Upgrades: OWFL 1.1

Perhaps you didn't notice, but if you look to the right on the mainpage you will see a new heading on the sidebar for "Always Pertinent Posts". From now on we can keep topics that are, uh, always pertinent, in a place where they can be easily accessed.

Under the "Favorite Recipes of OWFL" post we need you start putting your favorite recipes. We've all shared at least one before. Go back and find the one you have shared in the past or put some new ones up over yonder.

The second post under the new heading is "The Official Conference Post" that refers to the conference we are determined to someday have even if it kills us. Use that post to discuss your thoughts, ideas, issues or whatever comes to mind in regard to the conference that could be the catalyst for revolutionary change in lunches everywhere, (when we are through we'll be referring to it like the global warming conference at Kyoto, "After Washington, everything changed...").

We all need to give praise to our sister in lunch and OWFL Chief Technology Officer, The Jade, for making the blog upgrades last night. She has had a very busy week and stayed up past her bedtime to get it done for us. She will be rewarded with green beer this weekend at the First Annual OWFL mini-conference. Jade you are appreciated.

Today I'd like you to share some of your ideas for how we could "upgrade" the blog. Do we need to have more features? A weekly poll? Do we need to go on a "membership drive" of sorts and attract new people? Or do we need to stand pat and let things happen on their own? Where do you see this blog in the future?

So share with us your hopes and dreams for OWFL
No idea is too big or small (I still envision The Food Network calling someday...).

And of course WFL?

Fancy new Digs!

Jo, some interesting points in the front post today:

1. Membership drive - I thought it was nice that ya'll (hehe) were so inviting when I first came aboard. I don't think we really need it but I do encourage (like L-Roy did) you to talk to friends (esp) in othyer cities like me to get their take on things and post interesting places to eat in their city. I think everyone on the blog is funny and has a different (and mostly) better viewpoint than I.

Upgrades - I will try to become more descriptive and "spatially aware" in my posts (i.e. I'm gonna take pictures at lunch and rate places and tell about their best dishes). I am purchasing a camera phone soon and will grab some flickr software with which to make posting easier.

Rico...uh thanks for your ideas...

diz thanks for your insights. I think more voices would be great (especially today) as long as they brought something positive to the mix. I just got my first camera phone so I plan on sharing lunch pics soon as well.

I just had a dissapointing hot Italian sub from some buffet/deli place. It filled me up. That's about it.

So I woke up a few minutes later than I should've...basically got to work on time, but my typically satisfying brown bag lunch seriously took the brunt of my tardiness. I have some soup from Trader Joes...roasted red pepper and tomato. I am not a fan of packaged soups...but this kind from TJ's is really pretty good. Not quite the tomato basil soup from Le Madeline's...which is divine...but it'll do for a quick fix on a busy day. I need something other than the oxy-moronic 'organic frozen burrito' that I brought to accompany the soup though...I may have to follow Rico's lunch idea and grab a grilled chix sandwich...with bacon...cause bacon makes it all better!

Oops..sorry...I didn't include a HUGE shout out to the new and improved OWFL! I can't wait to get some recipes posted and to sample the ones from my fellow WFLers! I don't know why there can't be two conferences...maybe even three or four...do we really want to limit ourselves to ONE conference per year??!! Your palate and cooking ingredients should really change and adapt per season anyways to accomodate for which foods are in season...so why not have conferences to celebrate each seasons bounty??!

Great conference ideas uni, in fact I think those should be brought up on the conference post for discussion. Why not seasonal conferences?

I went to a wedding in France last summer & they had rose box wine. No shit. I was speechless. Which was fine, b/c nobody spoke english.

Hey OWFLers!!! I am back after a several day hiatus for a) illness & b) work trip out of the country. I ate so well . . . I have a friends down thar who is a big foodie & gave me lots o' tips of where to go. 2 new places, 2 oldies, but goodies & a couple of others. 2 lunches were hot dogs at the turn on the golf course. Does any dog taste better? Well, day 2 was better b/c I got a beer. I was just really thirsty the first day & didn't think to get one. Went to my favorite little pub for quiz night & a spicy shrimp masala which was just as good as I remember. Had a spiny lobster & pate one night. Had an alcohol soaked Saturday where I had so many drinks with the first round of friends (who had a gala to go to) that I didn't eat half my meal with friend round #2. And finished it all up with a huge & fantastic & extra-garlicky middle eastern meal at the new & fabulous Cafe Cairo. If anyone goes to Bermuda, I highly recommend it. Of course, this recommendation expires in 3 years, as that seems to be the amount of time it takes a place to get tired & grow bad. Odd, that.

Glad to be back! Excited to see the upgrades! Have not explored them yet (have been reading up on the past 4 days worth), but am looking forward to it!

Oh, since my sushi dinner was cancelled tonight, it became my sushi lunch. Sashimi & spicy tuna crunchy roll. With complementary miso soup & salad with that yummy ginger dressing.

I think a TJ is opening in Adams Morgan...

I skipped lunch today in favor of getting my hair done. It is pretty dark, and it took forever so I just ate a little bag of chips at my desk.

There is a guy in Chicago who has been lurker on here for awhile and visits JIC regularly. We have corresponded by email a bit and I told him he needs to start commenting, but I have yet to see him. Please encourage him to start, he's pretty funny and would be a good addition. I also want to get my best friend and watchdog's co-worker to start posting. I think she would be an wesome addition.

I am SO looking forward to this weekend!

Start talking!!

Jo, that's not your normal charming self and that's no way to welcome and encourage someone. I expect better from you.

Sorry.

Please begin to participate with haste.

I just made the spinach salad I suggested to Jo a couple weekends ago. Damn, it was good. But, I realized I am not very good at hard boiling eggs, so I thought I'd ask HT how to do it. I realize I could ask her directly but maybe the rest of OWFL would like to know as well.

HaterTot said...

Is hard boiling eggs a recipe? Should this go there? I hardly know the rules around here anymore...

I do the lazy person's modified Julia way (her's is insane and takes like an hour and pots of water of varying degrees - it's boiling eggs, not nuclear fission) AND according to her, this method is actually called coddling:

I cover no more than 6 eggs at a time(I use white ones to hard boil; the brown ones I use for everything else don't seem to work as well, for reasons unclear to me)with cold water that covers the eggs by one inch. Then, I bring the water to a boil and once it's boiling, I immediately remove the pan from the heat. I then cover, and let it sit for 17 minutes. (the rest of Julia's recipe involves switching to cold water, then back to boiling to make peeling easier) Also, if you're going to keep a supply on hand, as I do, you should keep them refrigerated and uncovered.

I had sugar free red bull and gum for lunch today. And I am jealous of TheJade's hair. You're all just going to have to deal with my ratty ass hair this weekend because I used hair money to buy the plane ticket.

Jada said...

OK, that is totally easy. I think I don't bring them to a full enough boil. I will try your/Julia's way next time.

My hair is too dark. I don't like it so much outside of the salon. I am going to live with it for six weeks and then get some highlights to brighten it up at my next trim. Who cares about your hair HT, you have new boobies to show off. That's way more exciting than hair.

I just realized that I got my hair done the day before you came to Chicago last time, too.

By the way, awesome job on the upgrades! Maybe I'll contribute to one or both new sections one of these days...
