesn't smell like fish.
LT - so does Boston Market disprove the theory that everything tastes like chicken...even if it is really supposed to...??
I usually get one large creamed spinach and one large mashed potato from BM...and then I mix the two together to form a mushy greenish mess...delicious!
God, I love their creamed spinach. And I've never been a creamed anything fan. Mmm . . . so good. Yesterday, though, I made the ill-advised decision to go with mac & cheese. Still regretting that one. Sigh, I'm so busy! Argh argh argh!
Pretty good place, that Perry’s. I really liked the turkey salad sandwich (Earnest's Extacy - Turkey salad, jack cheese, cole slaw, bacon and Russian dressing). I don’t think I’ve ever had turkey salad before. The Russian dressing was interesting - dark, thick and chunky. They really slathered it on both slices of bread, which I thought would be overwhelming, but with the amount of slaw, bacon and turkey salad they piled on, it worked.
The Ormand Street Special was also quite good, but daunting. Triple decker. I’m not to keen on sandwiches that are such a chore to eat. I should have paid more attention when peep ate his half. The meat was very good. Peep’s got a photo of it. I only took a bite or so and wrapped the rest to go. Peep didn’t even get into his half of the turkey salad. Definitely two meals out of one sandwich, which make the price (7.50 & 8.00) more than right.
Peep treated. What a guy! I'm telling ya, ladies...this kid's a catch! Word on the street's that he's hung like a donkey, too.
I need a nap.
Concert is Antibalas Afro-beat Orchestra.
A big fave of Jo's. I went to one and they're a solid group.
Lunch today was a salad from the salad bar at work. My salads tend to be a large medley of every item that I happen to like that is out there. So we're talking spinach, mushrooms, sprouts (both alfalfa and the other kind), artichoke, turkey chunks, tomatoes, onions, black beans, peas, sunflower seeds and some blue cheese on top. Each bite is an adventure
Holy cow! That's a big sammich!
Now I'm hungry again. I wish there were a good place for pickles around here.
Some of us are going to see this band in Concert.
I was disappointed in Cafe Soleil. I had the crab bisque and the veal. Not great.
"I wish there was a good place for pickles around here." LT blasphemes.
I at the freaking Courthouse metro! There is no place for pickles near me!!
I'm glad you said it so I didn't have to, peep!
