I went skiing this past Sunday. As anyone who read yesterday's blog knows, I was in massive pain and also denied the opportunity for a delicious waffle. It also took me an extra 20 hours to get up to Vermont, seeing as how United's plane decided to take an unscheduled break (broken heating element - or so we were told). Eventually (at about 10:45pm) they just cancelled the flight & sent everyone to stand in a loooooong line to get re-booked the following day, after which everyone had to go stand in another line to get booked into a hotel & pick up food vouchers. I didn't really feel like coming to the airport to eat before my flight, so I had a grilled cheese at my parents' house. So the question is: what airports have the best food selection? The worst selection? What's your favorite airport meal before or during a trip? Is there any such thing? Personally, the only time I will willingly patronize a TGI Friday's, Ruby Tuesday's or the like (now with flair!) is at an airport. And I usually get the worst thing for you on the menu (cheese sticks or potato skins? why not both?), justifying it with "Well, I'm in an airport. It's not like I have many other options." Yes, I am a greasehound.
And, as always, WFL?

Thanks for getting a post up LizT, even though it sounds eerily familiar...
There is a little known law of physics, "The Theory of Travel Food Relativity", which states, "In a place of mass transit it is impossible for decent food to co-exist in that location."
Airports, bus stations, subways ... all the same.
Obstacles may arise in the course of your daily chores when machines break down and interfere with your efficiency. Your frustrations may cause you to want to yell and start throwing things. If you must blow your top, [redacted], do it in such a way as to avoid causing upsets to others. Go for a workout or jog, or take a karate class. The machines will be fixed and the situation will pass. Hang in there!
That is my horoscope for today, folks. Watch out.
Lunch is an event on the Hill - I'm predicting salmon and rice and chewy veggies.
I have had some great food at the Rio de Janeiro airport. There was one place that had this salad bar place where they gave you a card and you checked off all the items you wanted from this endless list of amazing selections, and then they tossed it all up for you. Everywhere you go in Brazil in fact has superior food choices. Even the tourist spots like Corcovado [the big Jesus] had great selections. It's not like in the US how they will have a snack shop with hot dogs in foil wrappers and maybe some dried out pretzels. I had one of the best sandwiches ever at Corcovado, some kind of salami and white cheese, and a mango and pineapple salad on the side. It was amazing.
As far as Chicago, I think Midway has the better food, but I don't usually eat in the airport. I eat before I leave and then pack some fruit and maybe a granola bar and some water for snacks.
I made chicken and white bean chili for dinner last night and will be having some for lunch and some strawberries and grapes for dessert. Lunch is a ways off though as I haven't even eaten breakfast yet. Strangely, I kinda just want to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
surprisingly Cincinatti has a pretty solid deli. Got an awesome sandwich there. Not that you'd ever want to go to Cincinatti, but if you're passing through hit it up. Don't remember the name but had a brick and wood theme to it, kinda like a firehook but better.
I usually go with burgers and fries while in airports. lizturtle hit it that it provides a good excuse to eat that greazzy stuff.
Peep, you ate an airport? Gees, I thought I had a big appetite.
I don't get the obsession some people have with chick fil A. I have a friend who LOVES it, like would eat there every day, multiple times a day if he lived near one. I don't think it's bad, but I don't see the obsession. Maybe it's one of those things that if you grew up with it, you love it. Like, dare I say it, Vernors? [Which I fucking LOVE, by the way.]
Jo needs to stop emailing and tell us WFL.
Jesus.
Not a fan of Chick Fil A. I can't see that changing.
Atlanta has an impressive food court, as does Midway.
Washington National has a Legal Seafood...
I'm thinking about a Chicken Salad sandwich from Cap Grounds...
Well, you can play slots and smoke while you wait for your flight in Las Vegas...that always passes the time for me.
I did have a breakfast stromboli at Dulles thanksgiving morning. That was pretty good...eggs, cheese and sausage rolled up in dough. Yum. In Buffalo, I had a beef on weck...and I do believe it was honest to god weck.
I like the sweet tea at Chik fil A..although it seems whenever I do actually want chik fil A it's on a sunday...when they are all closed...f'ing jesus freaks....
Tiny bit of business, the pre-confernce posting schedule is in the comments of the conference post, which can be found on the sidebar of the homepage.
Blecccch!
Welcome inbred.
I can't do steak tartar. There is something about ground meat that requires cooking in my opinion. I love carpacio, but take that same meat and grind it and I won't eat it. No way, no day. And yes, I have tried it. I still don't like it
Love tartare.
Got a chicken salad sanwich for Daily Market. Th chicken is shredded in the salad rather than chopped. Gives it a weird consistency. I don't think I like it.
Word, Jade. I'll eat steak tartar, but it just looks too much like hamburger.
Miu - I totally know that gelato stand by the old Independence Air gates! It occurs to me - maybe I never get a good meal, b/c I'm not willing/too pressed for time to stand in the longer lines that inevitably result at the decent places . . . . Hm!
Lunch today was not the sandwich I packed for myself (goat cheese/pate/LTO/mayo/Dad's salad dressing - would have been goat cheese & turkey, but the turkey was slimey - yuck!), but the thing that I promised someone in my office I would go to today. The new 5 Guys! So exciting! Fresh-cut fries straight from the fryer - potato-y tasting, which I usually am not a fan on in fries, but these were perfection, plus a jr. hamburger with LTO, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and sauteed onions (not the sauteed shrooms I requested). Mmmmm. Fresh burger. Hey! Which brings me full circle on this post! Steak tartar is scary. 5 Guys is good.
5 Guys needs a prominent place on the conf. agenda.
I love Five Guys...it is greasy, gluttonous and great...it's up there right next to In-N-Out Burger.
I know nothing of this 5 guys place of which you speak. Details please. What makes it so special?
It's a local chain, althought they've been expanding (Richmond, Roanoke, Outer Banks, at least) and are sort of similar (correct me if I'm wrong - I've only been to In 'n Out once & it was fantastic) to In 'n Out Burger in that it has a pretty limited menu - (burger, cheesburger, baconburger, bacon cheeseburger & the jr. option of all 4, hot dog, chees or bacon dog, bacon cheese dog, veggie or grilled cheese) a ton of toppings, large or small fries, 1 size soda. They make all their patties fresh - never frozen, etc. Really good stuff.
Shit. We forgot 5 guys. Giggles and I will amend to include. We actually devised a brilliant plan to be sure that basically any and every DC spot is represented. Yinz will be impressed.
Lunch was chicken with capers and olives and some kind of balsamic something or other. Hotel lunch food.
Five Guys is the DC area's hamburger heaven. I go to the Georgia Ave/Howard Univ. location and usually get a bacon cheeseburger with jalepenos, bbq sauce, picles, lto, heavy mayo and pickles. And the get a "little" cheeseburger (one patty instead of the normal two)with grilled onions, sauteed shrooms, lto ketchup and mayo. Order of Cajun fries and a root beer. I eat the two burgers, have about 5 fries, 1/2 of the soda, and then I pass out for two hours.
Wow, we need to go to this place yinz guys rave about. Sounds like a great hangover cure lunch.
I apologize for the grammar in my last comment. I really need a drink.
Oh see, I thought you already were drinking, Jo.
I think girl scout cookies and coffee might be the best afternoon treat in the world.
I like new dill pickles. I also love homemade bread and butter pickles. And sweet gherkins. I expect Jo will put a variety of pickles on his relish tray.
e-que, while I admit that Pappadeux was trying to cleanup by opening up in the airport, they forgot that law of physics. So anyone that has been to a REAL Papaadeux never goes to that one. It sux.
Sorry, these are only opinions. Even in Asia the food sucked in the airport. In the air (Korair and Sing Air are the best), the food was great.
Weirdly.
Jade, lunch? Hangover lunch? I thought you were champy enough to get up early with a hang over. What are we?? Light weights?
Are you kidding Diz? I am an uber-lightweight. No joke. I am nowhere near the level of Jo or HT when it comes to drinking and I get atrocious hangovers. Although I do think I could out smoke the entire OWFL.
I want to making breaking the World record for "Largest Relish Tray" a project for the conference.
How many packs can you smoke in a row jade?
Or were you talking about something else?
I was indeed talking about something else, but I could do it in cigarettes, as well. AND I smoke Marlboro Reds, not any of those little girly cigarettes with "Light" at the end.
So Jade, have you ever had a Malibu?
