little wallet, BIG appetite

so, i think it's time to start posting again about lunch. therefore, let me present a dillema for all of you...

what do you do when you are trying to save money and bring a sack lunch to work only to find that the lunch that you brought just isn't enough? what can you buy that will fill you up but won't cost you a fortune?

i've come across this many a time while at the office, my tummy grumbling after consuming a decent sized turkey and swiss sandwich on wheat bread. i am hungry one hour later and have to get a second lunch. oh, and throw in that i want to eat something that is healthy and you limit yourself to soup, some baby carrots, and maybe a bag of pretzels.

is this all there really is?

so kids, WFL and how does one solve this problem????

P.S. i cannot believe i got to work this early in the morning (arrived at 745am). i guess setting my clock WAAAAAYYYYY ahead of time really does work!

Well Giggles,

You have plenty of choices there. I took your question to mean you are looking for just plain snacking. I want to clarify by stating that sating an appetite is all you should do. So I advise against "filling up".

Solutions:

1. extra cold cuts (when you roll them with cheese it is the best ... should be in the same bag with the sandwich)
2. tupperware of cottage cheese with some strawberry preserves (don't buy the expensive individual cups)
3. Big freakin Texas grapefruit
4. Gum - depending on who you are this can make your hunger disappear or make it worse.

This are just a few things to keep you from sneaking into the nearest coffee shop and paying ungodly amounts for sugary goodness.

Well folks its spring break for me. I took the whole of this week off. I wish I could say it has been relaxing and fun, but I've gotten taxes, overdue expense accounts, leaky plumbing, rocking toilets, the odd issue at work, various friendship obligations, and condo insurance taken care of, fixed, or otherwise put to rights.

I haven't even had time to just sit and read a book with margarita in hand. (ahhh margarita ... my mistress and lover).

As a side note, I'd like to hear about why ya'll were talking about promotions and demotions for a blog on a fun pub crawl ... or was it one of those nights where you went through EVERY possible topic twice?

Cheers!

Good morning lachoi! Good to see you again. Even though I suspect unicorn may have words for you at some point today... Good to see you too diz. Re: blog discussions at the bar: The OWFL is all powerful...

In response to your query lachoi, I am lucky enough to have a lunch counter joint in my building, so if my lunch (brown bag or otherwis) isn't filling I run downstairs for some potato salad or a BLT. If I'm on a budget and strictly doing brown bag then I might throw a can of veggies or soup in with the main lunch as a safety.

I am going for a good old fashioned deli sandwich today. Probably from Cap Grounds. Details later.

When I bring my lunch, I usually end up bringing way more than I end up eating. I also keep a supply of snacks at the office, nutrigrain bars, yogurt, raisins and apples and peanut butter. There is also usually popcorn and candy and stuff. Sometimes I don't even need to bring my lunch or go out, but can kind of graze on the stuff already in the kitchen.

I am curious as to why I was forced to stay up past my bedtime recently to put up a conference post, when all the conference discussion seems to be happening via email. Huh, lunch czar?

I am a brown bagging queen. Leftovers, sandwiches, homemade soups...whatever. It's almost sad how many tupperware containers I haul into work everyday.

One habit that I've gotten into, especially during the winter is making a huge batch of soup over the weekend. Homemade soup is so much better than canned...and is much more healthful, and can be done rather inexpensively. My trick is to make a good veggie based soup...one that can stand on its own, but one that I can jazz up during the week so I don't get sick of it...throw in some leftover rice, pasta, diced up chicken or beef or quinoa.

I also like to make a batch of some kind of snack mix to keep on hand...a variety of nuts, almonds, peanuts, soy nuts, bits of dark chocolate (or m&m's suffice), dried cranberries and shredded coconut. I also stock up weekly on various fruit and yogurt to keep on hand.

Today's lunch, honey roasted chicken breast sandwich on wheat with a leftover green bean salad, made with fresh beans, sauteed baby bellas, onions and red pepper. Topped off with a dressing that I whipped up with balasamic vinegar, dijon mustard, a little soy sauce and sesame seeds.

Indeed alot of conference talk has been via e-mail. That has happened for a variety of reasons. Regardless I would direct all wflers to the designated comference post for any suggestions/questions/comments etc. that you might have. It can be found on the sidebar of the OWFL homepage.

I would also direct wflers who are have my space or friendster pages to link up with the OWFL pages on those sites. They are also available on the sidebar.

And don't forget to add your favorite recipes to the recipe post!

For snacks, lately I've been going over to Attila's & getting a tub of hummus or baba ganoush or both & a pita. They warm it up for you. Mmmmmm. Otherwise I usually have nuts or rice crackers at my desk. Currently, I'm very low on things. Might have to duck out & buy some cashews. Or some pita & hummus! Mmmm.

FYI - for the DC crowd - I made muffuletta (I really need to figure out the correct spelling of that) for HH at BB. I stayed up until midnight for it. So you better come. And you better like it. Randy - your buddy there will need to provide us with a big knife.

Oh yeah - for lunch I made the weirdest looking sandwich. For the muffuletta you have to cut out some of the bread from the loaf, else it be a huge carb overindulgence & there are questions as to whether mere mortals could get their mouth around it (not a problem for me). So I cut them out carefully & then I made a sandwich them. Shoot, I should have taken a picture. Oh well. It has leftover capicola (from round 1 of the muffuletta), goat cheese, LTO, mayo & my dad's famous top-secret salad dressing. Mm mm good!

I admit it. I have a drawer full of ramen right next to me.

Plucked from the newswire, they evacuated a basketball arena because "[a] bomb-sniffing dog noticed something in a hot dog cart."

I love dogs. Dogs should be in charge. I'm not even close to kidding.

Did anyone ever see 'Top Secret!' with Val Kilmer? I hope it winds up being like that scene where the guard dogs are barking wildly at this guy with a package & the East German guards come & drag him away & shoot him & then the dogs paw open the package & it's filled with Milkbones. Hee! Seriously, I hope it was the hot dogs they were digging, and not anything explosive.

Love Top secret!

Val Kilmer is the greatest actor of his generation.

'Real Genius'...the popcorn scene was brilliant

There was an anonymity violation. Shame.

LT is the guilty party!!!
That muffeletta better be good!

I have BC winning the whole thing. Can I just say "ph-fuckin'-ew!"

Val Kilmer isn't fit to hold Brendan Frasor's jock strap!!!

Josephus said...

Encino Man can't hold Val's jockey shorts!

You all need to ask Jo about his special feelings for Skeet Ulrich.

I'm leaving for HH now. Lunch was only about a half hour ago though. 2 Sugar Free Red Bull, a salad and some tomato soup.

I'm going to be too full for muffaletta...

BTW, DC peeps - tomorrow night at Best Cellars is a Hungarian Wine Tasting. Come one, come all and listen to me teach the staff how to pronounce all the words!

Welcome, Miu!! We love new people, especially since we old ones can't always post anymore!!

Ospid, you have BC winning the whole thing? Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Well, what can you expect from a Michigan fan. You think next year you guys might make an appearance at the big dance?
