I'm back and it feels good. The words are flowing from my brain to my fingertips and I'm ready to talk turkey - turkey clubs, turkey cobbs, hell, maybe even a turkey leg or two - it is afterall, turkey season, so let's get after it.
I'm blogging from that beautiful island called Manhattan, and it's a gorgeous fall day. It's unseasonably warm, and I can't wait to get out and be part of it. Which, brings me to an important point. We here at TheOriginalWhat'sForLunch encourage you to come be part of it. We aspire to grow this little community to one that crosses all demographics. All that we ask is that you share our passion for lunch and our verbosity in professing our love.
We're not a group that has all the lunch answers - and I hope we never do. But we are a group who thrives on friendly debate, witty banter, and pastrami on rye. We want more voices on the subject - we want YOUR voice. Make it be heard!
With that, I'll move on to the matter of the day - What's For Lunch?
Me, I'm meeting a friend "in a little courtyard on 51st, between 6th and 7th near the rabbit statue that is now covered in Christmas trees" and seeking lunch from there. Sure sounds Alice In Wonderland-ian to me. What would Alice eat?

These are the salad days! And I'm having a Big Salad from my favorite gourmet buffet joint Soho. If I was on the isle of Manhattan I would probably find the nearest Mike's Papaya/Papaya King and get two franks, one with onions mustard and mustard and the other with relish and mustard and a big grape drink.
I meant onions, mustard and ketchup. Jeez. As for Alice, I think it's obvious that whatever she'd eat would have some psychotropic element to it. Maybe a Shroom salad?
Alice would definately eat some mushrooms of some kind, and oversized muffins and biscuits, like the size of foot stool.
As for me, i've got a flight this afternoon. So i'm thinking either sandwich in the cafeteria, there's quizno's (what's good there?), and Ethics, I'm looking at you...I can try Eat First Restaurant, but what would you recommend?
Eat First is an amazing place. I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out. The General Tso's tofu is AWESOME. I usually get that, or a selection of dumplings from the appetizer menu. However, I'm always tempted by the offerings on the mirror. Every time I've been there, both my dining partners and I have been pleased with whatever we've gotten, so I think you should go with what looks good off of the extensive menu. But the GTTofu is magic.
I've been surprised one before when i found out that tofu can be eaten without vomiting. Sala Thai has this really good peanut dippin' sauce that comes with fried tofu, the tofu is basically a delivery mechanism for the awesome sauce, but its allright.
Welcome m, and your obscure ERC and old school tv ads. As a native New Yorker, maybe you can give us your take on the NYC burger debate. CSR says the burgers at the shake shack put corner bistro to shame and are NYC's best. Do you agree?
Welcome M! I don't know that Katz's is on the agenda today, since I'm headed up to this mysterious courtyard on 51st. However, this brisket sounds like it must be tasted, and I wonder why it's not been done before.
And you are welcome for the invite - though having you guys there probably did more for me; just knowing that I had moral support and could do something kinda neat for my peeps was reward unto itself. I only wish that more my fellow What's For Lunchers could've joined the fete.
I am signing off for a few hours to allow my hostess to obsessively dust and get some work done while I head to parts unknown for a tasty lunchtime treat and a libation or two. I'll report back with what I'm sure will be tales of much interest to this blog.
Welcome again, M - we're damn glad to have ye!
I made a right turn and didn't get salad. Instead I went to the Daily Market (no, not the grill) and got a recess club (ham, turkey swiss, bacon, lto, avocado, honey mustard and mayo) on a lightly toasted soft sub roll.
Delicious.
Cafeteria was a big score today. I got stir fry, made to order, with chicken and shrimp, red bell and green peppers, onions, sprouts, baby corn, mushrooms. Top notch
I have been asked to report that Dipso is taking a leave of absence from the blog in order to exorcise some demons. He's been feeling the hate recently and needs to get positive before returning to us.
We wish him well and remind him that a good lunch is an excellent anti-depressant.
Wow. I'm shocked and saddened by dipso's announcement, but I wish him well and look forward to his return. I also hope that his hate is in no way directed at his brethern here at the Original What's For Lunch, and rather directed toward society as a whole.
I met my friend at the rabbit - and took pictures for your viewing enjoyment. However, I can't figure out how to post them, so you'll have to take my word for it. I also took a photo of the bar where we tried to eat, but when we got there, we discovered that it had burnt down, so that was kind of a lunch downer.
We ended up at a run of the mill deli, where I had a roast beef and provolone with cress and tomatoes with ample mayo and horseradish. It was served on a greasy, cheesy focaccia, which was sort of weird, but good.
We enjoyed our meal and catching up in the sun at Rockefeller Center, where a nice man came along after we were done eating to take our trash because there are no trash cans there. Any insight into why that is??
Strolled back to her office/the rabbit and stopped in at Maison d' Chocolat where I was going to buy my beautiful hostess a gift, but was flabbergasted and appalled at the prices of the fancy french cocoa treats. I don't know what a $16 chocolate bar is made of, and at that price, I will likely never find out.
Okay, I get why no trashcans for that reason, in places that are near things we'd want to save. There aren't any around the Capitol or the White House either. But Rockefeller Center? I don't know, I guess the people waiting in line for the Radio City Xmas extravaganza or trying to catch a glimpse of Matt, Katie and Al deserve a chance too, it just wouldn't be the first place I'd think to safeguard. But I'm admittedly a snotty bitch like that.
